     What would you say if a drug dealer put a container of free heroin in your living room? Ninety-eight
percent of the homes in the United States have containers full of a drug-television. The average
American home has a TV on for more than 6 hours every day. Kids who are growing up these days
watch an average of 20,000 hours of TV - the electronic babysitter, by the time they’re 15.
     Researchers say that a TV-viewer’s brain waves enter a pre-sleep period within 30 seconds of
turning on the set and that this pattern can be addicting. Other experts point out that TV is the easiest
way to escape concerned with our great addictions to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and food. There is,
however, no treatment available for television addiction.
     Stories of TV addiction are incredible. One man said, "Last December, I concluded that TV was
controlling our lives. It kept my wife and me from talking with each other. I knew I had to do something.
Our efforts to control the habit had failed. Finally, I decided to kill the TV. I picked it up and threw it as
far as I could into the yard. Since then, our lives have been much better. We read, talk, and even have
friends. My advice to TV addicts is: Kill the TV!"

     A mobile phone service which makes your handset scream when it's been stolen has been started,
with its makers claiming it could put an end to mobile theft altogether.
     The Remote XT system uses software to link customers' mobile phones directly to a secure remote

is lost or stolen, they can dial a 24-hour call centre and have it registered. The handset is then disabled,
and cannot even be used if a new SIM card is put in. At the same time, the system sets off an alarm

     Existing data is also wiped off the phone but, because the information has been stored centrally,
as soon as the victim gets a news phone, the system designers said.
     "By making mobiles unusable to anyone but the rightful owner the phones become worthless and we
will see the market for stolen handsets stopped once and for all," said Mark Whiteman, managing
director of Remote XT. For the moment the system is aimed at business customers and comes with a
fee of 9.99 pounds per month, possibly available to the majority of average users within two years as
mobile technology advances.
      According to the latest UK government statistics, mobile phone theft has risen 190 percent in recent
years, with one third of all UK robberies now solely involving mobile phones.

queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one
entrance to their buses, which could explain their more relaxed attitude to the queue.

the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly, is the main reason why British people are no longer
prepared to queue? As the Internet has become more popular among shoppers, impatience with queuing has
increased.
     [5] "Used to buying without delay, customers are even abandoning purchases rather than wait their turn,"
says Stuart Neal of Barclaycard. "Shoppers are also less likely to queue for longer if the item they are buying
is of low value." Perhaps I will have to replace "queuing" with"impatience" in my list of things I associate with
