The common cold is the world's most widespread illness, which is a plague that man receives.

The most widespread mistake of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated Arctic regions, explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contract again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.

During the First World War, soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches, cold and wet, seldom caught colds.

In the Second World War, prisoners at Auschwitz concentration camp, naked and starved, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds.

At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in a room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.

If then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in winter? Despite the most hard research, no one has yet found out the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and that makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain-killers such as aspirin, but all that they do is to relieve the symptoms.

49. The writer offered ___ examples to support his argument.

A. 4 B. 5 C. 6 D. 3

50. Arctic explorers may catch colds when___.

A. they are working in the isolated Arctic regions

B. they are writing reports in terribly cold weather

C. they are free from work in the isolated Arctic regions

D. they are coming into touch again with the outside world

51. Volunteers taking part in the experiments in the Common Cold Research Unit___.

A. suffered a lot B. never caught colds

C. often caught colds D. became very strong

When speaking of mathematics in East Asia, it is necessary to describe its development in China, Korea, and Japan as a whole. Mathematicians from these countries can be considered as part of the same mathematical community. Besides, these scholars usually wrote with Chinese characters and thus could read one another's texts.

The common basis for the development of mathematics in East Asia was books that were written in China from the 1st through the 13th century, to which most of the later works refer. For this period, the two main sources, the references found in the texts and those given in a list of books arranged for the dynastic annals(朝代編年史)indicate that there are many lacunae(空白) in the books that have existed. The oldest existing works survived because they became official books.

In the 17th century few ancient Chinese mathematical works were known, and those that were known were not fully understood. Afterwards, as Chinese mathematicians began to realize European achievements, they began to look for such works throughout the country. Editions of the texts they found began to appear at the end of the 18th century and have become the main sources for the history of Chinese mathematics. Discoveries of new sources are now rare。contrary to the situation for Arabic mathematics, for example. However, in the 20th century a mathematical book was discovered in a grave dating from the 2nd or 3rd century, which pushed back by more than three centuries what was previously known about the subject.

1.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

[ ]

A.Ancient China, Korea and Japan shared the same tradition in mathematical study.

B.Many Chinese, Korean and Japanese mathematicians used to work in the same community.

C.The ancient Chinese, Korean and Japanese mathematicians led the world in the field of mathematics.

D.Ancient Korean and Japanese mathematicians learned mathematics from their Chinese teachers.

2.The source of mathematics is traced back to books written _____.

[ ]

A.in China

B.in Japan

C.in Korea

D.in all the three countries

3.When Chinese mathematicians came to know European mathematics, they _____.

[ ]

A.found the Chinese mathematics history was longer than they had known

B.found ancient Chinese mathematics better than western mathematics

C.began to search for Chinese mathematics achievements in history literature

D.began to write books in mathematics in Chinese

4.The best title for the passage is _____.

[ ]

A.Mathematics in China

B.Mathematies in Ancient China

C.Mathematics in Ancient Asia

D.The Origin of Mathematics

Scratchy throats, stuffy noses and body aches all spell misery, but being able to tell if the cause is a cold or flu may make a difference in how long the misery lasts. The American Lung Association (ALA) has issued new guidelines on fighting colds and the flu, and one of the keys is being able to quickly tell the two apart. That’s because the prescription (處方) drugs available for the flu need to be taken soon after the illness sets in. As for colds, the sooner a person starts taking over-the-counter medicine, the sooner relief will come.

The common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses. More than 200 viruses can cause cold symptoms, while the flu is caused by three viruses—virus A, B and C. There is no cure for either illness, but the flu can be prevented by the flu vaccine (疫苗), which is, for most people, the best way to fight the flu. But if the flu does strike, quick action can help. Although the flu and common colds have many similarities, there are some obvious signs to look for. Cold symptoms such as runny noses and scratchy throats typically develop gradually, and adults and teens often do not get a fever. On the other hand, fever is one of the characteristic features of the flu for all ages. And in general, flu symptoms including fever and chills, sore throats and body aches come on suddenly and are more severe than cold symptoms.

The ALA notes that it may be particularly difficult to tell when infants and preschool-aged children have the flu. It advises parents to call the doctor if their small children have flu-like symptoms. Both cold and flu symptoms can be eased with over-the-counter medications as well. However, children and teens with a cold or flu should not take aspirin for pain relief because of the risk of Reye syndrome (綜合癥),a rare but serious condition of the liver and central nervous system. There is, of course, no vaccine for the common cold. But frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact with people who have colds can reduce the likelihood of catching one.

1.According to the passage, knowing the cause of the misery will help ________.

  A. shorten the duration(length of time) of the illness

  B. the patient buy medicine over the counter

  C. the patient obtain cheaper prescription drugs

  D. prevent people from catching colds and the flu

2.We can learn from the passage that ________.

  A. one doesn’t need to take any medicine if he has a cold or the flu

  B. aspirin should not be included in over-the-counter medicine for the flu

  C. delayed treatment of the flu will harm the liver and central nervous system

  D. over-the-counter drugs can be taken to ease the misery caused by a cold or the flu

3.Which of the following symptoms will distinguish the flu from a cold?

  A. A stuffy nose.                                     B. A high temperature.

  C. A sore throat.                                     D. A dry cough.

4.If children have flu-like symptoms, their parents ________.

  A. are advised not to give them aspirin

  B. should watch out for signs of Reye syndrome

  C. are encouraged to take them to hospital for vaccine

  D. should prevent them from mixing with people running a fever
