Traveling without a map in different countries,I find out about different“styles”of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have name signs:in Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers,“Go straight down to the corner.Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

People in Los Angeles, the US,have no idea of distance on the map:they measure distance by time, not miles.“How far away is the post office?”you ask.“Oh,” they answer,“it’s about five minutes from here.” You don’t understand completely,“Yes,but how many miles away is it,please?”To this question you won’t get an answer, because most probably they don’t know it themselves.

People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions because tourists seldom understand the Greek language.Instead,a Greek will often say,“ Follow me.”Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.

Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in the situation? A New Yorker might say,“Sorry, I have no idea.”But in Yucatan,Mexico,no one answers “I don’t know.” People there believe that “I don’t” is impolite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one.So a tourist can get lost very easily in Yucatan!

However, one thing will help you everywhere in the world. It’s body language.

1.Which of the following is probably an example of Japanese directions?

A.“Go south two miles.Turn west and then go another mile.”

B.“Turn right at the hospital and go past a school.”

C.“The post office is about five minutes from here.”

D.“The post office is at Street Kamira.”

2.Why don’t people in Los Angeles give directions in miles?

A.They use landmarks in their directions instead of distance.

B.They prefer to lead you the way.

C.They often have no idea of distance measured by miles.

D.They prefer to use body language.

3.How do Greeks give directions?

A.Using street names.

B.Using landmarks.

C.Leading people the way.

D.Giving people a wrong direction.

4.Where is Yucatan?

A.In the USA. B.In Japan.

C.In Greece. D.In Mexico.

Picking up objects plays an important role in people’s life. El-E is a robot that is designed to get everyday objects for people with disabilities.

About 1.5 meters tall, with a single robotic arm that can pick up objects at different heights, El-E is equipped to discover what its owner wants and then go and fetch it. The user can point a location to the robot using a “point-and-click” way of interaction, which provides a direct way to tell the robot which object to handle or where to go. The robot can adapt the position of its arm in order to grasp the object.

After successful early trials, some scientists expanded El-E’s functions and tried to combine voice commands with the laser (激光) in order to do more complicated tasks, like opening doors. The robot recognizes words such as “pull” or “push” and performs the action on an object illuminated by the laser. In order to add more functions, project director Prof. Charlie and his colleagues are focusing on programming El-E to locate and fetch common household items such as a hairbrush, a bottle of pills or a cell phone.

The robot is also designed to learn from its mistakes. “If it fails to fetch an object, it will recognize it and try again,” Charlie said. Formal studies have shown El-E to be a good worker. In 127 out of 134 trials, the robot successfully picked up the requested object.

1.What is the purpose of the text?

A. To describe different types of El-E.

B. To predict the development of El-E.

C. To introduce the functions of El-E.

D. To stress the importance of El-E.

2.The underlined part “point-and-click” in Paragraph 2 refers to .

A. a method through which people give commands

B. a machine that can be used to replace the robot

C. a signal used to show the robot where the object is

D. a button that controls the actions of the robot

3.How do Charlie and his colleagues develop El-E?

A. By having it communicate with more people.

B. By making it able to fetch more items.

C. By letting it pick up objects more accurately.

D. By getting it changeable at different occasions.

4.From the text, we can learn that_______.

A. robots are getting more and more popular

B. robots are quicker than human beings

C. more and more people begin to develop robots for the disabled

D. correcting mistakes can help the robot work more successfully

Allow me to introduce you to Terry, a window salesman from England. If I could take you back about 20 years, you’d know Terry as a complete green hand, who was wet behind the ears in just about everything he attempted. A person couldnt sell false teeth to his own Granny, let alone he could compete with the other salespeople in the industry. You know, the kind who could sell snow to Eskimos.

Terry’s boss decided to send him out on a practical field trip on his first day. So off he went, but he was extremely nervous. With his hands and his knees shaking, he approached the front door and knocked at is. And old woman appeared. After dozens of cups of tea and pieces of biscuits, the woman signed a contract and purchased over $7,000 worth of windows.

The woman had already talked with 6 excellent salesmen that week, all of whom offered her cheaper ones! That’s right---Terry’s price was the most expensive and he was also the most inexperienced salesman there ever was.

So, what happened then? Here comes the secret. The woman said she liked the young lad more than the others. That’s all there was to it. She didn’t care about the extra expense. Even the other salesmen couldn’t persuade her to pay less than this young lad was asking for.

