Some 13 million European children under 18 use the Internet for schoolwork, games and music according to research done by Nielsen’s “Net-rating”. The study covered Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Experts advised parents to limit the time their kids spend on line and keep them away from chat rooms.

Chat to the magic Mum

British author J. K. Rowling, mother of magic boy Harry Potter, will do an Internet interview about her new book “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” on June 26. I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓約) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here’s what I wanted to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion (提升), the bigger paycheck, the larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure (休閑), it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.

I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.

By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion (激情) as it ought to be lived.

60. The best title of this passage probably is _____________.

B. By learning from her friends.

       C. Through an unfortunate experience.

62. By the underlined sentence “It is so easy to exist instead of to live” in the fifth paragraph, the author really means that people tend to _____________.

D. forget the most important lessons in life

Scientists smiled as the three young whales swam through the ocean, turning over, jumping, and racing one another in circles around the ship. After spending seven months in a 60,000 gallon (228,000-liter) pool at the New England Aquarium(水族館)in Boston, Mass, the whales were now free.

The pilot whales, named Notch Small and Tag, had been staying at the pool ever since they were saved after running aground (擱淺地) on a Cape Cod beach in Massachusetts last December. Although about 60 other whales died during that running aground the three young whales were saved and nursed back to health. Last June, the whales were freed from a ship about 120 miles (152 kilometers) off the coast of Massachusetts. When the three whales finally swam away from the ship. scientists on board cheered. The event, say the biologists, marked the first time that a group of whales has been saved, cared for, and freed back into the wild.

No one knows what causes whales to run aground. Some biologists think that gently sloping beaches may upset the whales’ sonar systems(聲納系統(tǒng)). Whales find schools of fish and other objects by bouncing sonar waves off the objects. When a whale approaches a gently sloping beach, the sonar waves may bounce away(反彈)from the whale instead of toward it. The whale may end up in shallow water and run aground.

Other experts think a leader of a group of whales becomes ill and beaches itself. Because whales often band together, other whales soon follow, running aground as well.

64. After spending seven months in a pool the pilot whales, named Notch Small and Tag, were freed in ____________.

       A. autumn                                                B. spring

B. had never been successful

D. had once been successful

66. Some scientists believe that once the leading whale in a group falls ill and runs aground, ___________.

       A. others may band together

B. others may fall ill, too.

       C. others will not care for it and run away

       D. others will follow and beach themselves, too.

67. When a whale approaches a gently sloping beach, ____________.

       A. it may be able to send out sonar waves

       B. its sonar waves may not bounce back to it

       C. its sonar waves may disappear

       D. its sonar waves become stronger

D

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy, who could not have been more than seven or eight years old, replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed (壓抑的) lately.”

This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school.

The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike any more. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.

Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?

Human development is based not only on innate (天生的) biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social route to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.

In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (揭示) machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information, and indiscriminately (不加區(qū)分地), to all viewers alike, whether children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.

Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practices. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.

68. According to the author, feeling depressed is ______________.

A. a sure sign of a psychological problem in a child

       B. an unavoidable case of children’s mental development

       C. something hardly to be expected in a young child

       D. a mental sale present in all humans, including children

69. The phenomenon that today’s children seem adult-like is considered by the author to ___________ .

       A. the widespread influence of television

       B. the poor arrangement of teaching content

       C. the fast pace of human intellectual development

       D. the constantly rising standard of living

70. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children?

A. It enables children to gain more social information.

       B. It develops children’s interest in reading and writing.

       C. It helps children to memorize and practice more.

       D. It can control what children are to learn.

The secret of success

Since 1989, Dave Thomas, who died at age 69, was one of the most recognizable faces on TV. He appeared more than 800 commercials for the hamburger chain named for his daughter. “As long as it works,” he said in 1991, “I’ll continue to do those commercials.”

Even though he was successful, Thomas remained troubled by his childhood. “He still won’t let anyone see his feet, which are out of shape because he has never had proper-fitting shoes,” Wendy said in 1993 and told us that sixty-one years ago, Dave Thomas was born to a single mother, he was adopted as a baby by Rex and Auleva Thomas when he was six weeks old. After Auleva died when he was 5, Thomas spent years on the road as Rex traveled around seeking construction work. “He fed me,” Thomas said, “and if I got out of line, he’d beat me.” “When I found out I was adopted, I didn’t want to talk about it, and as I talked to people I grew older… I got really a lot of encouragement.” When he was 12 years old, Thomas started working at a barbecue restaurant in Knoxville, Tenne. Moving out on his own at 15, Thomas worked, first as a waiter, in many restaurants. But he had something much better in mind. “I thought if I owned a restaurant,” he said, “I could eat for free.” When he was 24, meeting with Harland Sanders led Thomas to a career as a manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that made him a millionaire in 1968.

