F . Scott Fitzgerald, born on September 24,1896, an American novelist, was once a student of St.Paul Academy, the Newman School and attended Princeton. University for a short while. In 1917 he joined the army and was posted in Alabama, where he met his future wife Zelda Sayre. Then he had to make some money to impress her.
His life with her was full of great happiness, as he wrote in his diary:“ My own happiness in the past often got such joy that I could share it even with the person dearest to me but had to walk it away in quiet streets and take down parts of it in my diary.”
This side of paradise, his first novel, was published in 1920. Encouraged by its success, Fitzgerald began to devote more time to his writing. Then he continued with the novel the Beautiful and Damned (1922), a collection of short stories Thales of the Jazz Age (1922), and a play The Vegetable (1923). But his greatest success was the novel The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, which quick brought him praise from the literary world. Yet it failed to give him the needed financial security. Then, in 1926, he published another collection of short stories All the Sad Young Men.
However, Fitzgerald’s problems with his wife Zelda had an effect on his writing. During the 1920s he tried to reorder his life, but failed. By 1930, his wife had her first breakdown and went to a Swiss clinic. During this period he completed novels Tender Is the Night in 1934 and The love of the last Tycoon in 1940. While his wife was in hospital in the United States, he got totally addicted to(沉迷于) alcohol. Sheila Graham, his dear friend, helped him fight his alcoholism.

Captain R．F．Scott, the famous Antarctic explorer, made two expeditions to the Antarctic.
His first expedition, in the ship Discovery, took place between 1901 and 1904 and was half funded by the government．On this trip, Scott and his party anchored Discovery in McMurdo Sound．Ross Island where they built a simple room．During the winter they conducted astronomical observations．In June the sun cannot be seen from within the Antarctic Circle and it is dark 24 hours day．In the spring, the weather improved and Scott, Dr Wilson and Ernest Shackleton set off．towards, the South Pole．They had some sledge （雪橇） dogs but didn't really know how to "use them, so they largely pulled the sledges themselves, Scott traveled slightly further, much further than anyone before but it was a terrible journey．
In 1910, he sailed on another scientific voyage to the Antarctic, this time in the Terra Nova, originally a whaler （捕鯨艦）．This second expedition had less government support and many schools made collections for the expedition．While Scott was sailing south on his second expedition, he heard the news that the Norwegian, Roald Amundsen （1872-1928）, was going to Antarctica and was likely to try to reach the South Pole first．Although Amundsen was an experienced Arctic explorer, Scott was determined to get there first．He headed to the south early in 191l, and set out towards the Pole on November I from Ross Island during the second summer there．However, on January 18, 1912 when they arrived, they found Amundsen and his four Norwegian companions had got there just over a month before them．Scott's men had been beaten．On the way back, they encountered disaster and all of them died．Near the end of the Antarctic winter of 1912, their, bodies were found, Their journals and papers were recovered．
Following the news of his death, Scott became a British hero, a status maintained for more than 50 years．In the closing decades of the twentieth century, however, in a more skeptical age, the legend was reassessed．From a previously unassailable position, Scott became a figure of controversy, with questions raised about his competence and character．
