The thing is, my luck’s always been ruined.Just look at my name:Jean. Not Jean Marie, or Jeanine, or Jeanette, or even Jeanne.Just Jean.Did you know in France, they name boys Jean? It’s French for John. And okay, I don’t live in France. But still, I’m basically a girl named John.If I lived in France, anyway.

This is the kind of luck I’ve had since before Mom even filled out my birth certificate. So it wasn’t any big surprise to me when the cab driver didn’t help me with my suitcase.I’d already had to tolerate arriving at the airport to find no one there to greet me, and then got no answer to my many phone calls, asking where my aunt and uncle were.Did they not want me after all?Had they changed their minds?Had they heard about my bad luck-all the way from Iowa-and decided they didn’t want any of it to rub off on them?

So when the cab driver, instead of getting out and helping me with my bags, just pushed a little button so that the trunk(汽車后備箱)popped open a few inches, it wasn’t the worst thing that had ever happened to me.It wasn’t even the worst thing that had happened to me that day.

According to my mom, most brownstones in New York City were originally single-family homes when they were built way back in the 1800s.But now they’ve been divided up into apartments, so that there’s one-or sometimes even two or more families-per floor.

Not Mom’s sister Evelyn’s brownstone, though.Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Ted Gardiner own all four floors of their brownstone. That’s practically one floor per person, since Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Ted only have three kids, my cousins Tory, Teddy, and Alice.

Back home, we just have two floors, but there are seven people living on them. And only one bathroom. Not that I’m complaining.Still, ever since my sister Courtney discovered blow-outs, it’s been pretty frightful at home.

But as tall as my aunt and uncle’s house was, it was really narrow-just three windows across.Still, it was a very pretty townhouse, painted gray. The door was a bright, cheerful yellow. There were yellow flower boxes along the base of each window, flower boxes from which bright red-and obviously newly planted, since it was only the middle of April, and not quite warm enough for them.

It was nice to know that, even in a sophisticated(世故的)city like New York, people still realized how homey and welcoming a box of flowers could be.The sight of those flowers cheered me up a little.

Like maybe Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Ted just forgot I was arriving today, and hadn’t deliberately failed to meet me at the airport because they’d changed their minds about letting me come to stay.

Like everything was going to be all right, after all.

  Yeah.With my luck, probably not.

I started up the steps to the front door of 326 East Sixty-Ninth Street, then realized I couldn’t make it with both bags and my violin.Leaving one bag on the sidewalk, I dragged the other up the steps with me.Maybe I took the steps a little too fast, since I nearly tripped and fell flat on my face on the sidewalk.I managed to catch myself at the last moment by grabbing some of the fence the gardeners had put up…

(1)

Why did the author go to New York?

[ ]

A.

She intended to go sightseeing there.

B.

She meant to stay with her aunt’s family.

C.

She was homeless and adopted by her aunt.

D.

She wanted to try her luck and find a job there.

(2)

According to the author, some facts account for her bad luck EXCEPT that ________.

[ ]

A.

she was given a boy’s name in French

B.

the cab driver didn’t help her with her bags

C.

her sister Courtney discovered blow-outs

D.

nobody had come to meet her at the airport

(3)

The underlined phrase“rub off on”in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

[ ]

A.

have an effect on

B.

play tricks on

C.

put pressure on

D.

throw doubt on

(4)

From the passage, we can know that ________.

[ ]

A.

the author left home without informing her mother

B.

the author arrived in New York in a very warm season

C.

her aunt’s family lived a much better life than her own

D.

her aunt and uncle were likely to forget about her arrival

The country of Chile is struggling to recover from one of the most powerful earthquakes in history. The quake struck the South American nation early Saturday morning. It registered 8.8 on the Richter scale.Ex-perts say the earthquake in Chile is among the five most powerful earthquakes ever recorded.

The epicenter of the earthquake is about 70 miles north of the city of Concepci6n.The area has been rocked by dozens of aftershocks since the big quake hit on Saturday morning.

On Sunday, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet updated reports on the toll the earthquake has taken.“It’s an enormous catastrophe,” she said.Countless buildings and roadways have been destroyed or badly damaged.Rescuers continued to work around the clock to find survivors who may be trapped under the rub-ble of fallen buildings.Government officials estimate more than 2 million people have lost their homes.

Bachelet assured people that food and medical aid were on the way.Ten thousand members of the Chil-ean military have been dispatched to help in the relief and recovery efforts. Many of the country’s major gro-cery stores have started giving away basic food and supplies to people in the affected areas.Secretary-Gener-al of the United Nations spoke to President Bachelet by telephone. He assured her that the United Nations“stands ready to assist the Chilean government’s rescue and recovery efforts ”.