A year later, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers, in Columbus, Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to-order burgers. With 6, 000 restaurants worldwide, the chain now makes $ 6 billion a year in sales.

Thomas got married in 1954 to Lorraine and they had four grown kids besides Wendy. Although troubled by his own experience with an adoption, he felt they could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation for adoption in 1992. Later, Thomas, who had left school at 15, graduated from Coconut Great High School in Florida. He even took Lorraine to the graduation dance party. The kids voted him “Most likely to succeed”. Thomas is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lorraine, five children and 16 grandchildren. His foundation helps raise awareness for the 134000 foster children available for adoption, and helps make adoption more affordable. “The Dave you saw on TV was the real Dave,” said his friend Pat Williams. “He wasn’t a great actor or a great speaker.” He was just Joe Everybody.”

六、

One day, a mother and her son were taking a walk when they saw a little girl fall over. The boy wanted to help her up but his mother stopped him and said, “Don’t do that, otherwise others will think it was you who knocked her down.” A few days later, when she got home, the mother was shocked at seeing her son just leave the fallen oil bottle lying on the ground. She asked him why he didn’t put it in place, but the boy talked back, “If I had straightened the bottle up, you would have thought that I did it.”

I disagree with what the mother did in the story. I think parents should not only care for their children’s health, but their minds. They should let their children know it’s a pleasure to help others who are in trouble.

聽(tīng)力原文

(Text 1)

M: I think it’s going to rain.

W: I guess so. The skies are dark and cloudy.

(Text 2)

M: Lucy is going back to China next month, Alice.

W: Oh, really?

M: And she will not meet Richard this time.

(Text 3)

W: I hate to say it. But Jacky isn’t doing well in the film.

M: Well, I think he’s only playing a different type of role. My sister thinks he is still the best.

(Text 4)

M: Professor Miners, could I talk to you about my paper?

W: Sure. Come to my office between two to three. It’s Room 340.

(Text 5)

W: OK. Time to go home.

M: I can’t. I haven’t finished the report about the newly opened restaurant.

W: Well. If you carry on working like that, you’ll make yourself ill.

(Text 6)

M: I haven’t seen you for a long time. Where have you been?

W: I went to New York to visit my sister and stayed there for two months. Actually, I really went to meet my new nephew.

M: That’s great! How old is he?

W: Well. He was five months old when I got there. And he could possibly be the most beautiful baby I have ever seen.

M: What did you do in your sister’s home?

W: I helped the baby and played with him a lot, which was nice. But what I enjoyed most was feeding him.

(Text 7)

M: Air pollution is so bad in this city. I think the government should stop people from driving cars on certain days.

W: You have a point. Air pollution is a problem. But not letting people drive on certain days is a bad idea. People have to go to work by car.

M: I’m afraid I don’t agree with you there. Reducing air pollution is really important. People are so used to driving that they don’t think about ways to do things. If we stop them from driving on certain days, maybe they could think of new ways to get around.

W: I see your point. But I still think it wouldn’t be possible to stop people from driving.

 (Text 8)

M: Let’s go and have lunch together.

W: OK!

M: By the way, I’m thinking of going to New Zealand around Christmas for three weeks. It’s such a beautiful country. I’ve never been there before.

W: Have you booked the flight?

M: Not yet. I’m planning to book my flight in two weeks’ time

W: Book your flight right now.

M: Why?

W: Because the longer you leave it, the more expensive it will be. As a matter of fact, the prices may double at Christmas time. New Zealanders usually go home for Christmas.

M: Then I’m going to book my flight tomorrow morning.

(Text 9)

M: Hello!

W: Hello, Mike! This is Jane.

M: Oh. Hello, Jane!

W: Listen, Mike! I’ve got a real problem.

M: What is it?

W: The car’s broken down.

M: Oh, not again.

W: Yeah. I checked the oil and I checked almost everything. It’s just not starting at all.

M: You have to get rid of it, you know.

W: I know,Iknow. But look, the thing is, I’ve got to pick Tom up at the airport. Can I……?

M: Use my car? Yes, of course.

W: That’ll be great! It’s very kind of you.

M: Come on when you like. I don’t need it till tonight.

W: OK! I’ll be around in about an hour. Thanks a lot!

M: It’s all right. See you then!

W: See you!

(Text 10)

W: OK! When we met last week, we talked about different kinds of short stories and some well-known short story writers. I remember that many of you said you liked the American writer Earnest Hemingway, right? I hope you all followed my advice and finished reading his story “A day’s wait”, because as I said, we’re going to study it together in today’s lesson. Now since you’re supposed to have read this story, let’s have some discussion. Please look at the four questions on the blackboard. First, when and where does the story take place? Second, what does the boy read for in the story and what kind of person does he show himself to be? Third, what kind of person is the boy’s father? Four, what is the writer’s main purpose of writing the story? I’d like you to work in groups of four or five and present your answers in ten minutes. Is everything clear?
