閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項中選出最佳選項。

For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming home to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some may hide. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They are called latchkey children. They’re children who look after themselves while their parents work. And their bad condition has become a subject of concern.

Lynette Long was once the headmaster of an elementary school. She said, “We had a school rule against wearing jewelry. A lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys attached. I was constantly telling them to put them inside shirts. There were so many keys, it never came to my mind what they meant.” Slowly, she learned they were house keys.

She and her husband began talking to the children who had them. They learned of the impact(影響) working couples and single parents were having on their children. Fear is the biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in each three latchkey children the Longs talked to reported being scared. Many had nightmares and were worried about their own safety.

The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. It might be in a shower stall, under a bed in a closet. The second is TV. They’ll often play it at high volume. It’s hard to get statistics on latchkey children, the Longs learned. Most parents are slow to admit they leave their children alone.

56. The main idea about “l(fā)atchkey children” is that they _______.

A. are growing in numbers

B. are also found in middle-class neighborhoods

C. watch too much television during the day

D. suffer problems from being left alone

57. The main feeling these children have when they are at home by themselves is _______.

A. tiredness       B. freedom      C. loneliness       D. fear

58. We may draw a conclusion that _______.

A. latchkey children enjoy having such a large amount of time alone

B. latchkey children try to hide their feeling

C. latchkey children often watch TV with their parents

D. it’s difficult to find out how many latchkey children there are

The Kindle is coming! The Kindle is coming!

Amazon. corn will start selling its wireless electronic reader the Kindle in 100 countries, including China and most of Europe, from Monday, 19 October. The Kindle will cost $279 (189) globally. Amazon says 200,000 English-language books as well as over 85 newspapers and magazines will be available on the international device (設(shè)備).

The Kindle is popular with travellers who like the convenience of downloads and don't like carrying heavy books. Amazon says that for every 100 customers who buy a book in the US, some 48 now buy it as an e-book.

"Our vision for Kindle is every book ever printed, in print or out of print, in every language, all available within 60 seconds," Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos told the Irish Times, one of the newspapers that will be available on the device. The international Kindle version will store as many as 1,500 books, read PDF files and allow users to make annotations.

Forrester Research predicts that three million e-reader devices will be sold in the US this year, up from an earlier estimate of two million. That is expected to double next year. The research group says that Amazon will take a 60 per cent market share this year, followed by Sony’s Reader at 35 per cent. In July, Credit Suisse estimated that Amazon's revenues from the Kindle could reach $420 million this year, representing 8.4 per cent of the company's total income.

There are rumours that Amazon's next step will be to turn the Kindle into a device for tasks like e-mailing, texting and surfing the Web, thus competing with a tablet computer reportedly being developed by Apple.

Eight – year – old Jesse Abrogate was playing in the sea late one evening in July 2001 when a 7 – foot bull shark attacked him and tore off his arm. Jesse’s uncle jumped into the sea and dragged the boy to shore. The boy was not breathing. His aunt gave him mouth – to – mouth resuscitation (人工呼吸) while his uncle rang the emergency services. Pretty soon, a helicopter arrived and flew the boy to hospital. It was a much quicker journey than the journey by road.
Jesse’s uncle, Vance Folsenzier, ran back into to the sea and found the shark that had attacked his nephew. He picked the shark up and threw it onto the beach. A coastguard shot the fish four times and although this did not kill it, the shark’s jaws relaxed so that they could open them, and reach down into its stomach, and pull out the boy’s arm.
At the Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Dr Ian Rogers spent eleven hours reattaching Jesse’s arm. “It was a complicated operation,” he said, “but we were lucky. If the arm hadn’t been recovered in time, we wouldn’t have been able to do the operation at all. What I mean is that if they hadn’t found the shark, well then we wouldn’t have had a chance.’
According to local park ranger Jack Tomosvic, shark attacks are not that common. “Jesse was just unlucky,” he says, “evening is the shark’s feeding time. And Jesse was in area without lifeguards. This would never have happened if he had been in area where swimming is allowed.’
When reporters asked Jesse’s uncle how he had had the courage to fight a shark, he replied, “I was mad and you do some strange things when you’re mad.”
1.What was the boy doing when the accident happened?
A.Feeding a hungry shark.     B.Jumping into the rough sea.
C.Dragging a boy to the shore.   D.Swimming in a dangerous area.
2.In which way did the boy’s uncle help with the operation?
A.By finding his lost arm.     B.By shooting the fish.
C.By flying him to hospital.          D.By blowing into his mouth.
3.How was his uncle in time of danger?
A.Careful.    B.Brave.      C.Optimistic.       D.Patient.