The earthquake in Chile comes less than two months after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that Haiti suf-fered in January.Although the earthquake in Chile was more powerful than the one in Haiti, the damage is unlikely to be as severe.Earthquakes are more common in Chile, and many buildings and homes there are constructed to withstand tremors better. Also, the area of Chile most affected by this earthquake is not asheavily populated as Port-au-Prince, where the epicenter of the Haitian quake was located.Furthermore, Chile is one of South America’s richest, best-organized countries. Its government has more supplies and people available to effectively respond to national emergencies.

The energy released by the quake caused shock waves to roll across the Pacific Ocean in the form of tsu-namis(海嘯)that have the potential to do great damage to coastal areas. Some of these waves struck the Chilean coast, causing major damage to seaside towns.Coastal communities in Russia,Japan, and the Unit-ed States were concerned, too, but there were no reports of severe damage from the waves that eventually reached the countries’shores.

(1)

Who is leading the earthquake relief efforts in Chile?

[ ]

A.

The Chilean government and military.

Geologists and other scientists.

C.

The United Nations peacekeeping forces.

D.

Secretary-General of the United Nations.

[ ]

A.

Chile is one of the richest,best-organized countries in South America.

B.

Chile has constructed many buildings for the people.

C.

Chile knows how to respond to a national emergency.

D.

The epicenter area of the Chile earthquake is less heavily populated than that of the Haiti’s quake.

(3)

One result of the earthquake in Chile was ________.

[ ]

A.

severe storms in Russia and Japan

B.

massive waves in the pacific Ocean

“Tear’em apart!” “Kill the fool!” “Murder the referee(裁判)!”

These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed.Volumes have been written about the way words affect us.It has been shown that words having certain connotations(含義)may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior.I see the term “opponent” as one of those words.Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms.

The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent ”is “adversary”:“enemy” “one who opposes your interests.” Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such times, winning may control one’s intellect, and every action, no matter how gross(rude), may be considered acceptable.I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player’s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player stepped forward to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then exclaimed.“Are they wet enough now?”

In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way.I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent’s international and illegal blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play.Off the court, they are good friends.Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from(goes against)normal behavior.

Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated(提升)the game to the level where it belongs therefore setting an example to the rest of the sporting world.Replacing the term “opponent” with “associate” could be an ideal way to start.

The dictionary meaning of the term “associate” is “colleague”; “friend”; “companion.” Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate” rather than “opponent.”

(1)

[ ]

A.

He refused to continue the game.

B.

He angrily hit the referee with a ball

C.

He claimed that the referee was unfair.

D.

He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt

[ ]

A.

calling on players to use clean language on the court

B.

raising the referee’s sense of responsibility

C.

changing the attitude of players on the sports field

D.

regulating the relationship between players and referees

To help the environment, many Americans have made the change from paper and plastic bags to reusable grocery bags. But a report by a Florida newspaper says that reusable grocery bags sold by some supermarkets contain high levels of lead(鉛).Lead is a metal that can be harmful to humans, especially young children, Now, Senator Charles Schumer is asking the US government to investigate(調查)the use of lead in reusable shopping bags.

“When our families go to the grocery store looking for safe and healthy foods to feed their kids, the last thing they should have to worry about is poisonous bags.” Schumer said, “A quick investigation will allow everyone to make informed, timely decisions.” Schumer added.

Lead in the bags is not likely to rub off(因摩擦而粘在……上面)on food. But over time, paint on the bags can rub off and the bags can wear out. When this happens, lead can be released(釋放).

The Tampa Tribune newspaper said certain bags sold at Publix and Winn-Dixie supermarkets had lead levels that were a concern to health officials. The affected bags were found in Florida. But Publix has more than 1,000 stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Sough Carolina and Tennessee.Publix says that all of its bags are under current laws about lead content, but that they have asked the makers of the bags to reduce the lead levels in the product.

The bags with the highest levels of lead had fancy designs and many pictures.Plain reusable bags without decoration were found to contain little lead.Consumers worried about lead levels in reusable bags can change to cloth or string bags.Paper bags are also a good choice, since paper can be recycled(回收).

Since 2007, Publix supermarkets have sold more than 13 million reusable bags. The store says because shoppers have made the change to reusable bags, it has saved more than 1 billion paper and plastics bags.

D.

October 15th is Global Hand washing Day.Activities are planned in more than twenty countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap

Experts say people around the world wash their hands but very few use soap at so-called critical moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.

Global Hand washing Day is the idea of the Public-private Partnership for hand washing with soap. The goal, they say, is to create a culture of hand washing with soap. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germs(細菌).They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap.Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Then, wash well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth.

The Partnership says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend washing.Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell, which increases the chances that people will wash again.

It also says that washing hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet could save more lives than any medicine. It could help reduce cases of diarrhea(痢疾), which is the second leading cause of child deaths, killing more than one and a half million children a year, by almost half.
