How do apology languages work? Have you ever tried to apologize, only to be refused? It may be that you were offering a partial apology in a “language”, that was foreign to your listener. The five languages of apology include:
Apology Language 1: “I am sorry.”
List the hurtful effects of your action. Not “I am sorry if …”, but “I am sorry that…”. You might ask if they want to add any points that you have not recognized.
Apology Language 2:“I was wrong.”
Name your mistake and accept fault. Note that it is easier to say “You are right” than “ I am wrong”, but the latter carries more weight.
Apology Language 3: “What can I do to make it right?”
How are you now? How shall I make amends(彌補) to you? How can I restore your confidence that I love you— even though I was so hurtful to you?
Apology Language 4: “I’ll try not to do that again.”
Engage in problem-solving. Don’t make excuses for yourself such as, “Well, my day was just so…” Instead, offer what you will change to prevent yourself from putting them in the same bad situation again.
Apology Language 5: “Will you please forgive me?”
Be patient in seeking forgiveness. They may need some time or greater clarification(澄清) of your input from Apology Languages 1-4.
Finally, your apology may not be accepted, but at least you know that you have been faithful in offering a sincere olive branch(橄欖枝) of peace.

Few of us act alone in the real world. Most things are done with the help or ideas of other people. Group projects are great practice for high school, college, and real life, when you will probably have a job that requires working with others. Right now, group projects can be fun and they often allow you to do a bigger, more interesting project than you could alone. With group work, you can actually learn more in less time.
Group projects also give you a chance to get to know kids you might not otherwise know or talk with. Group projects are also a great way to practice skills you’re not so sure of. For example: working on a deadline, staying organized, or being patient. And if you’re a little nervous talking in front of a group, a joint project can help you become more comfortable with it. Maybe your group will pick you to tell the whole class about your project. If so, you’ll know your whole group is rooting for you!
One of the most important things about group work is talking and meeting together. It’s a good idea to continually check with everybody on their progress to see if anyone needs help. You might think the first step is to figure out who will do what, but actually it’s getting to know another a little. Take a few minutes to chat. Even if you know each other well, it can help to take a minute to think about your skills and share your strengths and weaknesses. The second step is to go over ground rules from your teacher and any that you want to create together as a group.
小題1:Group projects can give you a chance to do the following EXCEPT ________.
A.get to know more friendsB.learn more than you do alone
C.work in an organized wayD.get rid of shyness forever
小題2:The underlined phrase “root for” in the second paragraph means _______.
A.likeB.supportC.offerD.prevent
小題3:What’s the purpose in checking others’ progress?
A.To learn what they will do next.
B.To find good topics to talk with them about.
C.To help them when they need help.
D.To make sure that their work is finished on time.
小題4: According to the passage, we can infer that _______.
A.group members should be your close friends
B.talking with group members should be the first step of group work
C.knowing persons is more important than your projects
D.rules from teachers are more important than working among group members

Still waiting for little green men to make contact? Don't hold your breath.
A leading astronomer has concluded there probably aren't any aliens out there – meaning we are absolutely alone in the universe.
Even though there may be tens of thousands of other distant planets similar in size to Earth, the conditions on them are likely to be too hard to support life-forms such as ET.
Dr Howard Smith, a senior astrophysicist at Harvard University, believes there is very little hope of discovering aliens and, even if we did, it would be almost impossible to make contact.
So far astronomers have discovered a total of 500 planets in distant solar systems – known as extrasolar systems – although they believe billions of others exist.
But Dr Smith points out that many of these planets are either too close to the sun or too far away, meaning their surface temperatures are so bad that they could not support life. Others have unusual orbits which cause vast temperature variations, making it impossible for water to exist – the most important thing for life.
Dr Smith said, "We have found that most other planets and solar systems are wildly different from our own. It means it is highly unlikely there are any planets with intelligent life close enough for us to make contact." But his suggestions contradict other leading scientists who have claimed aliens almost certainly exist.
Only last month Professor Stephen Hawking said the fact that there are billions of galaxies out there made it reasonable to think there were other life-forms in the universe.
Researchers from the University of London have recently suggested that aliens could be living on as many as 40,000 other planets. But Dr Smith said: "Any hope of contact has to be limited to a relatively tiny space around the Earth, reaching maybe 1,250 light years out from our planet, where aliens might be able to pick up our signals or send us their own. But communicating would still take decades or centuries."
小題1:By saying "don’t hold your breath", the author advised the reader not to _____.
A.keep silentB.give upC.expect soD.be afraid
小題2:Dr Smith concludes there probably aren’t any aliens because other planets _____.
A.are too far away from the earth
B.are different from the Earth in size
C.don’t have rich natural resources
D.don’t have a suitable living environment
小題3:Researchers from the University of London are mentioned to show that ______.
A.they have better explanations about aliens
B.aliens certainly exist on many planets
C.they disagree with Dr Smith’s suggestion
D.aliens can pick up signals from the earth
小題4:What’s the main idea of the text?
A.There must be other life forms in the universe.
B.We can communicate with aliens in decades.
C.The chances of finding aliens are slight.
D.Many other planets are quite different from the Earth.

