Jean is a bright young woman who comes from a rich and famous family. She goes to a good university and has everything that money can buy. Well, almost everything. The problem is that the people in Jean’s family are so busy that they can hardly find time to be with her. In fact, Jean is quite lonely.

So Jean spends a lot of time on her QQ. She likes being anonymous(匿名), talking to people who do not know about her famous family and her rich life. She uses the name Linda on QQ and has made a lot of friends who she keeps in touch with quite often.

Last year Jean made a very special friend on QQ. His name was David and lived in San Francisco. David was full of stories and jokes. He and Jean had a common (共同的) interest in rock music and modern dance. So it always took them hours to talk happily on QQ and sometimes they even forgot their time. Of course, they wanted to know more about each other. David sent a picture of himself: He was a tall, good-looking young man with a big, happy smile. As time went by, they became good friends and often sent cards and small things to each other.

When Jean’s father told her that he was going on a business trip to San Francisco, she asked him to let her go with him so that she could give David a surprise for his birthday. For many people around the world, a subway journey means speeding from one dull station to the next, surrounded by too many uncomfortable, impatient people. But on the Moscow Metro, taking the subway is like walking through a national heritage site. Depending on where you get off, you’ll receive a brief course in architectural movements and face colorful glass windows, marble(大理石) columns, gilded(鎏金的) mosaics and painted scenes from Russian history.

“These extraordinarily beautiful places are unlike any metro station I’ve ever seen, “says Vancouver-based photographer David Burdeny.

When Burdeny, who himself has a master’s degree in architecture, first found out about Moscow’s metro stations, he was struck by the work of art. In all, he has photographed 20 of the most beautiful stations.

Burdeny had originally planned to focus on Russian stations more generally, taking photos of examples in both St. Petersburg and Moscow.

“But when I saw the stations in Moscow, they just completely blew away the St. Petersburg ones,” he says.

Shooting in the subway sounds simple, but it is not without challenges. For one thing, Burdeny had to figure out a way to access them between 00:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., when the stations were closed.

In the end, he settled on Arbatskaya Metro Station, whose vaulted(拱狀的) arches he found the most beautiful. But it also represented a challenge he was not sure if he was able to overcome: conveying the hugeness of the spaces. The Arbatskaya platform, for example, stretches 820 feet.

“Some of the arches are quite long,” he says. “When you enter them, they’re just so completely grand.”

1.We can learn from the text that David Burdeny .

A. is a world-famous architect

B. took photos of Moscow subway stations

C. took the subway to and from work

D. is studying Russian history

2.What Burdeny found challenging was .

A. when to take photos of Moscow subway stations

B. Whether to work in St. Petersburg or Moscow

C. where to get off to study the Moscow metro system

D. how to photograph the long arches at Arbatskaya Metro Station

3. What does the underlined word “Shooting” mean in Paragraph 6?

A. Firing bullets from a gun

B. Making movies

C. Taking photographs

D. Throwing the ball at the basket.

Researchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger's personality simply by looking at the person's shoes. “Shoes convey useful information about their wearers”, the authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality.

Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 University of Kansas researchers looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire.

Some of the results were expected: People with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier shoes were typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are strange enough. For example, “practical and functional ''shoes were generally worn by more “pleasant" people, while ankle boots were more linked with “aggressive” personalities. The strangest of all may be that those who wore “uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have “calm” personalities. And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take extreme care of them, you may suffer from “attachment anxiety", spending lots of time worrying about what other people think of your appearance. There was even a political calculation in the mix with more liberal (主張變革的) types wearing “shabbier and less expensive” shoes.

The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personalities, but researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were showing the deep side of their personalities.

1.What does this text mainly tell us?

A.Shoes Call hide people's real personalities.

B.Shoes convey false information about the wearer.

C.People's personalities call be judged by their shoes.

D.People know little about their personalities.

2.Which of the results is beyond people's expectation?

A.Wealthy people often wear expensive shoes.

B.Pleasant people like wearing uncomfortable shoes.

C.Aggressive people are likely to weal" ankle boots.

D.Flashier shoes are typically worn by outgoing people.

3.People suffering from “attachment anxiety” tend to

A.wear strange shoes B.worry about their appearance

C.have a calm character D.become a political leader

4.The author wrote the text in order to

A.inform us of a new study

B.introduce a research method

C.teach how to choose shoes

D.describe different personalities
