     閱讀下面短文,并根據所讀內容在文章后表格中的空格內填入一個恰當的單詞。
The population of the United States is growing older and will continue to do so. According to a report,
39 million Americans will be 65 or older by the year 2010, 51 million by 2020,and 65 million by 2030.
The "graying" of the United States is mainly due to the fact that people in the U.S. are living longer. As
a matter of fact, the number of U.S citizens 85 years old and older is growing six times as fast as the rest
of the population. It is also largely due to the old- growing of the "baby boomers", the generation born after
World War Ⅱ. In 1957,over 4.3 million babies were born. More than 75 million Americans were born between
1946 and 1964,the largest generation in U.S. history. In less than twenty years, millions of them will become
elderly people.
The "graying" of the U. S. will greatly affect the nation's family and workforce. One likely development
will be a gradual change in the family unit; it will move away from the nuclear family and towards a
multigenerational family. The other likely development will be a change in the proportion (比例) of the nation's
workforce. In 1989 there were 3.5 workers for every person 65 or older; by the year 2030, there will only be
2 workers for every person 65 and older.
                                     Title:    1   . U.S.
1. Graying 2. 2010 3. Cause/Reasons 4. Citizens' 5. Effects/Results
6. change 7. Workforce 8. Nuclear 9. Workers 10. 1989

請閱讀下列應用文及相關信息,并按照要求匹配信息.
首先,請閱讀下列幾種急救措施的相關信息:
                                                                                                      A

If the person has stopped breathing, you must try to start his/her breathing at once. The best thing
is to use the mouth-to-mouth way. Lay the person down with his/her head lower than the rest of his/her
body and breathe into his/her mouth. If the person has something stuck in his/her throat, try to remove
it with your fingers, or by hitting him/her on the back.

                                                                           B
If the person is bleeding badly, you must try to stop the bleeding. Press on the bleeding point
with a piece of clean cloth and hold up the part of body which is bleeding. Bleeding from large
cuts may require immediate medical treatment.

                                                                             C

If you are bitten and scratched by an animal, apply pressure to the area with a clean
bandage or towel until the bleeding stops, and then wash the cut under cold running water.
Cover the broken part if there is any, with a piece of clean cloth. Then see a doctor as soon
as possible.

D
If you are hurt by fire or something very hot, cool the burnt part at once. Run cool (not cold) water
over the burnt part until it is less painful. Put a piece of dry clean cloth over the burnt part. If the area
is large, use a tub, shower or a garden hose.

E
If there is a fire, never use a lift in the building because it’s very dangerous. The lift may get trapped
between floors. Use the stairs and leave the building at once. It is the safest way to leave the high
building when the fire happens.

F
If some people have swallowed poison, they should be taken to a hospital at once. With some sleeping
pills, for example, it is a good thing to make the patient sick by pushing your fingers down his throat.
But if he has swallowed some kind of acid, or anything that burns, it would be a bad thing to make him
sick. The poison would burn his throat as it came up.

     以下是五人所遭遇的情況,請匹配適合他們的應對措施.
1.Liz is a housewife and lives in a high building. One day when she was cooking, she heard
some people crying "fire". A house near hers was on fire.

Parents should stop blaming themselves because there's not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager
problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and
helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.
I've seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right
from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman.
I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懶散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no
attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick
glance at me. His mother was ashamed. "I don't know what to do with him these days," she said.
"He's forgotten all the manners we taught him." He hasn't forgotten them. He's just decided that he's not
going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from
the sofa onto the floor.
Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare
at me and say, "I don't like your dress; it's ugly." One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school.
The other has left home.
"Where did we go wrong?" their parents are now very sad. Probably no one is to blame on this issue.
1. This text is most probably written by _____.
A. a specialist in teenager studies
B. a headmaster of a middle school
C. a parent with teenage children
D. a doctor for mental health problems
2. The underlined word "it" in the second paragraph refers to _____.
A. the change from good to bad that's seen in a child
B. the way that parents often blame themselves
C. the opinion that a child has of his parents
D. the advice that parents want their children to follow
3. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters _____.
A. pay no attention to them
B. are too busy to look after them
C. have come to hate them
D. feel helpless to do much about them
4. What is the writer's opinion about the sudden change in teenage children?
A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it.
B. Parents should pay still more attention to the change.
C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers.
D. Parents are at fault for the change in their children.