Have you dreamed of traveling to cool places, meeting different people, and maybe picking up a language or two? No matter which country you live in, you can fly over the world’s highest waterfalls in Venezuela, study in France or take dancing lessons in Ghana. Besides the excitement of traveling, there is another reason to study abroad. "Obviously, I learned the language and am now fluent, but perhaps what’s more important was how much I learned about cultures, people, and myself." said Andrew, who studied in France.
Christina studied in Caracas, Venezuela, a city of 10 million people and a huge change from her hometown of 35,000! Christina said she learned how to better speak for herself and her beliefs and to express herself in another language. What could make you more confident than that?
Living away from home can also help you become adapted to the transition (過渡) to college and adulthood. Matthew said that he returned from studying in Australia with confidence, and a real interest in international affairs. "After having gone abroad in high school, I found the transition to college was a breeze — moving 560 miles from home didn’t seem difficult at all after having lived thousands of miles away. "
Speaking of college, improving your language skills might help you get into ideal colleges and even land future jobs. Colleges and employers know that studying abroad provides leadership skills in a world that needs much communication. Most of all, it’s fun! You won’t suffer from the general boredom (單調) while you’re studying in a different learning environment.

The search for life in the universe took a step forward last month with the opening of the Allen Telescope Array(艾倫望遠鏡陣列) in Hat Creek, California. The telescopes were partly made possible by a gift of twenty-five million dollars from Paul Allen. The total cost of the project is already fifty million dollars.
At present, there are 42 radio telescopes working at the Hat Creek observatory. The signals they receive are combined to create what is equal to a single, very large telescope. The telescope will be used to observe objects like exploding stars, black holes and other objects that are predicted but have not yet been observed. Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute says this is the first telescope whose main purpose is to search for signals from intelligent life in space. The SETI Institute is based in Mountain View, California. The organization supports the search for other life forms in the universe.
What makes the Allen Telescope Array unusual is that it can collect and study information from a wide area of the sky. In addition, the 42 telescopes can study information about several projects at the same time. That means studies of large areas of the sky can be made faster than ever before.
Some officials think the Allen Telescope Array will be completed in three more years. 350 individual radio telescopes are planned. The new abilities of the Allen Telescope Array will make searching for stars similar to the sun much faster.
An earlier search by SETI, Project Phoenix, studied about 800 stars to a distance of 240 light years. The project ended in 2004. With the Allen Telescope Array, astronomers hope to gather thousands of times more information in the search for life beyond our planet.
小題1:The main purpose of the Allen Telescope Array is          .
A.to serve for the research of weather predication
B.to prepare for the wars against life from the universe
C.to search for signals from intelligent life in space
D.to observe exploding stars, black holes and other objects
小題2:From this passage we know that         .
A.the 42 radio telescopes at Hat Creek observatory can work together
B.the total cost of the project came from Paul Allen
C.Hat Creek observatory can receive signals from all parts of the worm
D.Hat Creek observatory is operated by an American named Paul Allen
小題3:Which of the following is TRUE according to this passage?
A.The Allen Telescope Array takes much more room than former telescopes.
B.The Allen Telescope Array is still being built at present in the United States.
C.Another 42 radio telescopes will be fixed in the Allen Telescope Array.
D.The SETI Institute is against the search for other life forms in the universes.
小題4:With the help of the Allen Telescope Array,         .
A.astronomers can gather more information than before from other planets
B.humans will have more chances to live on other planets than before
C.humans will be able to find more natural resources on other planets
D.scientists will be able to find more natural resources from other planets

C
All parents know that one of their most important tasks is to prepare their children for an independent life, but any parent can tell you that it’s hard to let go of your children. That balance between keeping your children safe and allowing them to learn from their own mistakes can be heartbreaking. Years of experience means that parents often do know best, but on the other hand the young, being less bound by tradition, are often more creative, more able to find new solutions to old problems. Revolutions are led by the young.
Good teachers make the growth of critical thinking (批判性思維) easier in their students, only to find that this lead to a questioning of the teachers’ basic beliefs. Schools encourage parents to become involved, but are often embarrassed when parents have doubts about some of the educational methods being used. Governments encourage unimportant groups to empower themselves in order to participate fully in the development process. And they are often surprised when the new leaders of these groups turn around and attack the policies or decisions of that same government. However, the rebellious (叛逆的) young and the newly unimportant groups are important in social development. They are not necessarily representatives of those they want to represent in their demands, but their voices must be heard.
Good parents know that just forbidding (禁止) particular behaviors does not prevent their children from finding ways to engage in these forbidden activities. Indeed, sometimes the forbidden fruit is more inviting, just because it is not accepted by authority. Parents must work with their children to educate them on the facts, know as much as possible about the lives of their children, provide a good example, encourage more wholesome activities but also support their children when they don’t follow what is expected of them. But the most important point is that they also need to learn how to let go.
小題1:By saying “Revolutions are led by the young.”, the author indicates that young people are more _______.
A.conventionalB.realisticC.creativeD.heartbreaking
小題2:From the second Paragraph we know ________.
A.teachers’ basic beliefs should be questioned by students
B.schools encourage parents to question their education methods
C.government is satisfied with the new leaders’ attack on the policies
D.the voice of the rebellious young should be heard by the government
小題3:In order to educate children well, parents should _______.
A.forbid particular behaviors in their daily life
B.know them well and set a good example to them
C.educate them with facts and expect much of them
D.know as much as possible about their children
小題4:From the passage we can learn that the author prefers _______.
A.free parenting B.traditional parenting
C.critical parentingD.smart parenting
小題5:What is the best title of the passage?
A.Letting Go – for Children’s Independent Life
B.Parents’ Task – in Children’s Development
C.Way of Growth – for the Young Groups
D.Teaching Methods – for Teachers and Schools

