Attention to detail is something everyone can and should do —especially in today’s tight job market. Bob Crossley, a human-resources expert notices this in the job applications that come across his desk every day. “It’s amazing how many candidates cross out themselves,” he says.

“Resumes (簡(jiǎn)歷)arrive with all kinds of faults. Some candidates don’t bother to spell the company’s name correctly. Once I see a mistake, I cross out the candidates,” Crossley concludes. “If they cannot take care of these details, why should we trust them with a job ?”

Can we pay too much attention to details? Absolutely. Perfectionists struggle over little things at the cost of something larger they work toward. “To keep from losing the forest for the trees,” says Charles Garfield, the professor at the university of California, San Francisco, “We must constantly ask ourselves how the details we’re working on fit into the larger picture. If they don’t, we should drop them and move to something else.”

Garfield compares this process to his work as a computer scientist at NASA. “The Apollo moon launch was slightly off course 90 percent of the time,” says Garfield. “But a successful landing was still likely because we knew the exact coordinates of our goal. This allowed us to make adjustments as necessary.” Knowing where to go helps us judge the importance of every task we undertake .

Too often we believe what accounts for other’s success is some special secret or a lucky break. But rarely is success so mysterious. Again and again, we see that by doing little things within our grasp well, large rewards follow.

At a primary school in a small town in the east of South Carolina, second-grade teachers Garneau and Lynne are convinced that separating elementary-age boys and girls produces immediate academic improvement in both genders(性別).

David Chadwell, South Carolina’s coordinator of single gender education says, “Boys and girls learn, hear and respond to their surroundings differently. We can teach boys and girls based on what we now know.”

Male and female eyes are not organized in the same way, he explains. The composition of the male eye makes it sensitive to motion and direction. “Boys interpret the world as objects moving through space,” he says.

The male eye is also drawn to cooler colors like silver and black. It’s no accident boys tend to create pictures of moving objects instead of drawing the happy colorful family, like girls do in their class.

The female eye, on the other hand, is drawn to warmer colors like red, yellow and orange. To attract girls, Chadwell says, the teacher doesn’t need to move as much as in boy’s class. Using descriptive phrases and lots of colors in presentations or on the blackboard gets their attention.

Boys and girls also hear differently. “When someone speaks in a loud tone, girls interpret it as yelling,” Chadwell says. “They think you’re mad and can shut down.” Girls are more sensitive to sounds. He advises girls’ teachers to watch the tone of their voices. Boys’ teachers should sound more forceful, even excited.

A boy’s nervous system causes him to be more cautious when he is standing, moving, and the room temperature is around 69 degrees Fahrenheit. Stress in boys, he says, tends to increase blood flow to their brains, a process that helps them stay focused. Girls are more focused when seated in a warmer room around 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Girls also respond to stress differently. When exposed to threat and conflict, blood goes to their guts(腸道), leaving them feeling nervous or anxious.

These differences can be applied in the classroom, Chadwell adds. “Single gender programs are about maximizing the learning.”

What is David Chadwell’s attitude toward separating elementary-age boys and girls while learning?

Dear all,

Please read Professor Hume's email about his next lecture on Rosa Parks.

Susan Miller

Secretary

***************************************

Dear Susan,

Please forward this message to students of my history class.

Besides the life story of Rosa Parks in the textbook, the students are also required to read the passage below and some related stories that can be borrowed from the school library.

Ted Hume

The early experiences of Rosa Parks(1913-2005), long known as the “mother of the civil rights movement, ”were not different from those of many African-Americans at that time. The black woman, however, turned the course of American history in December 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. “By sitting down, ”remarked John Lewis, “she was standing up for all Americans. ”

Among the numerous awards Parks received in her life were the Presidential Medal of Freedom(1996)and the Congressional Gold Medal(1999).

