So long as teachers fail to tell teaching from learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children what children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not simply passing reading on to them. Certainly we shouldn’t have spent endless hours in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible.”
Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient(效率高的) system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity. It can be seen and observed.
Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.
If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest(探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”
When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated(消除). Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of leaning to read by reading. Practice makes perfect, you know.
72.The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that _______.
A.it is one of the most difficult school courses
B.students spend endless hours in reading
C.reading tasks are assigned with little guidance
D.too much time is spent in teaching about reading
73.The underlined word “scrutiny” in the third paragraph probably means “       ”.
A.agreement B.observation      C.control     D.distance

A.children become very active in reading activities
B.teacher and learner roles are thought important
C.teaching helps children in the search for knowledge
D.reading enriches children’s experience

So long as teachers fail to distinguish (differ) between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to plan cleverly the most efficient(有效的) system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to understand the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.

If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the long search for knowledge? Smith has one principle rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them properly, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is got rid of. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the chance to solve the problem of learning to read by learning.

The holiday is upon us. Finally, after months of study, you have some time to yourself. So, why not read a book? Well, some people will say, "Why bother with books? We have the Internet and other media that offer a lot of more colorful entertainment. Books are history!" But don't be fooled. I'm sure there's still a lot to be said for reading.

One clear reason is that a well-chosen book is a wonderful source of vocabulary, so long as you have a good dictionary, of course. Believe me, it's far easier to get new English words and phrases from a book or an article than it is from the TV or the Internet.

But another more important point is that books give you something that modern media simply can not. The average webpage is picture-heavy and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible. While "easy" may be attractive, unfortunately it's of little use for any long-term development of reading skills and the general language level. Because of that, there's still no substitute (替代品) of a book.

But perhaps the best single reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it independently means that it's something you do by and for yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It's hard work, but somewhere down the line, you'll find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure.

How many reasons for reading a book does the author mention in the passage?

       A. Three            B. Two        C. One       D. Four

According to the passage, we basically need a ________ in reading.

       A. television             B. pencil       C. notebook    D. dictionary

In the author's opinion, reading on the Internet may_________.

       A. develop long-term reading skills        B. improve the general language ability

       C. not take the place of reading books      D. be an effective way of reading

The passage is written mainly to _________.

       A. share the pleasure of reading books       B. advise readers to read books

       C. stress the importance of reading online    D. help readers to choose good books

科目:高中英語 來源:2012-2013學年浙江省杭州市西湖高級中學高二12月月考英語試卷(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解

I came to live here where I am now between Wounded Knee Greek and Grass Greek. Others came too, and we made these little grey houses of logs that you see, and they are square, It is a bad way to live, for there can be no power in a square.
You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. In the old days when we were a strong and happy people, all our power came to us from the respectful circle of the nation, and so long as the circle was unbroken, the people were getting rich. The flowering tree was the living center of the circle, and the circle of the four quarters nursed it. The east gave peace and light, the south gave warmth, the west gave rain, and the north with its cold and strong wind gave strength and continuous power. This knowledge came to us from the outer world with our brief. Everything the Power of the World does is done in a circle. The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. Birds make their nests in circle, for theirs are the same as ours. The sun comes forth and goes down again in a circle. The moon does the same, and both are round. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves. Our places were like the nests of birds, and these were always set in a circle, the nation’s circle, a nest of many nests, where the Great Spirit meant for us to nurse our children.
But the Wasichus (Indian word for “white people”) have put us in these square boxes. Our power is gone and we are dying, for the power is not in us any more. You can look at our boys and see how it is with us. Where we were living by the power of the circle in the way we should, boys were men at twelve or thirteen years of age. But now it takes them very much longer to be full - grown.
【小題1】According to the passage, the Indians _______.

A.don’t have modern instruments in their homes
B.refused to move from round places
C.lived in round places, but were forced to live in square houses
D.lived in round places, but then decided to move into square houses
【小題2】Two things being compared in the passage are _______.
A.the Indians’ past and present living conditions
B.the Indians’ past and modern beliefs
C.the Indians’ old and new power
D.people and nature
【小題3】In the second paragraph “the four quarters” refers to _______.
A.the four rooms of the Indian’s house
B.the four kinds of natural power
C.the four seasons
D.the four directions
【小題4】According to the author, once the Indians moved into square houses, _______.
A.they had to move to other houses
B.boys took more time to grow into men
C.they forgot the old way of life
D.everyone was not happy

科目:高中英語 來源:2014屆安徽省高二上學期10月月考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

There is a lot of misunderstanding about studying. Most students have not been taught the principles behind really effective working. Imagine a graph showing the amount a person learns against the number of hours he works in a day. If he doesn’t do any work, he learns nothing (point 0). If he does an hour’s work he learns a certain amount (point 1). If he does two hours’ work he learns about twice as much (point 2). If he does more work he’ll learn still more (point 3). However, if he tries to do twenty-three and a half hours’ work in a day, he will be so tired that he’ll hardly remember anything: what he learns will be very little (point 4). If he did less work he’d learn more (point 5).

Now whatever the exact shape of the graph’s curve(曲線), made by joining these points, it must have a high point. Point “X” is the very maximum anyone can learn in the day. And this represents the optimum(最適度), the best, amount of work to do. It is the best possible compromise between adequate time at the books and fatigue(勞累). Fatigue is an absolutely real thing; one can’t escape it or ignore it. If you try to ignore it and press yourself to work past the optimum, you will only get on this downward slope and achieve less than the best – and then become very tired and lose your power of concentration.

The skill in being a student consists of getting one’s daily study as near the optimum point as possible. I cannot tell you what the optimum is. It differs with the type of work, it differs from person to person, and even in the same person it varies from week to week. You must try to find your own. Every day you study, bear this principle of the optimum in mind. When you feel yourself getting fatigued, if you find yourself reading the same paragraph over and over again and not taking it in, that’s a pretty good sign you’ve reached your highest point for the day and should stop. Most ordinary students find their optimum at five hours a day. Yours may be a little more or a little less – but if you get in five hours’ good work a day, you will be doing well.

Now, what are you doing with yourself when you aren’t working? Before examinations some students do nothing at all except sit in a chair and worry. Here is another misunderstanding. People often think that the mind works like the body; it does not. If one wanted to save one’s physical energy in order to cut the maximum amount of firewood, one would lie flat on a bed and rest when one wasn’t chopping. But the mind cannot rest. Even in sleep you dream, even if you forget your dreams. The mind is always turning. It gets its relaxation only by variety. That is what makes the mind rest.

When you’ve finished your optimum number of hours you must stop. You must not then sit around in the chair thinking about the work – that only tires without any learning. You must get out and do something. It doesn’t matter what – anything so long as you are actively doing something else but work.

1.According to the passage, _______.

A.the longer you study every day, the more you will learn

B.you’ll achieve better learning results if you work three hours every day

C.the less work you do, the better you will learn

D.your work efficiency will decrease once you exceed a certain point of work

2.Fatigue can result in ________.

A.loss of memory

B.a need for relaxation

C.a lot of anxiety

D.loss of concentration

3.The passage tells us that a person’s optimum number of working hours _______.

A.follows a regular pattern with each individual

B.changes regularly from week to week

C.can be partly determined by the sort of work he is doing

D.should be determined before he gets too tired

4.The only way the mind can relax is by ________.

A.doing a variety of things in turn

B.not thinking about anything

C.turning continuously

D.getting oneself in a state of fatigue

5.After you have reached the optimum point of study in a day, you should ________.

A.lie in bed and rest

B.do something else actively

C.do some physical labor

D.stop thinking about your studies
