The Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that seeks to address the needs of the homeless population
in the United States. It is a network of offices, some of which provide food and houses for the homeless
population. and some of which fight for the passing of laws that would give every American the right to a place
to call home. According to the Coalition's studies, of over two hundred million people living in th U?ited States,
up to three million are homeless and the number is still growing since the late 1970s, fast rising house prices,
large cuts in government supported housing programs, and economic recession have made it impossible for
many Americans to meet housing costs. Sadly, this has resulted in a number of persons being forced to leave
their homes and or unable to find new affordable homes. According to another research, families with children
appear to be the fastest-growing part of the homeless population, making up 39% of it. The old idea of a
homeless person, that of the single man who gets drunk all the time, is no longer true. A much larger part of
the population now finds itself homeless. Even worse, once a person becomes homeless, he often finds it
impossible to find a job, since most employers require anyone who wants a job from them to provide a home
address on a job application.

1. The word "address" in the first line probably means _____.
A. talk about
B. deal with
C. fight for
D. write to
2. How many people are homeless in the U.S. according to the Coalition studies?

A. 39% of the population.
B. 200 million people.
C. About 3 million people.
D. About one-fifth of the population.

3. Homeless people often have difficulty finding a job because _____.
A. they have no home addresses
B. they mostly have a drinking problem
C. they aren't supported by government programs
D. they often don't have enough work experience
4. What is the main cause of the rising number of the homeless in the U.S.?
A. The passing of new housing laws.
B. The fast growth of family size.
C. The slow construction of houses.
D. The ever-rising price of housing.

Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillerOne" app", called iShoot, is a game that features tanksAnother one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination(目的地)ISteam clouds the iPhoue screen when you breathe into the microphoneYou can then write in the" steam" on your phone screen

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choiceIt's not just teenagers who"plug in" to their music--iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages

And if games e-books and music aren't enough to keep you occupiedThen perhaps you would prefer a film?      Don't you think your schoolbag is too heavy to bear? The e-schoolbag will free you from
the weight.
It is said that e-schoolbags are going to be brought into use in Chinese middle schools
soon. An experiment with several hundred e-schoolbags will begin in seven cities: Beijing,
Shanghai, Dalian, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang. And the e-schoolbags
are going to cover all over China if the experiment shows to be successful. In fact, the
e-schoolbag should perhaps be called an e-notebook. It is a small hand-held computers
for school students.
Heavy schoolbags have long been a serious problem for school students. The average
schoolbag of middle school students weighs up to 5 kilos. But the e-schoolbag will change
everything. It is much lighter than a usual schoolbag, weighing under 1 kilo.
Also, it is no bigger than a usual book, but it can still hold all the things for study, such
as a textbook, a notebook and exercise book. They could be made into chips that are as
small as a stamp. The students can read the text page by page on the screen. They can
still take notes using a special electronic pen. If they want to know the meaning or the
pronunciation of a new word, or even e-mail their teachers, it's just a press of a button.
In some foreign countries, it is becoming common. But it is hard to tell when people
will receive this new form of study. Some say that e-textbooks can easily be broken,
some say that it is not good to students' eyesight to look at the screen for long. But only
time will tell.
1.The e-schoolbag has many functions EXCEPT _______.
A. It can pronounce the words.
B. It can send e-mails.
C. It can be used as a dictionary.
D. It can phone somebody.

B. We can do a lot of work based on the programmers of the chips.
C. The e-notebooks are very perfect.
D. We will not make notes because the e-notebook can make all by itself.
4.Which of the following can be the general title of the passage? ______
A. An Experiment In China
B. Please Change Your Schoolbag
C. A New Invention, A New Schoolbag
D. Chips

Don't_believe_all_of_the_stereotypes(模式化的形象)you_may_have_heard_about_Americans.Even the ones that are true in general may not be true about specific individuals or a large part of the population. For example, although Americans tend to be louder than people from other cultures(especially at athletic
events),many of the people you meet will be quiet and polite. Some people may be intolerant, but most will be pleasant and welcoming.Remember that American films and television exaggerate(夸張)in order to
generate excitement, and so present a rather false picture of what life in the United States is really like.
Therefore, tourists in the US are not always on their best behavior.
Americans do tend to be more informal than people from other countries. It is common for Americans
to wear casual clothing to school and to greet professors by first name. However, good manners and
politeness are always appreciated. If you are polite, and dress a little more formally than your American
friends, it will not be poorly thought of.
However, some businesses require their employees to wear a uniform or a suit.It would be improper to wear a Tshirt and blue jeans to a job interview. Some of the more prestigious restaurants require a coat and a tie.Americans tend to dress up for cultural events(the opera, theater and ballet)and to dress down for
athletic events.Formal wear is required at weddings and funerals, or any other event with religion. If you
rely on the stereotypes, you will likely put yourself into an embarrassing situation.
1. The underlined sentence probably means________.
A. some of the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans are not true
B. you should not believe the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans
C. none of the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans should be believed
D. none of the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans should not be believed

C. casual clothing makes others uncomfortable
D. American students are impolite to their teachers
4. We can learn from the passage that________.

Don't make sudden changes. Start slowly, by waking just 15 to 30 minutes earlier than usual. Get used to this for a few days. Then cut back another 15 minutes. Do this gradually until you get to your goal time.
Sleep earlier. You might be used to staying up late, perhaps watching TV or surfing the Internet. However, you just might fall asleep much sooner than you think.
Put your alarm away from your bed. You have to get up out of bed to shut it off. By then, you're up.
Now you just have to stay up.
Go out of the bedroom as soon as you shut off the alarm. Don't find an excuse to go back to bed. My
habit is to force myself into the bathroom. By the time I've washed my hand, and the toilet of course, and
looked at my ugly face in the mirror, I'm awake enough to face the day.
Allow yourself to sleep in once in a while, as long as it's not a regular thing. I do it maybe once a week or so.
Make it a reward. At first you're forcing yourself to do something hard, but if you do something
pleasurable as part of your morning routine, soon you will look forward to waking up early. My reward used to be to make a hot cup of coffee for myself and read a book. Now I look outside (or better yet, get
outside!) and watch the sky turn light. It's beautiful. It's now my favorite time of day.
Getting up early is a reward in itself for me and so will it be for you.
1. Which of the following does the writer suggest we do?
A. Get up at our goal time to start the new habit.
B. Shut off TV and the Internet, and face the day.
C. Get up at the same time every day to keep the habit.
D. Do something enjoyable in the morning to begin the day.
2. We should get into the bathroom right after we get out of bed because________.
A. that is part of our routine
B. we really need a cold wash
C. the alarm clock needs to be shut off
D. that will make ourselves completely awake
3. The writer enjoys ________most in the morning.
A. doing some washing
B. making a cup of coffee for himself
C. watching the daybreak
D. sleeping late, and thinking in bed
4. This passage is written to________.
A. share the writer's experience
B. give tips for becoming an early bird
C. persuade people to get up early
D. help get rewards from getting up early
