The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around, when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady with a warm smile. She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old.”
"Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked. She replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of kids and then retire(退休) and travel..."
I knew she was joking. I was curious what might have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
"I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.
We became friends. Every day we would talk nonstop after class. I was always interested in listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. And Rose easily made friends wherever she went.
At the end of the term we invited Rose to make a little speech. She cleared her throat and began, "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. I’ve learned a few secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.”
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.
“Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do……"

Scientific experiments can sometimes go wrong and when they do the results may range from the disastrous to the troubling. One such experiment took place in South America about fifty years ago. Whether its final consequences will cause serious damage or nothing more than a small trouble still remains to be seen.
The story began in 1956 when an American scientist working in Brazil decided to solve the problem of increasing the productivity of that country’s bees. He imported a very active type of African bee from Tanzania and mated (交配)it with the more easy-going native variety to produce a new kind of bees. The new bees worked harder and produced twice as much honey. It seemed that Professor Kerr, for that was the scientist's name, had a total success on his hands.
Then things began to go wrong. For some reason as yet unseen, but perhaps as a result of something in their environment, the new bees began to develop extremely attacking personalities. They became bad-tempered and easy to be angry, attacked the native bees and drove them from their living places.
But worse was to follow. Having taken over the countryside, the new bees, with their dangerous stings (叮) , began to attack its neighbors -- cats, dogs, horses, chickens and finally man himself. A long period of terror began that has so far killed a great number of animals and about 150 human beings.
This would have been bad enough if the bees had stayed in Brazil. But now they are on the move, heading northwards in countless millions towards Central and North America, and moving at the alarming speed of 200 miles a year. The countries that lie in their path are naturally worried because it looks as if nothing can be done to stop them.
小題1: The results of the South American experiment         .
A.are not yet certainB.have proved to be wrong
C.have caused a serious troubleD.are not important
小題2: The experiment mentioned in this passage was designed to             .
A.make African bees less active
B.make Brazilian bees more easy-going
C.increase the number of bees in Brazil
D.increase the amount of honey in Brazil
小題3: Which of the following may be the cause of the new bees' attacking personalities?
A.Their production of honey.B.Their living environment.
C.Their hard work.D.Their bad temper.
小題4: The last paragraph implies that            .
A.the bees have been driven to Central and North America
B.the bees must be stopped from moving north
C.the bees may bring about trouble in more countries
D.the bees prefer to live in Brazil

Baekeland and Hartmann report that the " short sleepers"  had been more or less average in  their sleep needs until the men were in their teens. But at about age 15 0r so, the men voluntarily  began cutting down their nightly sleep time because of pressures from school, work, and other  activities. These men tended to regard their nightly periods of unconsciousness as bothersome interruptions in their daily routines.
In general, these "short sleepers" appeared ambitious, active, energetic and cheerful. They  stuck to their opinions, and were very sure about their job choices..They often held several jobs at  once, or worked full-or part-time while going to school. And many of them had a strong urge to appear "normal"  or " acceptable"  to their friends and colleagues.
When asked to remember their dreams,  the " short sleepers"  did poorly. More than this,  they seemed to prefer not remembering. Similarly, their usual way of dealing with psychological problems was not to admit that the problem existed, and then to keep busy in the hope that the trouble would go away.
The sleep patterns of the " short sleepers"  were similar to,  but less extreme than,  sleep patterns shown by many mental patients categorized as manic  (躁狂者).
The "long sleepers" were quite different indeed. Baekeland and Hanmann report that these young men have been lengthy sleepers since childhood. They seemed to enjoy their sleep, protected it, and were quite concemed when sometimes they didn't have their desired 9 hours of nightly bed rest. They tended to remember their dreams much better than the  " short sleepers".      Many of the "long sleepers" were shy, anxious, quiet, nervous, passive, mildly depressed, and unsure of themselves ( particularly in social situations) . Several openly stated that sleep was an escape from their daily problems.
小題1:From the passage, we can leam that           .
A."short sleepers" need less sleep by nature
B."long sleepers" sleep a longer period of time during the day
C.many "long sleepers" preserve their sleeping habit formed during their childhood
D.many " short sleepers" have to reduce their nightly sleep time because of busy work
小題2:Many "short sleepers" are likely to hold the view that _____.
A.sleep is a good way to escape from the reality
B.sleep is not so important as their daily activities
C.sleep affects their judgment on some important things
D.sleep is the best way to deal with psychological troubles
小題3: It can be learned from the passage that the"short sleepers" _____.
A.do not know how to relax properly
B.are more unlikely to run into mental problems
C.are full of energy even under the pressures of life
D.often pay little attention to the consequences of inadequate sleep
小題4: When sometimes they cannot enjoy adequate sleep, the "long sleepers" might ______.
A.appear disturbedB.become energetic
C.feel dissatisfiedD.be extremely unhappy