Information has always been at the center of human communication. You may ask why. Well,
communication between people contains giving and receiving information. The way we give and
receive information today has experienced a revolution in the development of the mass media in the
20th century.
The first truly mass communication medium was the newspaper.  For the first time in history people
could read about events in their country and from around the world every day. However, there were
two problems with newspapers of that time. Firstly, newspapers were available only in large cities, for
getting newspapers to the countryside was a difficult and timeconsuming (耗時的) task. Secondly,
newspapers weren't always reliable, as there was a limited range of opinions.
Nowadays, we can choose from a wide variety of sources to get information. Television and the
Internet have given us the chance to be informed about everything the minute it happens. Large
numbers of radio and TV stations, satellite channels and millions of websites help people keep up
with the latest news. People live in history and are part of it.
The media have come a long way in the last century and there is no doubt that we now live in the
information age. Whatever type of media we choose, it all comes down to the need for information.
This will always be a basic need as long as communication is part of human nature.
1. Information is considered the center of human communication because ________.
A. human communication means information exchange
B. human communication involves people's participation
C. information is now experiencing a revolution
D. information helps people gather together
2. What was the historical contribution of the newspaper as a source of information?
A. It made the mass communication truly develop.
B. It helped the mass communication develop in cities.
C. It kept people timely informed about home and world events.
D. It kept reliable information available in big cities.
3. The third paragraph mainly tells us that technology helps ________.
A. information easily available
B. people be part of history
C. inform everything timely
D. produce the latest news
4. It can be concluded from the last paragraph that a basic need today is ________.
A. communication
B. information
C. high technology
D. media types

Many of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in history books are great
conquerors and generals and soldiers, whereas the people who really helped civilization forward
are often never mentioned at all.
We do not know who first set a broken leg, or launched a seaworthy boat, or calculated the
length of the year; but we know all about the killers and destroyers. People think a great deal of
them, so much so that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure
of a conqueror or a general or a soldier. And I think most people believe that the greatest countries
are those that have beaten in battle the greatest number of other countries and ruled over them as
conquerors.
     It is just possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight; so do savages;
hence to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which an animal or a savage(野人) is good,
but it is not to be civilized. Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling them
how to do it most efficiently-this, after all, is what conquerors and generals have done-is not being
civilized. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized people ought to be able
to find some way of setting their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off the greater
number of the other side, and then saying that that side which has killed most has won. And not only
has it won, but because it has won, it had been in the right. For that is what going to war means; it
means saying that might(權利) is right.
1.The author thinks that the conquerors and generals and soldiers ________.
A. only appear glorious in history books
B. are greater than any other people
C. are not as great as described in history books
D. do not really help civilization forward
2. As it is indicated in the passage, the figure of a conqueror or a general or a soldier is put
on the highest pillars in the great cities of the world mainly because ________.
A. people respect them very much
B. they fought bravely to protect their cities
C. people think they fought too brutally(野蠻地)
D. they conquered many cities and countries
3.What is the writer's attitude towards the countries that ruled over a large number of other countries ?
A. Positive.
B. Critical.
C. Ironic.
D. Respectful.
4.The author says that civilized people________.
A. should not have any quarrels to settle
B. should not fight when there are no quarrels to settle
C. should settle their quarrels without fighting
D. should settle their quarrels by killing the other side

Cities with high levels of homeownership-in the range of 75%, like Detroit and St. Lous -had on
average considerably lower levels of economic activity and much lower wages and incomes. Far too
many people in financial problems are trapped in homes they can't sell, unable to move on to new centers
of opportunity.
The cities and regions with the lowest levels of homeownership-in the range of 55% to 60% like Los
Angeles and New York-had healthier economies and higher incomes. They also had higher levels of
happiness and well-being.
I was shocked to read these interesting points that Richard Florida made in his recent article. Let
me try to understand. The people in Detroit and St. Louis are less happy than the people in New York,
and Los Angeles. And, the reason is because of home ownership rates?
First, to compare them to New York City (the economic capital of the world), Los Angeles (the entertainment capital of the world) seems unfair. Most people in almost any other city in the world might be less
happy!
Next, let's try a different way of determining whether renters are happier than homeowners. Why
don't we ask them? Fannie Mae's National Housing Survey 2010 reported:
75% of current renters believe owning a home makes more sense.
67% plan to buy a home at some point in the future.
When they asked current renters for the major reason to buy a house, these were their answers (they
could pick several answers):
78% said it was a good place to raise children.
75% said because they would feel safe.
70% said because you have control your own space.
If you believe renters are happier, you would also have to believe the majority enjoy living in a less
safe environment, which wouldn't be a good place to raise children and would be a place where they
have less control of their space.
1.Which of the following is a fact?
A. People in Los Angeles earn high incomes because of its low homeownership rate.
B. New York's low homeownership rate increases people's happiness levels.
C. Detroit's high level of homeownership causes its economic problems.
D. St. Louis has a higher level of homeownership than Los Angeles.
2. In his article, Richard Florida tried to express that ________.
A. people in Los Angeles are happier than those in St. Louis
B. Renting a house is better than owning a house
C. Detroit's economy is healthier than New York's economy
D. New York and Los Angeles are happiest cities
3.The writer believes that New York Cities and Los Angeles________.
A. pay employee highest wages in America
B. benefit from low levels of homeownership
C. are leading cities across the globe
D. are best American cities to live in
4. From Fannie Mae's survey report, we can know that________.
A. paying rent makes more sense
B. most homeowners plan to sell their houses
C. most renters prefer to become homeowners
D. parents need to buy a house for their children
5.According to the passage, current renters' reasons to buy a house are the follows except _______.
A. to have a good place to raise children
B. to live in a safer environment
C. to make money
D. to have control of their own space
