"But Ijust paid 1.69 for this bottle of wine last week. How is it that the price is 2.25?"
There are at least three things going on that have caused the price of wine to rise. All haveto do with the supply and demand factors of economics.
The first factor is that people are drinking more wine than ever before. This demand formore wine has increased wine sales in America at the rate of 15 percent a year.
The second factor is that the supply of wine has stayed relatively the same, which meansthat the same number of bottles is produced each year.Wine producers are trying to open upnew land to grow more grapes. But in at least three wine producing areas of the world-France,Germany, and California --- new vineyards(葡萄園)will not be useable in the near future.Wines are produced in other countries, such as Italy, Spain, and Portugal, as well as Argentine,Australia, Austria, and Chile. And these wines will be seen more often on the American market. But none of these countries will be able to fill the good wines.
The third factor is that costs of wine production are soaring. The workers who make wineare asking for more money, and the machinery needed to press the grapes is becoming moreexpensive.
When the demand for something is greater than the supply, prices go up.When productioncosts, meaning the price of labor and machinery rise, the producer adds this increase to theprice of the wine. For these reasons, that bottle of wine now costs 2.25 instead of 1.69.

Driving to a friend's house on a recent evening, I was attracted by the sight of the full moon rising just above my friend’s rooftops. I stopped to watch it for a few moments, thinking about what a pity it was that most city people? Myself included? Usually miss sights like this because we spend most of our lives indoors.
My friend had also seen it. He grew up living in a forest in Europe, and the moon meant a lot to him then. It had touched much of his life.
I know the feeling. Last December I took my seven-year-old daughter to the mountainous jungle of northern India with some friends. We stayed in a forest rest-house with no electricity or running hot water. Our group had campfires(篝火) outside every night, and indoors when it was too cold outside. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip. Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I have ever known, a bottomless well of silence. And above me was the full moon, which struck me deeply.
Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fibre-glass. We have televisions, cell phones, pagers, electricity, heaters and ovens and air-conditioners, cars, computers.
Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of it spent indoors, I thought: before long, I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grow vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains. I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a cold silent night and touch the moon.

Geena David knew she wanted to be a movie star when she was very young. She was not sure what gave her the idea, but she wanted to look like a movie star.“I have a lot of pictures from my childhood of me wearing sunglasses,”she says.“I used to wear them to watch TV.”
Early movie actors started wearing sunglasses not because they looked good, but because their eyes hurt. The lights used on movie sets were extremely bright and could cause a painful problem known as “Klieg eyes”.It was named after the Klieg brothers who invented the lights.Actors wore sunglasses to give their eyes a rest. But when movie stars began wearing their sunglasses in public, they quickly became a must.

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

There is, for many of us, a moment in life when we make a choice that changes us forever. This moment marks a turning point, when we realize that the life we're living is not a mirror of who we really are.
For some, the moment comes as a result of something dramatic: the sudden loss of a job, or the death of a loved one. For others, they have to deal with difficult situations, such as financial hardship. In these challenging times, it's more critical(關鍵時刻的) than ever for us to seize the possibility of positive change. As I travel and talk to people about their lives, I often see a distant, vacant look in their eyes -- a look that says “I’m so busy trying to survive my life that no soul left to live it”.
As a result, we end up feeling lonely. Yet we keep on going the way we've been going. We tolerate high levels of stress at work, take important relationships for granted, or put our health needs on hold. We get so caught up in the details of living that our busyness becomes an excuse from the inner voice that begs us to listen. When you finally pay attention to that little voice and begin to make even small changes, you will slowly improve yourself.
To start positive change, you need the power of your mind. I've come up with a five-step strategy that will help you. You will be able to identify what you want and then go after it. It's easier than you might think.
1. Reset your happiness set point. Don't limit yourself! When I decided that I wanted more control over my life, I set goals in physical, emotional, financial, professional, material, and play. I challenged myself to consider every possible choice. Imagine things you've never believed you could achieve. Don't let your past determine your future.
2. Trust your courage. Too often, when you're first learning to take control of your life, you doubt yourself. It's important to develop a strong connection with your inner guidance system. I've heard many stories about the persistent voice inside your head.
3. Take action. Once you have set goals, adjusted your beliefs, and got ready, you can start making things happen. Again, turn to those people you respect -- the ones achieving what you desire -- for support and guidance. They will both inspire you and give you practical advice on what steps you need to take.
4. Have faith. Believe that the positive energy of grace will support your efforts to improve your life. When you've done all you can, let go and trust that the right result will occur. When we have faith, we give up the need to be in control, and we set ourselves up to actually enjoy the process of change.
5. Be patient. This can be the toughest step. It's not easy to trust that your life will improve in a best way. Remind yourself of the benefits of patience. In my experience, those life changes are always worth the wait.
小題1:What does the author intend to say in the second paragraph?
A.The start of some turning points in one’s life is caused by crisis.
B.Loss of a job or the death of a loved one are all dramatic things.
C.No one can live a life without any turning points.
D.No one can predict his future of being good or not.
小題2:In the author’s opinion, we should ______________.
A.adjust our beliefs from time to timeB.always control ourselves for anything
C.keep on going the way we are goingD.seize the challenging times to live an active life
小題3:The author suggests that when setting your happiness set points, you should _______.
A.know the limitation of your set pointB.build self-confidence without doubt
C.limit your goals in different waysD.consider every possible choice with care
小題4:Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.When you've done all you can, you may believe that the right result will occur.
B.When you set goals, and take action, it is possible to make things happen.
C.When you first learn to take charge of your life, you will always doubt yourself.
D.If things do not happen in a way that is best, patience is always worth the wait.

