The world's first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way
to reduce traffic problems. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people. So the officials decided
to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a
convenient way to get to and from work, they would live outside of the city
and this would help reduce the
pressure. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground was born.
The plans for building the Underground met with several problems, but the first track was finally opened in
January,1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the first underground track which was six kilometers long.
About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. They were treated to comfortable seats and pleasant
decorations inside the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels. Fans had to
be put in the tunnel later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding the
Underground did become popular. It carried nine million riders in its first year.
Modem subways have come a long way since the early days of the London Underground.
Today there are more than one hundred underground systems around the world. Shopping malls built in
traffic stations have helped the popularity of subways. Nowadays many stations include underground
department stores, supermarkets and restaurants. Shoppers never have to go above ground!

Our boat floated on between walls of forest. It was too thick for us to get a view of the land we were passing through, though we knew from the map that our river must be passing through chains of hills from time to time. Nowhere did we find a place where we could have landed: although the jungle did not actually spread right down into the river, banks of soft mud prevented us from going ashore. In any case, what would we have gained by landing? The country was full of snakes and other dangerous creatures and the jungle was so thick that one would be able to advance slowly, cutting one's way with knives the whole way. So we stayed in the boat, hoping that when we reached the sea, a friendly fisherman would pick us up and take us to civilization.

As for water, there was a choice. We could drink the muddy river water, or die of thirst. We drank the water. Men who have just escaped from what appeared to be certain death lost all worries about such small things as diseases caused by dirty water. In fact, none of us suffered from any illness as a result.

One day we passed another village, but fortunately nobody saw us. We did not wish to risk being taken prisoners a second time: we might not be so lucky as to escape in a stolen boat again.

2.They couldn't land because_______ .

18【題文】If you travel to a new exhibition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, you will have chances to see some meat-eating plants. Take bladderworts, a kind of such plant, for example. They appear so small and grow in a quiet pond. "But these are the fastest known killers of the plant kingdom, able to capture a small insect in 1/50 of a second using a trap door!"

Once the trap door closes on the victim, the enzymes (酶)similar to those in the human stomach slowly digest the insert. When dinner is over, the plant opens the trap door and is ready to trap again.

Meat-eating plants grow mostly in wet areas with soil that doesn't offer much food nutrition. In such conditions, these amazing plants have developed insect traps to get their nutritional needs over thousands of years. North America has more such plants than any other continents.

Generally speaking, the traps may have attractive appearance to fool the eye, like pitcher plants, which get their name because they look like beautiful pitchers full of nectar (花蜜).

Hair-like growths along the pitcher walls ensure that nothing can escape, and the digestive enzymes can get to work. A tiny insect can be digested in a few hours, but a fly takes a couple of days.

Some of these pitchers are large enough to hold 7.5 liters. Meat-eating plants only eat people in science fiction movies, but sometimes a bird or other small animals will discover that a pitcher plant isn't a good place to get a drink.

9.From Paragraph 1,we learn that bladderworts can__ .

A. kill an insect in a second         B. digest a fly in a few hours

C. be found floating on a quiet lake  D. capture an insect in 1/50 of a second

10.If the trap door of a meat-eating plant is closed, the plant is

A. fooling insects into taking a sip  B. producing nectar

C. tempting insects to come close     D. enjoying a dinner

11.Meat-eating plants can grow in wet and poor soil because they    .

A. can get nutrition from animals     B. don't need much food nutrition

C. can make the most of such conditions    D. have developed digestive enzymes

12.What can be captured by meat-eating plants for food?

A. A child. B. A dog.   C. A little bird.   D. A little fish.

21【題文】

You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on tbe other end has a depressing tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. Are you still in a wonderful mood? Impossible!

Communieating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.

Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win others' pity or respect.

When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the knife of a negative person is put in you, you have the heavy feeling that, all in all, brings you down.

Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a co-worker, or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but this is to lower you to that same negative level and they won't feel ashamed of themselves about that.

Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of others at the start of the day can be attached to you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.

A. their pity for other people        B. their respect for others '

13【題文】“Hurry, Mommy! Let’s go trick-or-treating!” My daughter waited by the door in her pink princess skirt while I prayed in the living room. Usually I liked taking her out on Halloween, but this year I was sad. I was worried about my mother, who was in China on vacation. I got a call that afternoon that she had slipped and fallen on the hard floor of her hotel and broken her leg. She was taken to a hospital in Beijing. Mom was nervous because she couldn’t understand any of the doctors. If only I could do something to help her!

I knew I couldn’t let my worries spoil my daughter’s fun. There was nothing I could do for Mom except pray, I thought. We left the house and went down the block. I was so upset that I hardly took notice of the kids around me. There came the man to whose son I’d once given piano lessons. “Hello there,” I said, greeting him and the boy at his side.

“Hello,” the father answered. “Having fun?”“I’m trying,” I said. “Why, what’s wrong?” he asked. I told him the whole story. “My mother, in China, broke her leg and didn’t understand any of the doctors. And I’m too far away to do anything!” I said.

He raised his eyebrows. “Beijing, you said?” he asked. I nodded. He smiled. “Believe it or not, my sister is a doctor at an English-speaking hospital there. If you want, I’ll make a call right away and we’ll try and get your mom transferred (轉(zhuǎn)移).”

A few days later I sat in the living room with my daughter as she finished the last of the candy. “Mommy, how far away is China?” she asked. “Not as far as I thought,” I said.

14【題文】It is winter in many parts of the world. For some areas, that means snow. Maybe even lots of snow. If you don’t have to drive in it or remove it, snow can be very beautiful. When snow covers everything around you, the world looks like a “winter wonderland”. That is the name of a very popular song about winter. Richard Smith and Felix Bernard wrote the song back in 1934. There are hundreds of recordings of this happy song.

But winter is not always such a beautiful and happy time. It’s cold outside. You try hard to keep warm. The days are darker and shorter. The sun rarely shines. The leaves on the trees are brown. It isn’t surprising that some people are sad in winter. And some people dream about being somewhere else where it’s warm and pretty—like the state of California. The Mamas and the Papas recorded this famous song “California Dreaming”.

During the 1960s, many other famous rock groups released songs about winter. Here is a poetic song by Simon and Garfunkel called “A Hazy Shade of Winter”. They sing about life and hope and possibilities.

In 1968, the group Blood, Sweat and Tears recorded this gentle, sad song about winter. They sing about a lost love and forgotten memories in “Sometimes in Winter”.

In the early 1990s, Tori Amos wrote and recorded the beautiful song called “Winter”. She enjoyed singing about winter when she was a child.

Finally, on a happier note comes this song written and recorded by Fountains of Wayne in 2003. They sing about a snowstorm in a New England town. Nothing unusual there. But instead of being sad or tense about the snow, they write a song about it.

49. The underlined sentence “For some areas, that means snow.” probably means

_____ .

A.In some areas, when it’s winter, it must snow

B.In some areas, it often snows in winter

C.In some areas, it’s important to snow

D.In some areas, people like snow in winter

50. According to the second paragraph, winter is _____ .

A.beautiful and happy

B.happy and warm

C.lovely and hopeful

D.cold and sad

51.Which of the songs can bring us hope of life?

A.Winter Wonderland.

B.California Dreaming.

C.A Hazy Shade of Winter.

D.Sometimes in Winter.

52.What does the passage mainly talk about?

B.Different ideas about winter.

D.Winter is cold but happy.

15【題文】A number of scientific studies have suggested that repeatedly heading a football could increase the risk of developing dementia (癡呆癥) in later life.

In 2002, former England international footballer Jeff Astle died aged 59. A coroner (驗尸官) said that Astle died from a brain disease likely to have been caused by “repeated small damages to the brain” related to heading a heavy leather football.

