You will go to college some day and college is one of the most exciting stages of one’s life.If you wish to make the most of your campus(校園) experience and become a better person after those four years, then first you ought to make friends.Close friends contribute to your selfgrowth for they provide you with moral support that is so important to survive the stressful college life.Friends can lend a helping hand when necessary like collecting your homework when you’re too sick to leave your dorm, and help you develop the right attitude by pointing out to you your weaknesses.
Being home most of your life and then suddenly finding yourself on your own in a large campus without your parents to hold your hand can be annoying. However, rather than thinking about your missing home too much, why not see this new stage in your life as an opportunity for selfgrowth and develop the right attitude that will prepare you for the rigors of postgraduation life, particularly when you join the workforce?
Specialinterest clubs or organizations are great for selfgrowth. Here, not only do you get the opportunity to meet with likeminded people, you can also discover more things about your field of interest.Club meetings usually include lively discussions,so go there with the right attitude. You should try to build a good name in the organization by being respectful, active and considerate to others.
You might not like all of your professors, but they are there to provide knowledge you need to be successful in your chosen field. Thus, show up for each class with the right attitude and determination to learn.Whether you get along well with your professors or not has a huge effect on your selfgrowth as it is a measure of how well you can respect authority and obey requirements.
Actively participating in a class debate(辯論) or lecture contributes to your selfgrowth as it helps you build confidence in speaking up and improves your communication skills. It also helps you develop the right attitude by exercising diplomacy(外交術) when you choose your words carefully especially when discussing a very politically sensitive issue and exercising patience when dealing with classmates who shoot down your ideas.

Boiler rooms are often dirty and steamy, but this one is clean and cool.Fox Point is a very new 47unit living building in South Bronx, one of the city’s poorest areas.Twothirds of the people living there are formerly (以前) homeless people, whose rent is paid by the government. The rest are lowincome families. The boiler room has special equipment, which produces energy for electricity and heat.It reuses heat that would otherwise be lost to the air, reducing carbon emissions(碳排放)while also cutting costs.
Fox Point is operated by Palladia,a group that specializes in providing housing and services to needy people.Palladia received support from Enterprise Community Partners (ECP),which helps build affordable housing by providing support to housing developers.
ECP has created national standards for healthy, environmentally (環境方面) clever and affordable homes which are called the Green Communities Standards. These standards include water keeping, energy saving and the use of environmentally friendly building materials.Meeting the standards increases housing construction costs by 2%,which is rapidly paid back by lower running costs.Even the positioning of a window to get most daylight can help save energy.
Michael Bloomberg,New York’s mayor, plans to create 165,000 affordable housing units for 500,000 New Yorkers.Almost 80% of New York City’s greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings, and 40% of those are caused by housing. So he recently announced that the city’s Department of Housing and Preservation and Development (DHPD),whose duty is to develop and keep the city’s supply of affordable housing, will require all its new projects to follow ECP’s green standards.
Similar measures have been taken by other cities, such as Cleveland and Denver, but New York’s DHPD is the largest city developer of affordable housing in the country.(2010·四川,B)
小題1:What is the purpose of describing the boiler rooms in the first paragraph?
A.To explain the measures the city takes to care for poor people.
B.To suggest that affordable housing is possible in all areas.
C.To show how the environmentfriendly building works.
D.To compare old and new boiler rooms.
小題2:What is an advantage of the buildings meeting the Green Communities Standards?

小題3:It can be learned from the text that________.
A.New York City is seriously polluted
B.people’s daily life causes many carbon emissions in New York City
C.a great number of people in New York City don’t have houses to live in

Three Boys and a Dad
Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother.Expecting a whole day to relax,he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in months.“This will be like a walk in the park,”he’d told his wife.“I’ll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom.”
Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike,Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.”When food had not appeared within thirty seconds,Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum.Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(節拍).Mike chanted “Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background.Brad realised his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.
Life became worse after breakfast.Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head.Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants.Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes.Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes.Brad knew the talk show had already started.
By ten o’clock, things were out of control.Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter.Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils.Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands.Brad realised that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible.
At exactly 11∶17,Brad called the daycare centre(日托所).“I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes?”The answer was obviously “yes” because Brad was smiling.(2012·陜西,B)

