Popular music in America is what every student likes．Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class, and at lunch．Students with cars buy large speakers and play them loudly as they drive on the street．

New York State has passed the USA’s first state law that doesn’t allow drivers to talk on cell phones while driving． The law will begin on November 1． Drivers who are caught using cell phones will be given only warnings instead of fine （罰款） during the first month．
From December 1, first - time violators （違法者） will pay a $100 fine． A second time will cost $200 and every time after that will cost $500．
Starting in 1999, at least 23 countries, including the Great Britain, Italy, Israel and Japan, don’t allow drivers to use cell phones while driving．

Computers can solve difficult problems and control（控制） the machine which is not simple． Many people use small computers called calculators（計(jì)算器） to deal with numbers quickly． Scientists use large computers to solve many problems at the same time． You can play games with computers, and some computers can help you learn languages． The Reading Machine is a special kind of computer． It can read books for blind（盲的） people．
The Reading Machine is made of three parts: a scanner（顯示屏）, a computer and a voice synthesizer（合成器）, these three parts are like your eyes, your brain（大腦） and your voice． The scanner is the “eye” of the machine． It scans, or looks at the words on the page of a book and changes them into signals（信號）． These signals then go into the computer, the “brain” of the machine． The computer analyzes（分析） the signals and recognizes（認(rèn)出） the words and then sends information about the words to the voice synthesizer． The voice synthesizer makes the sounds of the words．
To use the machine, a blind person simply opens the book and puts its face down on the scanner． The machine “reads” the words on the page． When one page is finished, the blind person turns the page and puts the book on the scanner again． The Reading Machine can read in standard（標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的） voice or in a special fast voice． It can read words with small letters, large letters, or italics（斜體的）．