Dr. Scott Delaney, research director of emergency medicine at McGill University Health Center in Montreal, Canada, has also researched soccer-related head injury and agrees that head-to-head or elbow-to-head blows are the real risk.

In 2007, Delaney carried out a study on footballers aged between 12 and 17 that showed they were half as likely to be concussed (使腦部受到震蕩) wearing headgear (帽) than without.

He said youngsters have a higher risk of head injury than adults because their heads are thinner and less able to absorb shock. To make matters worse, their neck muscles aren’t as well developed and they often lack the correct heading technique that can help throw away the force of the ball.

Delaney recommends that children wear headgear when playing football and says his two eldest children wear head protection playing the sport. But he admits that children can be unwilling to be the first to wear head protection—especially when their football heroes play without it.

While headgear can protect footballers from being concussed during a match, no one knows the long-term effects of repeated “sub-concussive” blows to the head.

Delaney says that while there is indirect evidence that a career in soccer can lead to dementia, no one has yet found a sure link between the two. He says proving a link would mean monitoring hundreds of footballers for three or four decades—and that would take a lot of funding.

57.Which might be the best title of the passage?

A.Playing football may lead to brain damage.

B.Repeated small damages to the brain.

C.Footballers should wear headgear when playing. .

D.Evidence to dementia.

58.According to Delaney’s research, what is the most risky injuries to head?

A.Long-term effects of blows.

B.Wearing head protection.

C.Underdeveloped neck muscles.

D.Head-to-head or elbow-to-head blows.

59. Children are unwilling to wear headgear because they think _____ .

A.headgear is harmful to their heads

Are You Ready for College?

Before you send in your college applications, keep this in mind: it’s not the norm (準則) in every culture for students to go to college right out of high school.

 65.  So if you find yourself applying for college simply because it’s the thing to do after high school, think again. Going to college right after high school may be the norm in your community, but it’s not the norm everywhere and it may not be the best decision for you.

 66.  Yes, higher education often gives young people a big advantage in the working world, but not always. A solid technical or business school application can give you an advantage as well, and if the environment seems like a better one for you than a traditional college campus, this might be your best choice. A lot of people lead successful lives with a high school education and years of work experience.

The price of a college or university education has become a serious burden for young people and their families.   67. In some cases, putting off college for a year or two while a student earns money full time can make sense.   68.

  69.  Almost all students suffer from homesickness, but for some students, the transition may be too much to deal with.

A.Is going to college always the best choice for high school graduates?

B.Spend some time considering your choices before sending in your applications.

C.Besides, it’s quite possible that going to college is not the right choice for you.

D.During this time, the student can take a few inexpensive classes at a community college.

E. So students take massive amounts of loans, which can take decades to pay off.

F. Many young people have other choices, like military service, work experience,

community service or travel.

G. The transition from high school to college is an emotional challenge for almost everybody,

especially if you move away from home.

【答案】

March 22, 2011   Tuesday                                       Sunny

Today is World Water Day.In the morning, we had a class meeting talking about what to do on this special day. Finally, we reached an agreement and immediately began to make preparations for the afternoon’s activities.

At 2:00 p.m., we went to the neighboring community to hand out leaflets, calling on people to save water. Around 3 o’clock, the expert we invited gave an excellent speech on the current water crisis in China. He talked about the drought in the Southwest and the severe shortage of water in our city. The speech had a strong appeal to all the people present, including me.

After the speech, we had a discussion with our neighbors about various ways of saving water in our daily life. I suggested turning off the water tap immediately after using it, and a granny came up with the ideas of reusing the water from kitchen, for example, the water after washing fruits and vegetables can be used to water flowers and so on.

Today, I have had a better understanding of the importance of saving water and really learnt a lot about saving water.

