Being probably the most complex female character in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Ophelia deserves special attention because she is treated as a substitute for Stowe’s intended audience. Secondhand smoke clearly kills people and the only way to control it is to ban smoking in all workplaces, US Surgeon-General Dr Richard Carmona said.
