You may not pay much attention to your daily elevator ride. Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it. But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina, US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”.

“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (禮儀) is sort of odd (奇怪的),” Gray told the BBC. “They are socially very interesting but often very awkward places.”

We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in, we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, lift users unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed.

He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want – it’s your own little box.

If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (對角線地) across from each other to create distance.

When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle. And when there is a fourth person it becomes a square, with someone in every corner. A fifth person is probably going to have to stand in the middle.

New entrants to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the rule is simple – look down, or look at your phone.

Why are we so awkward in lifts?

“You don’t have enough space,” Professor Babette Renneberg, a clinical psychologist at the Free University of Berlin, told the BBC. “Usually when we meet other people we have about an arm’s length of distance between us. And that’s not possible in most elevators.”

In such a small, enclosed space it becomes very important to act in a way that cannot be construed (理解) as threatening or odd. “The easiest way to do this is to avoid eye contact,” she said.

閱讀下列短文, 從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中, 選出最佳選項。

The State Council submitted (提交) a bill which aims to allow couples to have two children if either parent is an only child. It focuses on adjusting and improving the family planning policy.

The State Council argues adjustment to the policy in the face of a steadily declining birth rate. The birth rate has remained relatively low and shows a tendency to fall further. The rate has dropped to between 1.5 and 1.6 since the 1990s, which means each Chinese woman of child-bearing age gives birth to 1.5 to 1.6 children on average. The working population began to drop in 2012 by 3.45 million every year, and it is likely to fall by 8 million each year after 2023.

The population aged 60 and above will reach 400 million and account for one-fourth of the total population in the early 2030s, up from one-seventh now.

“If the current family planning policy continues, the birth rate will continue to fall and lead to a sharp drop of the total population after reaching a peak,” said Li Bin, minister in charge of the National Health and Family Planning Commission.

“It is the right time to make changes: The low birth rate is stable, the working population is still large and the burden of supporting the elderly remains relatively light,” he added.

An increase in birth is expected if the policy changes but will not seriously affect the food supply, public education, health care or employment.

China’s food safety and public service plans are designed to meet the needs of 1.43 billion population in 2020 and 1.5 billion in 2033. Even with the policy change, the total population will reach no more than 1.38 billion in 2015, Li said.

1. Why did the State Council submit the bill?

A. To increase the population of Han nationality.

B. To balance the nature and society.

C. To develop the economy of China.

D. To solve the social population issue.

2.The new policy may have an effect on the following expect _____.

A. public education B. the food supply

C. the divorce rate D. employment

3.What can we learn about the population in China from the passage?

A. After the year of 2023, the population will become less and less.

B. There’s no need to carry out the family planning policy.

C. At the beginning of 2030s the aging problem will be worse than now.

D. In the year 2023, the population may be the least.

Imagine you are standing on the 70th floor of the Empire State Building, staring at the cityscape. Suddenly a man pushes past you, opens the window and announces his intention to jump. You yell out, “Stop! Don’t do it!” the six-foot-five figure turns to you and menacingly (恐嚇地) says, “Try to stop me and I’ll take you with me!”

“Umm… No problem, sir. have a good trip. any last words?”

“Let me tell you my troubles,” he says, “my wife left me, my kids won’t talk to me, I lost my job and my pet turtle died, so why should I go on living?”

Suddenly you have a flash of inspiration. “Sir, close your eyes for a minute and imagine that you are blind. No colors, no sights of children playing, no fields of flowers, no sunset. Now imagine that suddenly there’s a miracle. You open your eyes and your vision is restored! Are you going to jump? Or will you stick around for a week to enjoy the sights?”

“I’ll stay for a week.”

“But what happened to all the troubles?”

“I guess they’re not so bad. I can see!”

Well, your eyesight is worth at least five million dollars. You’re a rich man!

If you really appreciate your eyesight, the other pains are insignificant. But if you take it all for granted, then nothing in life will ever truly give you joy. Actually, there are misconceptions on the road to happiness.

misconception1: “Once I know the tools for being happy, then it will work like magic.”