Everyone may all have the experience of feeling anxious and stressed when having a rough day or having some troubles. Different people may choose different ways to deal with it, and for most people a break for a 10-minute walk may be quite useful.
Anyway, here is another way around: to get a piece of chewing gum, and chew it. According to a Swinburne University of Technology study, gum-chewing has been found to “relieve anxiety, improve alertness(機敏性) and reduce stress among individuals in a laboratory setting.”
Some may argue that a laboratory is not the same as an office. But check out the conditions of the study: individuals were monitored while performing “a group of ‘multi-tasking’ activities.” Doesn’t it sound like the situation in the office?
Here’s a summary of some of the study’s findings:
Gum chewers showed a reduction in anxiety as compared to non-gum chewers by nearly 17 percent during mild stress and nearly 10 percent in appropriate stress.
Gum chewers showed improvement in alertness over non-gum chewers by nearly 19 percent during mild stress and 8 percent in moderate stress.
Improved Performance: Chewing gum resulted in a big improvement in overall performance on multi-tasking activities.
Although these aren’t major improvements, every little bit works and chewing a piece of gum is a lot quicker and easier than slipping outside for a 10-minute walk. So, how does gum work this magic? In part it does so by lowering the level of cortisol(皮質醇)—a steroid(類固醇) hormone that is released in response to stress in your system.
A few words of advice before you reach for the gum: don’t crack your gum, and be sure to chew it with your mouth closed. In fact, I’d say keep the gum out of meetings, because it really looks impolite to others around you.
小題1:From the study in the text we know that_________________.
A.gum chewers may lack alertness
B.gum chewers tend to be less stressed
C.gum chewers can finish many jobs perfectly
D.gum chewers can reduce their anxiety and anger easily
小題2:How does gum work to reduce stress according to the text?
A.It works by improving alertness.
B.It works by allowing a 10-minute walk.
C.It works by reducing one’s level of cortisol.
D.It works by being chewed in a laboratory setting.
小題3:Which one may the author probably agree with?
A.People should chew gum with their mouths closed in a meeting.
B.It is impolite to chew gum in a meeting with people around you.
C.People can crack gum freely when meeting friends.
D.People should be careful when chewing gum at home.
小題4:What does the text mainly talk about?
A.How to chew gum.B.How to relieve stress.
C.Why people love chewing gum.D.Chewing gum can relieve stress.