I remember a time I went shopping on my first visit to Macau. Coming from cold and cloudy England, I
was prepared for the sun and dressed in a T-shirt and a short skirt. Not having much chance to enjoy the sun
in the UK and having naturally fair skin, my legs are very white. In the UK this is not a fashionable (時尚的)
look at all. Most women spend every sunny day out in the sun trying to get darker skin. The darker the skin,
the better the look.
As I walked around one shop, two shop assistants didn't take their eyes off me the whole time, talking
quietly in Chinese. I began to feel uncomfortable and asked my friend if we could leave. After we left the shop,
she asked me what was wrong. I was embarrassed that they were talking about my white skin. My friend
laughed."They weren't laughing at you. They were saying how nice your legs are. Many Chinese women want
to have white skin like yours. In fact, there are many beauty products in the shops to make skin whiter and a
lot of money is spent on them."
It just goes to show that we always think what others have is better. The grass is always greener on the
other side
. If the women of the West and East thought the same way, Western women wouldn't spend so
much money on cream that makes skin darker and women from the East wouldn't need to use cream that
makes skin whiter.

2. What kind of skin do most British women prefer to have?

     閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所讀內(nèi)容在文后第76-85小題的空格里填上適當?shù)膯卧~或短語。
注意:每空不超過3個單詞。
The best thing you can say about the roofs of most city buildings is that you don't have to look at them.
That's very good, since an urban landscape viewed from above can be an unlovely thing-block after block
of tarred (鋪有瀝青的) black rooftops, sticky in summer, ugly year-round. Or at least that's the way it used
to be.
But urban roofs are going green. Environmental designers have begun to realize that the tops of buildings
don't have to be wastelands. Indeed, they can be gardens, planted with grasses, flowers and bushes.
A planted roof usually comes in one of two varieties: extensive or intensive. The extensive type is wide
and shallow, with a soil depth of less than 8 inches, able to support smaller plants. The intensive type may
be smaller, but it's relatively deeper and home to larger plants. Whatever the design, green roofs are not so
simple as ordinary gardens. The have multiple layers beneath the soil, including a drainage layer, waterproofing,
structural support, and so on. But this system can do a great deal of good. A recent paper in the journal Bio
Science tells that green roofs can control temperature, contain water and clean the air. And most impressively,
they can cut heat loss from a building by 50%, lower air-conditioning costs by 25%, and reduce the
urban-heated-island effect by 2℃.
Of course, apart from the square feet greened and heat reduced, green roofs are even more valued since
people can gain some psychological comfort simply by having a quiet place to go. as so often happens, what's
good for the planet can also be good for the spirit.

A) 選擇題:閱讀下面的短文,根據(jù)文意從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C 和D)中,選出能回答所提問題或完成所給句子的最佳選項。(Read the following passage which is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the passage.)

Mexic Past and Present

Hundreds of years ago, Native-American tribes lived in Mexico. The Aztecs built beautiful cities. They had a calendar (歷法) and a written  language. However, the Spanish destroyed the Aztecs in 1521. For the next 300 years, Spain ruled over Mexico. That's why Mexicans speak Spanish.

Every September 16 the Mexican people hold a celebration in Mexico City, their country's capital. It is their Independence Day. On that date in 1821 they told Spain they would no longer be ruled.

Breaking free from Spain caused a war. When it was over, the Mexicans had their own government. They made their own laws.

Today America and Mexico are friends, but it wasn't always that way. President James Polk wanted America to reach from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. He tried to buy what is now the American southwest from Mexico. Mexico would not sell. So from 1846 to 1848 Mexico and America fought a war to ascertain where their borders would be. When the war ended, Mexico had lost a lot of land. Now the Rio Grande River forms the border between the two nations. America is on the north side of the river. Mexico is on the south side.

Mexico has mountains and a hot, dry climate. Crops can grow on only a small part of the land. Still, Mexicans grow much of the coffee, oranges, and sugar used in the US. Mexicans have influenced building styles in southwestern US and added words such as patio and canton to American English. Americans also enjoy eating many Mexican foods like burritos, tacos, tortillas, and tamales.