請認(rèn)真閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

Few people realize that there is a big difference between formal English and informal English. Formal English is used for most writing, and often in public speaking and formal meetings. It pays close attention to grammar rules, because if we use proper grammar, our meaning is often more precise. Also, on important occasions, we do not want to appear uneducated or to offend (冒犯) others, so we are very careful about how we speak. Informal English is used in speaking or writing to our friends and family. It often does not pay such close attention to grammar rules, because when we speak or write to them, we want our words to flow quickly. Also, with our friends and family, we are usually not so worried about appearing uneducated or about offending them by how we write or speak.

A big difference between formal and informal English is the use of contractions. A contraction is where we make a word shorter or where we put two words together and take away some of the letters. For example, instead of saying “do not”, many people say “don’t”. Using contractions in our speech is fine because it sounds natural, especially when we speak to our friends. In formal writing, however, contractions are usually avoided because people might think that you have made a mistake, or that you do not know proper grammar.

In the same way we might make words shorter, in informal English we often make sentences shorter as well. For example, if someone asks you your name, you will likely answer with one word: your first name. However, in formal English we usually use complete sentences. For example, we might write “My name is John”. In most speaking, we may not need to use every word in a sentence because the person we are speaking to will probably still understand us. In most writing, however, every word in a sentence must be written out in order to make sure that we can be understood.

56. When we use formal English, _______.

         A. we will offend others

B. we will appear educated on important occasions

         C. we needn’t pay more attention to grammar rules

         D. we can express ourselves more directly and more quickly

57. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “precise”?

         A. simple                    B. direct                     C. puzzling                 D. clear

58. Contractions are best used when we are _______.

         A. speaking at a formal meeting                        B. speaking to our friends

         C. speaking in public                                              D. writing an application (申請) letter

59. In speaking, we do not always use complete sentences because ______.

         A. we do not care about grammar                    B. we do not want to sound stupid

         C. we can still be understood                              D. we don’t want to waste time

Many people have described television as a passive activity that is harmful to children’s

education. However, there are good and bad ways to watch television.Parents who are interested in using television as a learning tool can actually turn time in front of TV into an educational chance.

Probably the most familiar educational way to use television is to simply watch educational programs. In particular, this means selecting channels and programs specially designed for educational purposes.Along with traditional educational shows for children on public broadcasting channels, cable television now offers kids and adults a wide variety of educational programs, with everything from nature shows to historical events in different countries.

Captioning, such as “closed captioning” for hearing disabled viewers provides another way for parents to exploit(開發(fā)) the educational possibilities of television. One study showed that children who watched captioned TV got great improvement in their vocabulary and oral reading ability. In addition, parents can make any show a learning class by watching television together with children.By actively joining children in the programs that they are watching, parents can help with the development of such skills as predicting  and summarizing. In order to develop predicting skills, parents and children could first refer to a program’s description in a viewing guide. After reading the program description and guessing what might happen in the program, parents and children could watch together to see which predictions were correct. And to practice summarizing, after watching a program, parents can turn off the TV and ask what the story was about. This kind of activity helps children develop thinking skills such as arranging events in an order and memorizing information.

Although there will still be plenty of times when children watch TV simply for passive enjoyment, parents can help make at least part of their children’s viewing time a more productive activity.Used intelligently by exploiting the learning chances available through various programs, television can play an instructive role in children’s education.

56.Which activity is NOT suggested in the passage?

A.Predicting and summarizing TV shows  B.Watching captions on TV.

C.Enjoying films about nature.              D.Watching shows for homework.

57.We can learn from the last paragraph that ______.

A.not every minute when a child watches television must be educational

B.children should not use television for passive enjoyment

C.some children prefer reading to watching television

D.television offers more learning chances than school

58.Which of the following questions is the major one discussed in the passage?

A.What makes television more interesting than books?

B.Why should schools put television into classrooms?

C.How can parents use television as a teaching tool?

D.Which program can actually make kids smarter?

第三部分:閱讀理解(每小題2分,滿分30分)

As computers become all the more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(筆畫)of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.

Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.

All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.

It's faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that's why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.

“When I'm writing with a pen, I find I often can't remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”

“I'm not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”

Many students don't feel this is something to worry about. Now that it's more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?

Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic (審美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer's emotion. Through one's handwriting, people can get to know one's thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”

To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory (必修的) and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

61. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?

A. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing.

B. To Type or To Hand Write

C. Writing By Computer Will Replace Writing By Hand

D. Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters.

62. The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because _______.

A. they are usually asked to e-mail their Homework and Essays

B. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently

C. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character

D. computers have become a trend and fashion in China.

63. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE of the advantages of handwriting?

A. Handwriting contains the writer's emotion.

B. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting,

C. Handwriting can impress people well and build one’s self-confidence

D. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value.

64. The underlined expression “taking stock in” (Paragraph 4) probably means ______.

A. getting bored with                 B. getting dependent on

C. becoming crazy about              D. getting curious about

65. We can draw the conclusion from the passage that _______.

A. more and more students will give up writing on a computer

B. writing by hand will give way to typing by computer one day

C. more and more students will pay attention to handwriting

D. the typing article better expresses one’s emotion and quality
