I was walking along the deserted main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking somewhere to make a phone call. On numerous drives throughout my childhood, my mother would suddenly pull over the car to examine a flower by the side of the road or rescue a beetle (甲蟲) from certain tragedy while I, in my late teens and early twenties, sat impatiently in the car.