When you are at odds with someone close to you, the One-Minute Drill can show you how to express your feelings effectively – and how to listen more skillfully. All it requires is two individuals who are committed to improving their relationship.
Set aside at least ten minutes, and then sit facing each other. Decide who will be the Talker and who will be the Listener. It makes no difference, because later you will change roles.
How to perform the One-Minute Drill
For approximately 30 seconds, the Talker can say anything he or she wants. Your job will be to express your thoughts and feelings. You can discuss problems you've had a hard time talking about. Remember to limit yourself to about 30 seconds. When the Talker finishes, the Listener will summarize what the Talker just said, as well as how the Talker was feeling inside, as accurately as possible.
The Talker now gives the Listener a grade between 0 and 100 per cent to indicate how accurate the summary was. If the rating is 95 per cent or more, you can change roles; the new Talker can continue with the same topic or move on to something entirely new.
However, if the grade is below 95 per cent, the Talker should point out what the Listener missed or got wrong, and repeat the process until the overall rating is 95 per cent or more. Then you can change roles and repeat the exercise for as long as you both like.
How it works
Thirty seconds of emotionally charged information is sufficiently challenging for anyone. Express your feelings in strong, clear, direct language, but as your partner will be listening attentively, you won't need to shout, exaggerate or put your partner down.
The Listener should sit and listen respectfully without interrupting. Look into your partner's eyes, but avoid using negative body language. If you like, take a few notes.
So the Talker might say: "When I come home from work, I feel tired and I need some quiet time. But you tell me I'm supposed to spend time with the kids. This makes me feel frustrated. I work hard and I'm exhausted at the end of the day. I feel like I deserve a little time to relax, not listen to more demands."
In response, the Listener might summarize like this: "You just told me that you feel exhausted when you come home at night because you've been working hard all day. When I tell you I want you to spend time with the kids, you feel frustrated and ticked off because you're tired and you need time to relax. You see me as very demanding, and you're probably feeling like I don't appreciate you."
The first time you attempt the One-Minute Drill, you may get a low score. Don't worry, because you'll get up to speed quickly. Once you've tried this exercise a few times, you'll find that you can nearly always get ratings of 95 per cent or better on the first or second try.
小題1: Who is the One-Minute Drill intended for?
A.Those who are to act some roles in a certain play for the first time in their life.
B.Those who are preparing for the interview in order to make a good first impression.
C.Those who have difficulty communicating with their colleagues or family members.
D.Those who have troubled relationships with their friends or family members and try to improve them.
小題2:Which of the following is NOT true?
A.In the One-Minute Drill, the Talker and the Listener change roles in the process.
B.The Talker should talk about his / her thoughts and feelings in a brief way.
C.The Listener should listen carefully, respectfully and later summarize accurately.
D.After the Talker finishes talking, the Listener is to give him / her a grade.
