In the centre of London there is a tall white building with the name “Bush House”. It is the home of BBC English.
BBC is the abbreviation of the British Broadcasting Corporation. It is an organization maintained by the government, providing British people with broadcasting and TV service.
At first, BBC was established as a private business. It began to broadcast on February 14, 1922. In 1927, it was reorganized and replaced by the British Broadcasting Corporation. In November, 1936, it became the first TV broadcasting corporation in the world with TV programmes broadcast.
BBC provides people with the latest news, entertainment and education. These programmes are not under the control of the government. Nor are they affected by other organizations. In the meantime, BBC does not express its own opinion on international affairs or public policy.
BBC has two TV channels, covering the whole country, that is BBC-1 and BBC-2 and three radio broadcast webs, one for family service, another for entertaining programmes, the third for special interesting programmes. The third web broadcasts four programmes. They are classical music, teaching programmes, sports and famous arts and common knowledge. BBC programmes include foreign language programmes, broadcast in 35 foreign languages.
The BBC World Service sends radio programmes around the world in 42 languages. With a regular audience of about 140 million listeners, it reaches more people than any other ternational broadcaster. The World Service also prepares news programmes for its sister television organization and is responsible for a major new gathering service getting information form the world’s media. The World Service receives a direct grant from the British Parliament for operating international broadcasting.
BBC English is part of the BBC World Service. BBC English is for people who want to improve their English. It broadcasts all kind of programmes, which change from month to month. There is a special grammar programme for explaining difficult grammar points. There are programmes about life in Britian. There is also a programme about the differences between written and spoken English. English lessons are broadcast every day on the radio with explanations in English and other languages. They are the easiest to follow. For example, BBC English broadcasts programmes for China with explanations in Chinese.
It is not difficult to find out information about the programmes. You can write to BBC English and ask for any information you need.
It is necessary to use a short-wave radio to pick up the programmes. Sometimes it is difficult to receive them clearly. If you do have difficulties, it is better to try once again another day.

The camera crew went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay. Then at nine o’clock they took it to the director. “Here it is, sir,” they said, and gave it to him. He was very pleased.
They all went into the studio. “All right,” the director explained, “now our hero and heroine are going to say goodbye. Run the film backwards so that we can see the ‘sunset’ behind them.”
The “sunset” began, but after a quarter of a minute, the director suddenly put his face in his hands and shouted to the camera crew to stop.

File-sharing occurs whenever one individual sends a file to another. The only way to even try to limit this process is to monitor all communication between ordinary people. Despite the crackdown on Napster, Kazaa and other peer-to-peer(對(duì)等網(wǎng)絡(luò)) services over the past decade, the volume of file-sharing has grown exponentially. Even if the authorities closed down all other possibilities, people could still send copyrighted files as attachments to e-mails or through private networks. If people start doing that, should we give the government the right to monitor all mail and all encrypted(加密) networks? Whenever there are ways of communicating in private, they will be used to share copyrighted material. If you want to stop people doing this, you must remove the right to communicate in private. There is no other option. Society has to make a choice.
The world is at a crossroads. The internet and new information technologies are so powerful that no matter what we do, society will change. But the direction has not been decided.
The internet it still in its infancy, but already we see fantastic things appearing as if by magic. Take Linux, the free computer operating system, or Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. But where technology opens up new possibilities, our intellectual property laws do their best to restrict them. Linux is held back by patents, the rest of the examples by copyright. The public increasingly recognizes the need for reform.
Our manifesto(聲明) is to reform copyright laws and gradually abolish(廢除) the patent system. We oppose mass surveillance (監(jiān)視)and censorship(審查制度) on the net, as in the rest of society. We intend to devote all our time and energy to protecting the basal civil liberties on the net and elsewhere.
Political decisions taken over the next five years are likely to set the course we take into the information society, and will affect the lives of millions for many years into the future. The information revolution is happening here and now. It is up to us to decide what future we want.

Two-legged, humanoid (類人的) robots such as Honda Motor Co. Ltd’s ASIMO would likely have an easier time climbing up stairs inside homes than a robot that moves on wheels, developers say.
But it will be some time before such devices make their way into people’s homes.
“They may look smart, but they are still quite stupid,” Shimoyama said. “I don’t think they will ever be as smart as humans.”
While safety is an obvious concern, robots also need to be sensitive to people’s needs.
Researchers at Fujitsu Frontech Ltd and Fujitsu L aboratories responsible for developing “Enon”, a guide and patrol (巡邏) robot designed for use in shopping malls and corporate facilities (公共場(chǎng)所), are working on this.
Enon, which has a humanoid upper body but no legs, is equipped with a touch screen on its chest and space in its belly to carry loads weighting up to 10 kg.
In guide mode, it will detect a newcomer and approach the person with a nod and a greeting: “Are you a visitor? Hello.”
Visitors requiring directions can point to icons (圖標(biāo)) displayed on Enon’s chest screen. If the restroom icon is pressed, the screen will display a map that shows the way.
The robot will then face and point in the direction of the restroom, although it won’t actually walk the visitor there.
Enon is now in use at four locations in Japan, including a shopping mall near Tokyo. The main goal is to make it more helpful for the elderly.
“People who work in the transportation sector often ask whether we can build a robot that will find elderly people who look lost in train stations, and ask them if they are all right,” said Toshihido Marita, director of Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd’s autonomous system laboratory. “Actually that is hard to do, very hard,” he said.