The truth is that the young lad left on the woman the first impression that shone brighter than any of the salesman’s talk. First impressions count, not the sales techniques, not the low prices. The actual “personality” the kid honestly gave was all that was required. If you market your own products and services, consider what impression you are giving to others. If you appeal to them, then you’ve already done half of the work. If this means redesigning your presentation, then so be it. If this means going out of your way to be polite, helpful and giving the best possible shopping experience to your customers, the so be it.

1.When Terry was offered the job of salesman, he .

A. was good at sales techniques

B. was too young to do it

C. was believed in by his boss

D. knew little about sales skills

2.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 suggests that .

A. Terry couldn’t trade with Eskimos

B. Terry loved his Granny more

C. Terry was too honest to do the job

D. Terry was afraid to compete

3.What made the young lad succeed in selling the window to the old woman?

A. Being honest and childish.

B. First impression of good personality.

C. High quality and expensive window.

D. Strange ways of sales.

4.The passage is most likely written to .

A. new salesmen

B. general readers

C. window makers

D. new graduates

Most people think that the capital of the movie world is Hollywood, in the United States. However, the real movie capital is Mumbai, in India. Mumbai used to be known as Bombay, and so the film industry(產業)there is called “Bollywood”. Each year, Bollywood makes twice as many movies as Hollywood.

The movies from Bollywood are very different from Hollywood movies. For one thing, Bollywood movies are longer than most Hollywood movies. Most Bollywood movies are more than three hours long, and contain singing, dancing, adventure, mystery and romance. Because Bollywood films has so many different characters, this style of film is called a “masala” film. Masala is an Indian word for a mixture(混合) of spices(調味品).

Another big difference is the way the movies are made. It takes longer to make a movie in Hollywood than in Bollywood. In fact, filming may begin on a Bollywood movie before the script(劇本) is finished. The director and writers can make up the story while the filming is being made. Sometimes they even write the script by hand instead of typing it.

Bollywood actors are so popular that some of them may even work on several movies at the same time. They may even make several different films on the same day using the same costumes(戲裝) and scenery. Since most Bollywood movies follow the same kind of story, shooting scenes for several films at the same time is not a big problem for actors or directors. This also helps to keep the cost(成本) of Bollywood movies lower than the cost of Hollywood movies.

1.What is Not True about Mumbai?

A. It is the movie capital of India.

B. The new name is Bombay.

C. More movies are made there than in Hollywood.

Annie slept in the front of the seat with her father drove through the darkness. ”We’re almost there!” Dad announced cheerfully. “Soon well be observing and counting owls at the state park.” Yawning, Annie nodded and smiled. The time was 4:30 a.m. Looking out into the darkness, Annie remembered learning in school that most owls are active at night, when they hunt for food. During the day they sleep in hard-to-find spots.

“Dad, why do you need to count owls?” she asked. “It’s important for the scientists to have current information about bird populations,” he explained. “We want to know which birds have decreased in number and whether any new kinds of birds are coming into a certain area. You and I will write down the kinds of birds that we see today and keep a record of how many times we see each kind. The we’ll send out a report to a scientific organization that is collecting about birds from people all over the county.”

Dad pulled into the parking lot of the state park. Then, with flashing in hand, they began their hike into the woods. Annie zipped up her coat and tried to keep from trembling. She had not expected the morning to be so frigid. Luckily her gloves were in her pocket.

Suddenly Annie’s father stooped and gestured for her to be still. Obeying, Annie did not take another step. She thought she heard a low crying up head. “That’s certainly a screech owl,” her father whispered. “Let’s get a look at it.” After looking more closely, Annie could see that it was a small owl. Sensing danger, the owl narrowed its eyes and pulled its feathers tightly against its body. Annie carefully wrote down in her notebook that they had seen a screech owl.

Walking a little farther, they came to a tall oak tree. “This looks like a perfect spot to attract owls,” Dad said. “I’m going to play a recording of common call of the barred owl. Maybe we can get one to answer.’ Annie could hardly believe her ear. The recorded all sounded as if the bird were asking, “who cooks for you?” Moments later Annie thought she heard a return call in distance. She held her breath and waited. Suddenly a huge bird landed very quietly on a branch above them.

Annie had long forgotten how cold it was. She stood in wonder, shining her flashlight on the bird and studying it carefully. The barred owl was nearly tow feet tall. Gray feathers surrounded its dark eyes. The bird did not matter. Annie would never forge the image of the powerful barred owl.

1.Annie and her father went to the state park to _________.
