As a young child, I was very pleasing to my parents. If they told me to do something, I would do it. But I always needed to consider things that I could easily see. That made my parents unhappy. By age ten, that still annoyed (使惱怒) them!
Every Wednesday afternoon, my mother drove me to downtown for a piano course. During the half-hour lesson, she'd rush to the nearby mall and buy a week's food. After my lesson, my mother drove me twelve miles there, twelve miles back. I thought if I should help my mother bring the food into the house when asked, but I didn't. Because I thought housework is boring and I'm the center of my world, I just brought a small bag into the house and left the rest to my mother. And then I ran to my room, shut the door and started studying.
Gradually (漸漸地), my "not helping" became a bigger and bigger problem for me because what I learned at school made me realize that I was avoiding responsibility (避免責任) that I should take. I would like to change.
So, one Wednesday afternoon after getting off the car, I didn't go away. I decided to help my mother do something. My mother thanked me that day. What I remember most was the sense of peace and satisfaction after helping her. Unknown to my mom, I'd already decided to offer her help every Wednesday. From that day on, I really did.

Overcoming (克服) people pleasing needs to be done by changing a few habits. Here are three things a people pleaser should practice.
Remember your worth (價值).
Overcoming people pleasing starts with knowing the value of your own opinions and actions. By pleasing people at the expense of your own needs, you're forgetting that you are here for a reason.
Apologize (道歉) properly.
Apologizing is a good action for people pleasers when things go wrong. If you're a people pleaser, too, the minute something goes wrong, you probably jump to apologize. If you are at fault (過錯), say you're sorry. However, if you aren't, save the apology for when you're at fault.
Speak up.
People pleasers like to agree with the crowd. We are quiet, listening and waiting to go with whatever decision is reached. Many times, I simply stayed quiet and agreed, even when I really didn't like whatever the plans were.Overcoming people pleasing needs to use your voice even if it means shouting to be heard.
As you work on overcoming people pleasing, you'll probably fall into old patterns. I do try. The best part is that we get a new day to try again.