Don’t expect the results to come automatically. It is possible to understand how to achieve happiness, yet not put it into practice. In fact, many people actually prefer to be comfortable and unhappy, rather than bear the discomfort of changing their habits. Just as learning any new skill requires effort, you have to be willing to invest serious effort to achieve real happiness.

Misconception 2: “if I become content and satisfied with what I have, I’ll lose my motivation to achieve more.”

Now ask someone who is depressed, “Let’s go fishing!” “I’m tired. Maybe tomorrow. And anyway, I might rain…” in reality, happy people are energetic and ambitious. There’s never enough time to do everything they want to do.

Misconception 3:

A beautiful Sunday afternoon, you’re in the park having a picnic with friends. Suddenly one person complains: “who forgot the forks? It’s too hot for volleyball. I want to go home already.”

When our mood negatively affects others, we recognize we have duty to be happy and not spoil the fun. But what about when we’re at home with our family? Or when we go into the office on Monday morning? like an open pit in the middle of the road, a sourpuss(牢騷滿腹的人) is a public danger. Being happy is part of being considerate to the people around us.

1.The story is placed at the beginning of the passage in order to .

A. tell a skill of persuasion

B. warn the danger of standing on a tall building

C. emphasize the importance of eyesight

D. introduce the theme of the passage

2.What can be inferred from the underlined sentences?

A. Everything has a price.

B. We should value what we have.

C. Every dog has its day.

D. Eyesight is more important.

3.What is right about happy?

A. Happy is a gift.

B. Happy is limited.

C. Happy is contagious (會傳染的).

D. Happy is no more than a skill.

4.The best subtitle of Misconception 3 is .

A. If unhappy occurs at home, I needn’t pretend to be happy

B. If I can’t make others unhappy, I won’t be happy.

C. If someone is happy, then others around them are happy.

D. If I want to be depressed, that’s my own prerogative.

Tayka Hotel de Sal

Where: Tahua, Bolivia

How much: About $ 95 a night

Why it’s cool: You’ve stayed at hotels made of brick or wood, but salt? That’s something few can claim. Tayka Hotel de Sal is made totally of salt---including the beds (though you’ll sleep on regular mattresses and blankets). The hotel sits on the Salar de Uyuni, a prehistoric dried-up lake which is the world’s biggest salt flat. Builders use the salt from the 4,633-square-mile flat to make the bricks, and glue them together with a paste (糊) of wet salt that hardens when it dries. When rain starts to dissolve (溶解) the hotel, the owners just mix up more salt paste to strengthen the bricks.

Green Magic Nature Resort

Where: Vythiri, India

How much: About $ 240 a night

Why it’s cool: Taking a pulley(滑輪)---operated lift 86 feet to your treetop room is just the start of your adventure. As you look out of your open window, there is no glass! You watch monkeys and birds in the rain forest canopy(罩篷). Later you might test your fear of heights by crossing the handmade rope bridge to the main part of the hotel, or just sit on your bamboo bed and read. You don’t even have to come down for breakfast---the hotel will send it up on the pulley-drawn “elevator”.

Dog Bark Park Inn B&B

Where: Cottonwood, Idaho

How much: $ 92 a night

Why it’s cool: This doghouse isn’t just for the family pet. Sweet Willy is a 30-foot-tall dog with guest rooms in his belly. Climb the wooden stairs beside his hind leg to enter the door in his side. You can relax in the main bedroom, go up a few steps of the loft(閣樓) in Willy’s head, or hang out inside his nose. Although you have a full private bathroom in your quarters, there is also a toilet in the 12-foot-tall fire hydrant(消防栓) outside.

Gamirasu Cave Hotel

Where: Ayvali, Turkey

How much: Between $ 130 and $ 450 a night

Why it’s cool: Experience what it was like 5,000 years ago, when people lived in these mountain caves formed by volcanic ash. But your stay will be much more modern. Bathrooms and electricity provide what you expect from a modern hotel, and the white volcanic ash, called tufa, keeps the rooms cool in summer. (Don’t worry--- there is heat in winter.)