C
So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake everything to do for children that only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.
Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity. It can be seen and observed.
Learning to read, however, involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.
If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索) for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”
When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.
小題1:The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that
________.
A.it is one of the most difficult school courses
B.students spend endless hours in reading
C.reading tasks are assigned with little guidance
D.too much time is spent in teaching about reading
小題2:The teaching of reading will be successful if ________.
A.teachers can improve conditions at school for the students
B.teachers can enable students to develop their own way of reading
C.teachers can devise the most efficient system for reading
D.teachers can make their teaching activities observable
小題3:The underlined word “scrutiny” most probably means “________”.
A.inquiryB.observationC.controlD.suspect
小題4:According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when
________.
A.children become highly motivated
B.teacher and learner roles are interchangeable
C.teaching helps children in the search for knowledge
D.reading enriches children’s experience
小題5: The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A.teachers should do nothing in helping students learn to read
B.teachers should encourage students to read as widely as possible
C.reading ability is something acquired rather than taught
D.reading is more complicated than generally believed

An astronomer is making a case for launching pop singer Justin Bieber into suborbital(亞軌道的)space aboard a private rocket ship. The idea is not to rid the world of the Canadian teenager — he would come back down to Earth eventually, after all — but rather to help jump-start the emerging suborbital spaceflight industry.
It would generate a lot of public interest, which would help commercial spaceflight pick up some much-needed momentum, said Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in Mountain View, California. “If there’s more interest, there are more customers. If there are more customers, there's more technical development. It's a positive feedback loop, and obviously that's good.”
Such missions would return to Earth without completing a full lap around the planet. Instead, the flights would hit the edge of space about 62 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth, experience a few minutes of weightlessness, then re-enter the atmosphere and land back at a spaceport.
None of these firms are ready to fly customers yet, but some are getting close. For instance, Virgin Galactic hopes to begin powered test flights of its SpaceShipTwo vehicle later this year, with commercial operations perhaps beginning in 2013 or 2014. It is SpaceShipTwo that reportedly grabbed the attention of Beyonce and Jay-Z.
Virgin Galactic has collected deposits from nearly 500 customers willing to pay $200,000 for a ride aboard SpaceShipTwo, and both Virgin and XCOR have inked deals to fly scientists and their experiments on research flights. So a suborbital market already exists — but Shostak is thinking about ways to make it grow.
A celebrity launch isn't Shostak’s only idea. Suborbital firms should also promote their activities aggressively via social media, Shostak said, and they should make sure their spaceships are bristling(充滿)with cameras both inside and out, to give the public dramatic views of every mission.
Some observers view commercial suborbital spaceflight as a potentially transformative industry, saying it could serve as a stepping stone to the exploration and exploitation of space on an unprecedented scale. While the industry’s success is far from assured, Shostak offered some reason for optimism: The American public remains keen on space.
小題1:Why may Justin Bieber be sent into suborbital space?
A.To show his bravery and make him a role model for teenagers.
B.To arouse the American public’s interest.
C.To help reform the spaceflight industry.
D.To film an advertisement about space.
小題2:What can we learn about suborbital spaceflight?
A.A trip will return to Earth before finishing a lap.
B.The whole trip will leave passengers weightless.
C.Each trip can take 500 passengers.
D.The trip will be too expensive even for celebrities.
小題3:What can we infer from the text?
A.SpaceShipTwo will be the first to fly.
B.Famous people will be the main passengers in the future.
C.The space trip is still in preparation.
D.Every space trip will be made into a film.
小題4:The last paragraph suggests that _________.
A.space is too mysterious to explore
B.the suborbital market is promising
C.the spaceflight industry is more successful than people think
D.developing the industry is risky
小題5:What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To predict a change in the space market.
B.To discuss a recent launch.
C.To introduce the status of the spaceflight industry.
D.To remove public doubt about the spaceflight industry.
