  Albert Einstein

Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on Mar.14, 1879.Einstein's parents moved from Ulm to Munich when Einstein was still a baby. The family business was the manufacture of electrical parts. When the business failed, in 1894, the family moved to Milan, Italy. At this time Einstein decided officially to give up his German citizenship.Within a year, still without having completed secondary school(中學),Einstein failed an examination that would have allowed him to continue with a course of study leading to a diploma(文憑)as an electrical engineer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. He spent the next year in nearby Aarau at a secondary school, where he enjoyed excellent teachers and first-rate facilities(設備)in physics.Einstein returned in 1896 to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where he graduated, in 1900 as a secondary school teacher of mathematics and physics.

After two years he got a post at the Swiss patent(專利)office in Bern. The patent-office work required Einstein's careful attention, but while employed(1902-1909)there, he completed an astonishing range of publications in theoretical physics. For the most part these texts were written in his spare time and without the benefit of close contact(接觸)with either the scientific literature or theoretician colleagues.Einstein submitted one of his scientific papers to the University of Zurich for a Ph.D.degree in 1905.In 1908 he sent a second paper to the University of Bern and became a lecturer there. The next year Einstein received a regular appointment as associate professor of physics at the University of Zurich.

Laptop computers are popular all over the world.People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want.Within five minutes, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $ 10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to“speak”with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast food restaurant or under trees-anywhere at all.

Midsummer was the festival throughout most of England, most of Scotland, Shetland Islands, and the Orkneys.Fires, dancing, games, and various shenanigans(胡鬧)were the general rule on this“longest day of the year”.But the festival has lost some of its color in the passing centuries

By the 1680s, British folklorist(民俗學家)John Aubrey reported that“still in many places, they make fires on the hills:but the Civil War in Britain in the 1640s have put all these customs quite out of fashion”.

Thousands of years ago, builders of Stonehenge(巨石陣)no doubt celebrated their own midsummer festival among the stones.More recently a British group called the Ancient Order of Druids, founded in 1781 by Hurle, suggested celebrating the festival on June 21 every year at the site.In the later years this day attracted huge crowds.Bread and wine, candles, bells, incense(熏香),and priests(神甫)in white and purple shared wine from a silver cup as the midsummer sun shone across the old stones. It remained a local festival for a long time in history. In the mid-1980s, vandalism(故意破壞藝術的行為)and unruly people imperiled(危害)the festival's future.
