Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing?
Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and
talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his
parents when he was a teenager.
"I would never have said to my mom,' Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?'" says Ballmer. "There was just a complete gap in taste."
Music was not the only gulf (分歧). From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier
generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are
comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust
and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, "To my mother, my best friends."
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.
"There's still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change
happening," says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. "In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents."
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving(演化的) roles and attitudes. They see
the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more
democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.
"My parents were on the 'before' side of that change, but today's parents, the 40-year-olds,were on
the 'after' side," explains Mr. Ballmer. "It's not something easily accomplished by parents these days,
because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be
a parent now."

A recent study, which was published in last week's Journal of the American Medical Association,
offers a picture of how dangerous it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver
with three or more passengers has three times the possibility of a serious accident, compared with a
teenager driving alone.
The authors also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased greatly after 10 p.m., and
especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night
accident.
Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says
the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with "really stupid behavior" than with just a lack of driving experience. "The basic issue is that adults who are responsible for giving out licenses fail to
recognize how complex and skilled driving is." he says.
Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to mitigate (使緩解) the problem is to have
states set up so-called graduated licensing systems, in which getting a license is a process with several
stages. A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove himself able to drive in the presence(在場)
of an adult, followed by a period of driving with night of passenger restrictions (限制) before graduating
to full driving rights.
Graduated licensing systems have reduced teenage driver crashes, according to recent studies.
1.Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage?
A. Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after 10 p.m.
B. A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.
C. Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.
D. A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at midnight.
2. According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly due to _____.
A. their lack of driving experience
B. their frequent driving at night
C. their wrong way of driving
D. their driving with passengers
3. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Teenagers should spend more time learning to drive.
B. Driving is a skill too complex for teenagers to learn.
C. Restrictions should be forced on teenagers demanding to take driving licenses.
D. The licensing department is partly responsible for teenagers' driving accidents.
4. A suggested measure to be taken to reduce teenagers' driving accidents is that _____.
A. the licensing system should be improved
B. they should be forbidden to take on passengers
C. they should not be allowed to drive after 10 pm
D. driving in the presence of an adult should be made a rule

find that guidance,to find that deep source of wisdom that's in our dreams every night,we need to pay
attention to our dreams."
But many dreams are scary and horrible. How can we understand these nightmares? Doctor Siegel
says they are reflecting especially intense emotion or unresolved conflict. The stronger the emotion in the
dream, whether it's pleasure or fear, the likelier the dream is to be important.

Honey (蜂蜜) from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most
people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a
wild bees' nest (巢) and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult
to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and
unexpected helper一a little bird called a honey guide.
The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax (蜂蠟) in the beehives (蜂房).
The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest,
it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing
animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the
curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower
reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and
the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.
Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts
to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive
whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax
candles are being lit.
1. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest?
A. It's small in size.
B. It's hidden in trees.

you are to the exam, the more chance you have of storing and retaining crucial information. But do not
overdo it. _1_ An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period, so in the days leading up

tackle, begin by attempting the one you think is your strongest. It will give you more confidence when
you see a well-answered question down on paper. Also remember to write clearly, and do not be afraid
to express the unexpected: after all, examiners can get very bored marking stereotypical answers.

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences.
Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often the
experiences in nightmares appear repeatedly.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget
bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it
might reduce, or possibly wipe out, the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body
releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far, the research has suggested that only the
emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are wiped out. They are not
sure to what degree people's memories are affected.
The research has caused a lot of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They
say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
"Some memories can ruin people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them
in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a
professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that maybe the pills can change people's memories and
changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us all avoid
the mistakes of the past.
"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are.
I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out." said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist (倫理學家).

B. the pill will certainly stop people's emotional memories

Monarch butterflies (黑脈金斑蝶) are a common summer sight in the northern United States and Canada.
These large orange and black insects (昆蟲) brighten parks and gardens as they fly lightly among the flowers.
What makes monarchs particularly interesting is that they migrate (遷飛)-all the way to California or Mexico
and back. They are thought to be the only insect that does this.
Every year in the late summer monarchs begin their journey to the south. Those heading for Mexico go first
for the Louisiana-Mississippi area, then fly across the Gulf of Mexico into Texas. Once in Mexico, they settle
themselves in one of about fifteen places in a mountain forest filled with fir trees. Each place provides a winter
home for millions of monarchs. The butterflies are so many that they often cover entire trees. When spring
comes, they begin their long journey north.
The question is often asked whether every butterfly makes the round-trip journey every year. And the answer
is no. The average monarch lives about nine months. So one flying north might lay eggs in Louisiana and then
die. The eggs of that generation may be found in Kentucky; the eggs of the next generation may end up in
Wisconsin or Michigan. The last generation of the season, about the fourth, will make their way back to Mexico
and restart the journey.
Scientists learn about monarchs' migration by catching and making marks on the insects. By recatching a
monarch with such a mark and noticing where it came from, the next scientist can get to know things like the
butterfly's age and its routing (路線).
1. One of the places where monarchs spend the winter is _____.
[     ]
A. the Gulf of Mexico
B. an area in Mississippi
C. a forest in Mexico
D. a plain in Texas
2. The routing of monarchs' migration can be learned _____.
[     ]
A. by collecting their eggs in the mountains
B. by examining the marks made on them
C. by comparing their different ages
D. by counting the dead ones in the forests
3. What is the subject discussed in the passage?
[     ]
A. Life and death of monarchs.
B. Scientists' interest in monarchs.
C. Winter home of monarchs.
D. Migration of monarchs.