I’ve always known my kids use digital communications gear (裝置) a lot.But my cellphone bill last month really grabbed my attention. My son had come up to nearly 2,000 incoming text messages, and had sent nearly as many.Of course,he was out of school for the summer and communicating more with friends from a distance.Nevertheless,he found time to hold down a summer job and complete a college course in between all that typing with his thumb.
I was even more surprised to learn that my son is normal.“Teenagers with cellphones each send and receive 2,272 text messages a month on average,” Nielsen Mobile says.
Some experts regret that all that  keyboard jabber is making our kids stupid, unable to read nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, gestures, posture and other silent signals of mood and attitude.Unlike phones, text messaging doesn’t even allow transmission of tone of voice or pauses, says Mark Bauerlein, author of a book called The Dumbest Generation:How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future.
Beyond that, though,I’m not sure I see as much harm as critics of this trend.I’ve posted before on how I initially tried to control my kids’ texting. But over time,I have seen my son suffer no apparent ill effects, and he gains a big benefit,of easy, continuing contact with others.
I don’t think texting make kids stupid. It may make them annoying, when they try to text and talk to you at the same time. And it may make them distracted, when buzzing text messages interrupt efforts to noodle out a math problem or finish reading for school.
But I don’t see texting harming teens’ability to communicate. My son is as accustomed to nonverbal cues as any older members of our family.I have found him more engaged and easier to communicate with from a great distance, because he is constantly available via text message and responds with faithfulness and speed.

While learning the science lessons,I used to get a doubt—why ear, nose, tongue and eyes should be called as special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings.Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity.Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food.Isn’t it good for a sound nap after a stomachfull meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a meal, but the hearing pitch(強度) does change after a heavy meal.
We usually give credit of the taste to our tongue, but do you know that unless saliva(唾液) dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eaten.Taste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds present on the tongue.Try_to_dry_off_your_tongue_and_mouth_with_a_tissue_paper_and_then_taste_something.
Women are much better smellers than men. They are born with this characteristic ability and can correctly pinpoint the exact fragrance of the sample. We all can store almost 50,000 different scents(氣味),which are strongly tied to the memories.
Pupils(瞳孔) do not respond to light alone, but to the slightest bit of noise around too. Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a much delicate job do prefer to have a soundfree environment.Even a small noise can dilate(擴大) their pupils, change the focus and blur(使模糊) their vision. If you do not wear glasses or contact lens due to having a 6/6 vision, you are just among the one third of the human population. It is now statistically proved that only one third of the population has perfect vision, rest all are either wearing glasses or are trying to read with a compromised vision.
Each and every one of us has a particular or individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us,except for the identical twins. This smell is very subtle(微妙的) yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this scent that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around. Many of us can pinpoint the smell of our significant friends and colleagues.A significant part of this phenomenon is guided by genetics but it is also modified by the environment, diet and personal hygiene. This all together creates the unique chemistry that is individualistic for each person.
小題1:We can learn from Paragraph 1 that ________.
A.after a full meal our hearing is as good as before
B.all sensory organs are connected and can be exchanged
C.sensory organs’ functions can never be changed for their particular character
D.we feel and learn about the world around us through our eyes, ears, nose and tongue
小題2:What is the text mainly about?
A.The functions of sensory organs.
B.The connectivity of sensory organs.
C.A newborn’s senses of the sensory organs.
D.The differences of senses between women and men.
小題3:What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A.Our tongues can’t be dried while eating something.
B.If your tongue is dried without any saliva on it,it will not work.
C.A tissue paper is the only thing that can be used to dry our tongues.
D.If your tongue is dried with a tissue paper,it may work as well as before.

Teenagers at one German school are learning how to achieve happiness alongside other traditional subjects such as math and languages.
The class sit in a circle with their eyes shut and they count from one to ten: someone starts, the next voice comes from the far right, a third from the other side.
The aim of the game is to listen for an opportunity to shout out the number without clashing (沖突) with another voice or leaving a pause. On the first try, most of the young Germans try to be first, while a few are too shy to join in, but by the fifth time round, they develop a rhythm. The message: give other people space but also confidently claim your own. This is a requirement for social well-being.
The Willy Hellpach School in Heidelberg is the first in the nation to develop a happiness course. It is intended for students preparing for university entrance exams.
"The course isn't there to make you happy," Ernst Fritz -Schubert, the school principal, warned pupils, "but rather to help you discover the ways to become happy."
Cooking a meal together is one of the class exercises. Improving body language under the guidance of two professional actresses is another.
The course is taught for three periods a week. Despite the happy subject, the pupils themselves insist it is no laughing matter.
"In the first period, we had to each say something positive about another member of the class and about ourselves. No laughing at people." said Fanny, 17.
Research by the school shows it is not the first to start happiness classes: they also exist at some U. S. universities, mainly based on positive thinking, using findings from studies of depression.

