Should parents ever hit their children?

Research suggests many of us are likely to respond “no”, and public support for spanking(打屁股) has been falling over the years. But surverys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit to spanking their child at least once.

I was raised in a zero-tolerance home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment. And, no, I don’t feel I was damaged by it.

Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children.

But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn’t the answer.

Two years ago, Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive.

Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades. He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers(同等的人). It may be that children with lower IQqs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterpoductive(反作用的) to their mental development, as well.

Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks(用巴掌打) on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit.

Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never spanked. There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physi punished. Gunnoe’s research suggests they don’t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spank.

There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers(脾氣). But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline without ever turning to physical puishment.

According to the first three paragraphs, the author was probably hit by her parents when       .

A.they were dissatisfied with her grade

B.she showed no respect for the elder

C.they cannot control their temper

D.their discipline turns out to be not strict enough

According to Murray Straus, children who are physically punished      .

A.are less aggreesive toward others when they get older

B.have slower physical development

C.benefit from occasional spanking

D.may develop lower IQs than their peer

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A.40 percent of children grow up without ever being spanked

B.Children who suffer less physical punishment are better students

C.Occasional open-handed spanking on the bottom are mentally harmful

D.Researchers disagree over whether smacking is mentally harmful to children

The author seems to agree that       .

A.parents should determine whether a child needs to be smacked or not

B.children who have been spanked tend to behave better than those who haven’t

C.good parents discipline their children in a fair and reasonable way

D.physical punishment should be the last resort of any parent

One of the quahlies that most people admire in others isthe willingness to admit one's mistakes. It is extremely hardsometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,”and it is even harder to say,“I was wrong, and you were rightabout that.”

I had an experience recently with someone admitting tome that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago.He told mehe had been the manager of a certain store in the neighborhoodwhere I grew up,and he asked me if I remembered the eggcartons(in many countries, eggs are sold by the dozen and areput in cartons.).Then he related an incident and I began toremember unclearly the incident he was describing.

I was about eight years old at the time.I went into the store with my mother to do some shopping. On that particular day.I must have found my way to the food department wherethe incident took place.

There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there were lots of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons. The cartons were put three or four feet high.I must have stopped in front of the piles of egg cartons.Just then awoman came by pushing her shopping cart and knocked off the cartons.Forsome reason,I decided it was up to me to put theeggs back together,so I went to work.

The manager heard the noise and came rushing over tosee what had happened. When he appeared,I was on myknees looking at some of the cartons to see if any of the egg were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the on who just did it.He severely reprimanded me and wanted meto pay for any broken eggs.I tried to explain, but it did no good.Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident,it is plain that the manager did not.

Parking has long been a major headache for drivers in Shanghai. The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are one million cars on the road in Shanghai but only enough public parking space to provide room for 15percent of them. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park.

The city is seeing a rise in private car owners. In March, the city sent out 2,000 private car licenses, the highest number of licenses ever sent out in a month. And prices rose to 14,600 yuan, 500 more than in February. Industry experts say this suggests that local people have a strong, active interest in buying cars.

By the year 2020, the number of automobiles in Shanghai will probably reach two million. If one parking lot is for each car, then a lot of parking space should be built for these vehicles.

Downtown Shanghai is most short of parking space. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in downtown areas is not practical and doesn’t provide an ideal solution. The idea of “ Park & Ride” system has been suggested. This means that drivers can leave their vehicles in car par nearby subway or bus stations and ride public transport to go downtown. Based on this idea, the city will limit the number of parking lots in downtown areas and demand higher parking fees but build more parking areas near main subway and bus stops.

1.The underlined phrase “ mapping out ” in the first paragraph means __________.

A. making     B. arguing        C. controlling        D. inspiring

2. About __________ drivers can find places to park their cars in Shanghai now.

A. 850,000     B. 1,000,000       C. 150,000        D. 2,000,000

3. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us ?

A. The city sent out more private licenses in February.

B. Less and less people bought cars in March.

C. The city sent out less private licenses in March.

D. More and more people are going to buy cars.

4. According to the idea of a “ Park & Ride ” system, the city will __________.

A. send out more private car licenses

B. build more parking lots near bus stops

C. encourage people to buy more cars

D. build more parking areas in downtown