Parks died on Oct. 24, 2005. At St. Paul A. M. E. Church in Montgomery, a large crowd including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice celebrated her life. Rice said she and others, who grew up when the political activities of Parks held public attention, might not have realized her impact(影響)on their lives, “but I can honestly say that without Mrs. Parks, I probably would not be standing here as Secretary of State. ”

After her casket(靈柩)was placed at the Capitol, U. S. President Bush, members of Congress and ordinary Americans paid their respects. In American history Parks is the first woman to lie in state at the Capitol, a very high regard usually reserved for Presidents of the United States.

What is the main purpose of Susan’s email?

A. To make arrangements for Professor Hume's class. B. To introduce to the students Rosa Parks.

C. To help the students organize a lecture.         D. To answer Professor Hume's last email.

What does the underlined word “forward” mean?

A. Explain.              B. Send.             C. Take.                 D. Read.

The political impact of Rosa Parks lies in the fact that she .

A. helped Condoleezza Rice achieve political success

B. joined the civil rights movement at a young age

C. made racial equality a common value in American society

D. set a good example in her early life for other black Americans

How was Rosa Parks treated after her death?

A. She was named “mother of the civil rights movement. ”

B. She was received by President Bush at the Capitol.

C. She was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

D. She was honored to lie in state at the Capitol.

A student and his teacher were walking through the forest. The student was disturbed(擾亂) by the fact that his mind was in constant unrest(不安). He asked his teacher, “Why most people’s minds are restless, and only a few have a calm mind? What can one do to still the mind ?”

The teacher looked at him, smiled and said, “I will tell you a story. An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly came, flying and buzzing near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again, and the elephant waved it away denovo”. This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and noisy? Why can't you stay for a while in one place?" The fly answered, "I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses pull me constantly in all directions and I cannot resist them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still?" The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule my attention. Whatever I do, I get immersed(沉湎于) in it. Now that I am eating, I am completely immersed in eating. In this way I can enjoy my food and chew(咀嚼)it better. I rule and control my attention, and not the other way around."

The student's eyes opened wide and smile rose on his face. "I understand! If my five senses are in control of my mind and attention, then my mind is in constant unrest. If I am in charge of my five senses and attention, then my mind becomes calm".

"Yes, that's right", answered the teacher, "The mind is restless and goes wherever the attention is. Control your attention, and you control your mind".

How did the elephant drive the fly away?

  A. With its long tail.           B. With its long ears.

C. With its strong legs         D. With its long trunk.

The reason why the elephant stayed calm and still was that _______.

   B. it was too heavy to move around like the fly

   C. it paid much attention to things around it

   D. it concentrated (集中) on what it was doing

A. in total   B. in common   C. once again   D. as usual

The main purpose of the passage is to tell the readers _______

A. the relationship between the mind and attention

B. how to make use of the five senses

C. people should stay calm and still

D. only the elephant can control the mind and attention

Packaging is an important form of advertising.A package can sometimes motivate someone to buy a product. For example, a small child might ask for a breakfast food that comes in a box with a picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in breakfast food.Pictures for children to color or cut out, games printed on a package, or a small gift inside a box also motivate many children to buy products or to ask their parents to buy for them.

Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing.Food products sold in reusable containers are examples of this.Although a similar product in a plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product. The size of a package also motivates a buyer.Maybe the package had “Economy Size” or “Family Size” printed on it.This suggests that the larger size has the most product for the least money. But that is not always true.To find it out, a buyer has to know how the product is sold and the price of the basic unit.

The information on the package should provide some answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember is that a package is often an advertisement. The words and pictures do not tell the whole story.Only the product inside can do that.

From the passage we know the buyer pays more attention to __________.

       A.the size of a container

       B.a(chǎn) container with attractive picture

       C.a(chǎn) well-designed container

D.a(chǎn) plain container with low cost

What suggestion does the author give in the passage?

A.It’s not good to buy the product which is sold in a glass or dish.

B.The quality of a container has nothing to do with the quality of the product.

C.The best choice for a buyer is to buy a product in a plain package.

D.A buyer should buy what he needs most rather than a well-designed package.

What is the best title for the passage?

       A.How to Package a Product.

       B.How to Make an Advertisement.

       C.How to Sell Product.

D.How to Treat the Package Wisely.
