Many animal and plant species have become extinct and many more are in critical danger. Finding
ways to protect the earth's wildlife and conserve the natural world they inhabit (居住) is now more important than ever.
     Dodo
The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth's biology. The flightless
Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It lived off fruit fallen from the island's
trees and lived unthreatened until humans arrived in 1505. The easily controlled bird became a source of
food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys
and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.
     Rhinos
The Rhino (犀牛) horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being
hunted in its natural habitat.Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most Rhinos now live in protected
natural parks and reserves (保護(hù)區(qū)). Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the
animals remain under constant threat from poachers(偷獵者).
     The Giant Panda
The future of the World Wildlife Fund's symbolis far from certain. As few as 1,000 remain in the wild.
The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves  to  protect  these  beautiful animals  and  made
poaching  them punishable with 20 years in prison. However, the panda's distinct black and white
patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose (造成) one of
the most serious threats to the animals continued existence.
     Whales
The International Whaling Commission is fighting to ensure the survival of the whale species. Despite
the fact that one-third the world's oceans  have  been  declared  whale sanctuaries (保護(hù)區(qū)),7 out of 13
whale species remain endangered. Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to
just 300. Collisions with ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.
     Tigers
The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is precariously
close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive. Like the Rhino horn, tigers' bones and organs are
sought after for traditional Chinese medicines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins.
1. It implies that________.
 A. the Dodo lacked the ability to protect itself from other animals
B. Sailors to the Island of Mauritius lived mainly on the Dodo
C. the Dodo used to be a strong animal that liked fighting
D. the Dodo, pigs, monkeys and rats were the natives to the Island of Mauritius

A. The Dodo, Rhino and Giant Panda.
B. The Rhino, Whale and the South China tiger.
C. The Rhino, Panda, Whale and Tiger.
D. The Dodo and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers.
3. ________can serve as a cure for certain diseases.
A. The whale's rich oil
B. The panda's black and white patched coat
C. The Rhino horn and tigers' bones and organs
D. The Dodo's delicious meat
4. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. The number of South China tigers has reached crisis point.
B. Many animals are threatened with extinction as a result of human activity.

MEXICO CITY: A jetliner from the beach resort of Cancun was briefly hijacked as it landed in Mexico City on Wednesday. The hijackers released all passengers shortly before federal police stormed the plane, and the crew emerged unharmed moments later.
Police, who did not fire a single shot, led as many as eight handcuffed men away from the airplane, which was isolated at the end of a runway in an area designed for emergencies. The hijackers’ motive was unclear, though Mexican news media initially identified them as Bolivians demanding to speak with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
US, French and Mexican citizens were among the 112 passengers and crew on Aeromexico Flight 576, according to a US official who had been briefed on the situation. The official was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Mexico’s transportation and communications secretary, Juan Molinar, said there was no bomb on the airplane, although some passengers said one of the hijackers held a package that resembled an explosive device, and a bomb squad (拆彈小組) was later seen near the airplane.
He did not immediately identify the hijackers or speculate on their motive.
“Various people who participated in the act have been detained and we are investigating,”Molinar said.
The attorney general’s office said it was opening an investigation into terrorism and kidnapping but did not specify how many people could be charged.
Mexican news media initially reported the hijackers were Bolivian, but Bolivia’s ambassador to Mexico, Jorge Mancilla, said Mexican authorities had no evidence that was the case. Mancilla said sources told him they could be Colombian or Venezuelan. Several passengers told reporters they did not notice a non-Mexican accent.
Passenger Rocio Garcia told the Televisa network that the pilot made an announcement after landing in Mexico City that the airplane was being hijacked. Passengers said the hijackers never communicated with them directly.
“These were scary moments,”she said.
She said she saw one of the hijackers whom she described as a well-dressed, older man.
“He looked fine, like a normal passenger,”she said.
Passenger Daniel Hernandez said he saw a hijacker carrying a Bible.
51.From the first paragraph we can conclude that _________.
A.the hijackers just wanted to play a trick on the police
B.the hijackers didn’t prepare for their action
C.the hijackers surrendered before the police fired
D.the hijackers lost their way at the last moment
52.From what Juan Molinar said we can learn that _________.
A.police were still trying to identify a possible bomb
B.passengers succeeded in stopping the explosion
C.a(chǎn) frightening bomb was found later on the airplane
D.several Mexicans were involved in the hijacking
53.What may be the first step taken when the hijacked plane landed?
A.They gave a sudden attack at the hijackers.
B.They kept the plane away from other planes.
C.They asked the crew to control the hijackers.
D.They abandoned the plane at the end of the runway.

In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with, a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letters. Frankly speaking, I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication.

But a story about online communication changed my mind.

An old man, who suffered a lot from Parkinson's disease, was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name. Living totally alone, he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family. How did he achieve this? He clicked out words on his computer keyboard.

I, therefore, managed to get an e-mail box as soon as the opportunity came. My life changed. E-mail, and all online communication, is something truly different. It has capabilities that few other products can match.

E-mail is convenient. It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection. The slow postal service is no match. If you wouldn't want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager, you might talk with him through e-mail even if you are in the same office.

Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy. But wait. E-mail can be inconvenient. It can waste time and energy. Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your e-mail box filled with 200 unread messages. You could clearly spend half a day clearing junk ads.

Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers. Once we throw ourselves into the machine, we may forget the human touches we once held so dear. I'm sure there's and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter, phone call, and face-to-face meeting even in the world of modem communication.

As I listen to the sound of the modem, I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but, at the same time, I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life.

41. What caused the writer to become interested in e-mail and online communication?

A. The sound of the modem.        B. His own illness.

C. The changing of his life.         D. A sick old man's experience.

42. What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word "junk" in Paragraph 7?

A. Old and useless.                 B. New and useful.

C. Short but valuable.               D. Long but clear.

43. What does the writer think of online communication?

A. It should replace old-fashioned letters completely.

B. It is perfectly and always does good to you.

C. It is extremely useful and convenient, but it may be inconvenient or even harmful.

D. It does more harm than good.

44. How did the sick old man keep in touch with his family members?

A. With the help of his computer.

B. By writing letters with his pen.

C. By making telephones calls.

D. By visiting them regularly.

45. According to the writer, traditional means of communication will never disappear because    .

A. they are convenient and popular though they are slow

B. they help to keep the friendly relationship between people

C. most people cannot keep up with the development of technology

D. modem means of communication does too much harm

Man, a land animal. But he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the
needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the
world. Today, nearly two-thirds of the world's population lives within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources
on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man's needs.
The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is big. Oil and gas explorations
have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the ocean floor ready
to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and
shellfish (貝類(lèi)動(dòng)物) is an ancient skill practised in the past mainly by Oriental people, including people
in China.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm
temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and
waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong,
new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2020 the
problems that prevent us from exploiting (開(kāi)發(fā)) fully the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea
will be largely solved.
1. The major things that the sea offers man are _________.
A. fish and oil

B. the sea, in the broad sense, has not yet been developed
C. the problems preventing our using the resources of the sea have already been solved.
D. by the year 2020, the technology will be good enough to exploit all the sea resources.
3. The underlined words "Oriental people" in the fourth paragraph probably mean _________.
