Let us begin by saying what causes our dreams. Our dreams do not come from another world. They are not messages from some outside source .They are not a look into the future, either.
All our dreams have something to do with our feelings, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold , his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping on ice or in snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experience you have today.
So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has effect on you while you are sleeping(feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.)and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and the interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, home-sick soldiers of their families and prisoners of freedom.
To show you how this is happening while you are asleep and how your needs and wishes can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of the experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbed cotton. He would dream he was in hospital and his charming girlfriend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling gently his hands!
There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that did not come true. In other words dreaming is a way of having your wishes carried out.

A. you are in a state of being cold    B. you are in a state of being tired

38. Older children often dream of examinations probably because        .
A. they are interested in exams       B. they are often worried about their studies

The man known as the French “ Spiderman” climbed The New York Times building on Thursday to draw attention to global warming, and six hours later another climber made the same climb.
Alain Robert, 45, the first person to climb the 52-story skyscraper, told reporters ahead of the climb on the UN World Environment Day his aim was to raise awareness of global warming since this is one of the main problems for our time.
His manager Julie Cohen said she knew nothing about the second climber. She added that Robert’s climbs were without risk and he was a professional climber.
Robert climbed without equipment except for climbing shoes. He was greeted at the top by the police who arrested him.
The second climber was also immediately arrested at the top by police. His climb at the height of the evening rush hour drew crowds and was shown live on at least one TV station.
Several people in the crowd shouted“jump” when he stopped part of the way to rest, but there was a loud cheer as he reached the top. Wearing red pants , black climbing shoes and a white T-shirt that read “ Malaria(瘧疾) No More”, the man laughed as he was led away by the police from the building.
“ We don’t look at him as a modern spiderman,” said James Coil, a member of the police emergency services unit. “ We look at him as somebody who not only puts his life at risk but is one of members of the public as well.”
Martin Edlund, director of “ Malaria No More”, which aims to prevent the one million yearly deaths from malaria, said the climber had nothing to do with them, but they appreciated his enthusiasm.

A group of graduates, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said:“If you noticed, all the nice—looking, expensive cups were taken up,leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.”
“What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup,but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other’s cups.”
“Now consider this:Life is the coffee and the jabs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life, and do not change the quality of life.Sometimes,by concentrating only on the cup,we fail to enjoy the coffee. So,don’t let the cups drive you...enjoy the coffee instead.”

第三部分 閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

On October 16th 1987, southern Britain was hit by a hurricane, the worst storm to hit Britain since 1703.

Twenty years later, Britain is remembering the disaster known as The Great Storm. 15 million trees across the area were uprooted by the wind, and a wet autumn had made the ground very muddy (泥濘的).

The falling trees caused damage to buildings and vehicles, and blocked roads and railway lines, forcing everyone, from adults to schoolchildren to stay at home.

There were also blackouts across the area, as power lines were damaged by falling trees and flying debris (殘骸). People used candles and flashlights (手電) for light, and gas stoves and open fires to cook food.

The storm lasted for 4 hours, and killed 18 lives. The bad weather caused so much damage mostly because of the fact that most people were completely unprepared, and be-cause many weather forecasters didn’t think it could cause a problem.

Earlier that week, weather forecasts had predicted severe (嚴重的) weather, but forecasters thought it would miss Britain and only affect the English Channel. A well-known weatherman, Michael Fish, ever said that the storm wouldn’t happen, though in fact he was talking about a hurricane in Florida at that time.

The unusual storm caused more than £1billion in dam-age, and hundreds of people were injured.

Could the same thing happen today in Britain? Well, as a result of climate change many people think that sudden and severe weather changes are more likely. However, technology has improved, and satellites give us a much more accurate(精確的)picture of future weather. If another Great Storm comes along, the British public will probably be warned earlier and have more time to prepare!

56. The bad weather in 1987 in Britain caused a lot of damage because ______.

A. it caused a great flood                    B. most people were not prepared

C. it happened in the summer                            D. there was no weather forecast

57. Which of the following was NOT one of the effects of The Great Storm?

A. There were a number of deaths and injuries.   B. The electricity went out.

C. It hit Florida first.                                D. Roads and railway lines were blocked.

58. One week before The Great Storm, weather forecasts ______.

A. could not predict severe weather at all

B. had predicted the severe weather, but some weather forecasters thought it would miss Britain

C. showed that the terrible storm would not hit the English Channel

D. showed that The Great Storm would affect both England and Florida

59. We learn from the last paragraph that ______.

A. this kind of bad weather will not happen in Britain again

B. bad weather will happen more frequently in Britain now

C. people will be better prepared if there is bad weather in Britain now

D. bad weather may be stopped with the development of technology

“How can I learn English well?” This is a question many students ask. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you’re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect.

This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought.

Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English.

Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.

56. In the writer’s opinion, the most effective way in learning English is ________.

A. to practise speaking, writing and feeling it

B. to forget your own native language

C. to translate everything into his own language

D. to memorize the English words and grammatical rules

57. “Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. ”This sentence means that memorizing your own language can ________.

A. help you to study English well      B. stop you mastering English

C. make English easy to learn         D. help you notice mistakes

58. Equally important is to feel the language. “to feel the language” here means________.

A. to get a knowledge of English by touching

B. to be able to read and write English

C. to translate English into your own by imagining

D. to be able to experience the rich sensation of the language
