題目列表(包括答案和解析)

Since my retirement(退休) from teaching music in 2001, I have spent a good deal of time painting as an artist. I actually began drawing again in the summer of 1995 when my father died, so perhaps I was trying to recover from the loss of my father, or maybe it was just that it brought back memories of him. In any case, I drew pen and ink animals and landscapes(風景畫) much influenced(影響) by Krenkel and St. John for five years.

For some strange reason, I had been waiting until my retirement to start doing watercolors again, but as soon as I walked out of the school door for the last time I picked up my brushes and rediscovered Andrew Wyeth, who quickly became my favorite artist. I had looked through all the art books I had on my shelves and found his watercolors to be the closest to how I thought good watercolors should look. So I painted landscapes around Minnesota for three years and tried out many other types of painting. However, watercolors remained my first choice, and I think I did my best work there, showing my paintings at a number of art exhibitions.

Art is now together with my piano playing and reading. There is a time for everything in my world, and it is wonderful to have some time doing what I want to do. As Confucious once said, “At seventy I can follow my heart’s desire.”

What is the text mainly about?

A. Learning to paint in later life.                     B. How to paint watercolors

C. An artist-turned teacher                          D. Life after retirement

The author started drawing again in 1995 because_________.

A. he hoped to draw a picture of his father

B. he couldn’t stop missing his father

C. he had more time after retirement

D. he liked animals and landscapes

We can infer from the text that the author__________.

A. had been taught by Krenkel and St. John

B. painted landscapes in Minnesota for 5 years

C. believed Wyeth to be the best in watercolors

D. started his retirement life at the age of severty

How does the author probably feel about his life as an artist?

A. Very enjoyable.   B. A bit regretful     C. Rather busy.        D. Fairly dull.

According to the report by Baekeland and Hartmann, two American authoritative psychotogical research centres, the "short sleepers" had been more or less average in their sleep needs until the men were in their teens. But at about age 15 or so, the men voluntarily began cutting down their nightly sleep time because of pressures from school, work and other activities. These men tended to view their nightly periods of unconsciousness as bothersome interruptions, in their daily routines.
In general, these "short sleeps" appeared ambitious, active, energetic, cheerful,, conformist (循規蹈矩的) in their opinions, and very sure about their career choices. They often held several jobs at once, or workers full - or part - time while going to school. And many of them had a strong urge to appear "normal" or "acceptable" to their friends and associates. When asked to recall their dreams, the "short sleepers" did poorly.More than this, they seemed to prefer not remembering. In similar fashion, their usual way of dealing with psychological problems was to deny that the problem existed, and then to keep busy m the hope that the trouble would go away. The sleep patterns of the “short sleepers" were similar to, but less extreme than, sleep patterns shown by many mental patients categorized as manic (瘋人).
The "long sleepers" were quite different indeed.Baekeland and Hartmann report that these young men had been lengthy sleeps since childhood. They seemed to enjoy their sleep, protected it, and were quite concerned when they were occasionally deprived (剝奪) of their desired 9 hours of nightly bed rest. They tended to recall their dreams much better than the "short sleepers." did. Many of the "long sleepers" were shy, anxious, introverted (內向), inhibited (壓抑) , passive, mildly depressed, and unsure of themselves (particularly in social situations).Several openly states that sleep was an escape from their daily problems.

A.both of them are healthy habits
B.not both of them are unhealthy habits
C.either of them is not unhealthy habits
D.neither of them is healthy habits
51.When sometimes they cannot enjoy adequate sleep, the long sleepers might ____.
A.feel extremely depressed        B.become energetic
C.appeared disturbed         D.feel disappointed
52.The writer implies (暗示) that short sleepers _____ in the text.
A.are ideally vigorous even under the pressures of life
B.often neglect the consequences of inadequate(不足的)sleep
C.do not know how to relax properly
D.are more unlikely to run into mental problems

There was a Roman general in the 3rd century BC named Regulus who always kept his word. This fact was well known even to Rome’s enemy—Cathage. Once, he lost a battle and was taken prisoner and sent to a Carthage prison for a period of time. Finally, his captors came to him with an offer, which they hoped would cause the Romans to give in, thus ending the war.
They asked General Regulus to go back to Rome. They wanted him to tell the Romans that Carthage was winning the war and it was useless for Rome to continue fighting. They also said that if he refused to do as they asked, he would have to sail back to Cathage and serve as a prisoner of war in their prison. Since General Regulus was a man of honor, they knew he would keep his word and return to Carthage.
Regulus set sail for Rome and on his arrival, he was immediately taken to the authorities (當局). He knew how the war was progressing from the enemy's point of view. He told the Romans that they should not give up but continue fighting, as it would only be a matter of time until Rome would win the battle over Carthage. So the Romans decided to continue the war effort. Large groups of soldiers were sent to battle due to General Regulus' suggestion.
Regulus went home to see his wife and his children but only for a short time. With deep sorrow, he informed them that he had given his word that he would return to Carthage and to his prison. Though they wished he would stay, his family knew that he must keep his word and return. He returned to Carthage as promised but Rome soon won the war.
60. This passage mainly tells us that General Regulus was____.
A. a determined man                             B. a man of his word
C. loyal to his homeland                          D. a patient man
61. The underlined word “captors" (in Paragraph 1) probably refers to “____”.
A. people who are taken prisoners             B. people who have lost a battle
C. people who have won a battle              D. people who keep others prisoners
62. After General Regulus' visit to Rome, the Romans_____.
A. continued the war                             B. made peace with Carthage
C. gave in                                      D. accepted their failure

Until I took Dr. Offutt’s class in DeMatha High school, I was an underachieving student, but I left that class determined never to underachieve again. He not only taught me to think, he convinced me, as much by example as words that it was my duty to achieve and to serve others.

Neither of us could know how our relationship would develop over the years. When I came back to DeMatha to teach English, I worked for Dr. Offutt, the department chair. My discussions with him were like graduate seminars(研究生討論課) in adolescent development, classroom management and school leadership.

After several years, I was named department chair, and our relationship shifted(變化) again. I thought that it might be terrible chairing the department, since all of my former English teachers were still there, but Dr. Offutt supported me through. He knew when to give me advice about curriculum(課程), texts and personnel(人事), and when to let me plan my own course.

In 1997, I needed his opinion about leaving DeMatha to become principal at another school. If he had asked me to stay at DeMatha, I might have. Instead, he encouraged me to catch the chance.

Five years ago, I became the principal(校長) of DeMatha. Once again, Dr Offutt was there for me, letting me know that I could depend on him. I have learned from him that great teachers have an inexhaustible wealth of lessons to teach.