When Armida Armato’s daughter, Alexia, came home from school one day last year keen to go on a school trip to Ecuador, she wasn’t too sure how to feel. She was happy that her daughter could experience something she never did as a teen but was fearful of letting her travel to such a remote part of the world.
Alexia was 16 at the time, a student at Westwood High School. The school sponsored a humanitarian trip for 26 students and two teachers to spend 18 days living in a mountain village to build a one-room school. Even though Armato trusted her daughter, the other students and the teachers, she was worried about the side effects from the travel vaccines, possible accidents, and medical care.
Now that Alexia was home, Armato said she saw her daughter’s new maturity, greater confidence and independence. “This is the best thing I ever did,” Alexia said. “The experience was so eye-opening and life-changing. You’re with people who are not as lucky as you are. They live in very poor conditions but they’re so happy and outgoing. You say, ‘My God. I’m taking everything for granted back home.’”
She said they built a one-room school from scratch with no mechanical cement mixers. They used their hands, shovels and basic tools. She and another student lived with a local family in a small village about eight hours outside the capital, Quito. Despite the initial strangeness and knowing only basic Spanish, she said they grew very close and felt like a family.
Every year, groups of students at Montreal High School like Alexia pack their bags and fly off with classmates and teachers to developing countries where they volunteer for a variety of projects.
“Armato’s worries are very common among parents,” says Bill Nevin, a teacher at St. George’s High School. He organizes a humanitarian rip to India to the Sheela Bal Bhavan orphanage and says the three biggest fears families have are health, security and contact.

After record increase in over 40 countries, Universal Robots’ lightweight robotic arms are now making their US debut (首次露面) at this year’s International Manufacturing Trade Show (IMTS) in Chicago.
The UR5 robotic arm made by Universal Robots has been announced officially “The world’s most innovative (創新的) robot” by The International Federation of Robotics and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Robotics and Automation Society. The US audience will now see the award-winning robot — along with its big brother UR10 — for the first time.
The UR5 and UR10 robotic arms are aimed at small-sized companies that thought robots were too expensive and hard to operate in existing production. The robotic arms are easily moved around the production area and present a simple user interface (界面) which lets workers quickly operate them.
Esben Ostergaard, founder and CTO (Chief Technical Officer) at Universal Robots, explains how the robots were designed to be as user?friendly as possible:
“We decided to make programming easy by developing a user interface worked together with a “teaching function” allowing the user to simply took hold of the robot arm and show it how a movement should be done. The robot can work in any production process very quickly. Our experience shows this is generally done in a few hours.”
The robots weigh as little as 40 pounds, making it possible for them to be moved around the production area to do different tasks. The UR5 can handle a load of up to 5 kilos (11 pounds), the UR10, 10 kilos (22 pounds). As soon as a worker touches the robot arm and uses a force of at least 150 Newton, the robot arm will automatically stop operating.

When your parents advise you to “get an education” in order to raise your income, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to provide manpower(人力資源) for your society, but not so much that you prove an embarrassment to your society.
Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you will be occupationally dead unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison, and you can successfully dropout in grade school.
Get a college degree, if possible. With a B. A., you are on the launching pad. But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master’s degree, make sure it is an M.B.A., and the famous law of diminishing(逐漸減少的) returns begins to take effect.
Do you know, for instance, that long-haul truck drivers earn more per year than full professors? Yes, the average salary for those truckers was $24000 while the full professors managed to earn just $23030.
A doctorate is the highest degree you can get. Except for a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial purposes, if you pursue such a degree in any other field, you will face a future which is not bright. There are more doctors unemployed or underemployed in this country than any other part of the world.
If you become a doctor in English or history or anthropology or political science or languages or—worst of all—in philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands. Not for our needs, mind you, but for our demands.
Thousands of doctors are selling shoes, driving cars, waiting on table, and endlessly filling out applications month after month. They may also take a job in some high school or backwater(閉塞) college that pays much less than the doorkeeper earns.
You can equate the level of income with the level of education only so far. Far enough, that is, to make you useful to the gross national product, but not so far that nobody can turn much of a profit on you.
小題1:According to the writer, what the society expects of education is to turn out people who ______.
A.will not be a disgrace to society
B.will become loyal citizens
C.can take care of themselves
D.can meet the nation’s demand as a source of manpower
小題2:Many doctors are out of job because ______.
A.they are improperly educated
B.they are of little commercial value to their society
C.there are fewer jobs in high schools
D.they prefer easier jobs that make more money
小題3:The nation is only interested in people ______.
A.with diplomas
B.who specialize in physics and chemistry
C.who are valuable to the gross national product
D.who receive little education
小題4:Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Bernard Shaw didn’t finish high school, nor did Edison.
B.One must think carefully before pursuing a master’s degree.
C.The higher your education level, the more money you will earn.
D.If you are too well-educated, you’ll be overeducated for society’s demands.
小題5:The writer sees education as ______.
A.a means of providing job security and financial security and a means of meeting a country’s demands for technical workers
B.a way to broaden one’s horizons
C.more important than finding a job
D.an opportunity that everyone should have