Most students try to learn English grammar using grammar textbooks. They study grammar rules and take grammar tests. They use an analytical(分析的) approach, attempting to memorize, and then apply, a great number of rules.
However, research has proved this method inefficient and ineffective. The truth is, the human brain simply cannot consciously remember process and use hundreds of or thousands of grammar rules. Real speech is too fast.
Native speakers do not learn grammar in this way, but rather intuitively (憑直覺地) and unconsciously. They learn in a complete way, not by attempting to memorize individual grammar rules. As a result, native speakers use correct grammar fluently and easily.
Fortunately, it is possible for English learners to learn grammar this way. Language teacher Blaine Ray has developed a unique "intuitive" approach to teach English grammar. Her system uses "point of view" stories to teach the patterns of English grammar, allowing students unconsciously to acquire correct grammar without ever studying grammar rules.
In this system, the teacher first tells a simple story from one point of view. It may be told about the past, then repeated, but beginning with "since he was a child"; then repeated again, but this time about the future.
Listening to these stories allows students intuitively and effortlessly to learn English grammar and makes them be able to use it correctly when they speak.
Point of View Stories is a creative new way to study English grammar, and offers hope to millions of frustrated English learners.
小題1:Which of the following ways is approved by the author?
A.Remembering grammar rules.
B.Taking grammar tests.
C.Analyzing grammatical structure.
D.Applying language to situations.
小題2: What does the underlined part "this way" in the fourth paragraph refer to?
A.Talking to native speakers when learning.
B.Learning English grammar in a complete way.
C.Using correct English grammar.
D.Learning English grammar from a teacher.
小題3:From this passage we learn that ______.
A.native speakers learn English grammar by listening to stories
B.Blaine Ray’s method gets students to grasp correct grammar unconsciously
C.Blaine Ray teaches grammar rules by asking students to tell stories
D.it’s hard for students to speak correct English in the new system
小題4:This passage wants to ______.
A.criticize the traditional way of learning grammar
B.introduce a new way to study English grammar
C.ask students to learn English grammar by listening to stories
D.tell us how the native speakers learn English grammar
小題5:Why shouldn’t the English learners use an analytical approach?
A.because the analytical approach can let them learn English grammar effortlessly
B.because the analytical approach makes them be able to use English correctly when they speak.
C.because the analytical approach can’t let them memorize and then apply a great number of rules.
D.because Real speech is too fast.

LG Electronics, the world’s fourth largest cell phone producer, has added another feature to the mobile phone-reading books for the visually impaired(弱視的). The company started marketing the model, the LF1300 on Sep.18. No other people but the blind and visually-impaired with a certificate(證書) can buy the talking phone at sales shops of LG Electronics.
“The LF1300 is the world’s first mobile phone that is capable of reading books for the print-disabled, who otherwise could not enjoy them. This is not about making money but about continuing to put froth efforts to reduce the digital difference for the disabled,” LG Vice President said.
Its users can download about 300 audio (聲音的) books from the Internet site of LG Sangam Library to their phones for free in two ways. One is to access the digital library’s Website on a computer designed for the blind to get the audio books and transfer them to cell phones. The other is to download the digital books directly with cell phones through the wireless net work by touching a hot key on the LF1300 phone.
On top of its unique feature of reading books, the LF1300 is no worse than the popular top-line phones in both outlooks and functionalities(功能性). The phone is armed with an MP3 player and a Bluetooth headset, enabling users to listen to the music or talk without a cord. The user interface(界面) of the LF1300 is also designed for the blind, enabling phone users to control it through a voice guidance system.

The World's Largest Insect .This giant insect can be used as a toy.
A child ties one end of a string to a stick and the other end around the "neck" of an insect. Holding the stick, the child lets the insect go. With a loud whirring sound, the insect takes off, pulling the string in a large curve over the child's head. The child laughs as the stick jumps around. The child is African, and the toy is the African Goliath beetle, the largest insect in the world.
The Goliath is a true insect because it has six legs and a body that is divided into three parts. Like all beetles, it has two pairs of wings. The front pair are thick and stiff and protect the back pair, which are soft. It is these soft back wings that make the beetle fly forward. They also cause the loud whirring sound the beetle makes when it flies. To steer, the beetle twists and turns its legs the same way you steer a bike by turning its front wheel.
African children often use the Goliath beetle as a toy. Although it is over 15 centimeters long, it is quite harmless.
小題1: The African Goliath beetle is _______.
A.the world's largest insect
B.a toy used in many parts of the world
C.the only insect found in Africa
D.the world's smallest insect
小題2:What do African children often use the Goliath beetle as?
A.a tool.B.a toy. C.harmfull insects.D.Good animals.
小題3:We know the Goliath beetle is a true insect because it _______.
A.makes a whirring sound when it flies B.has both soft and hard wings
C.has six legs and a body with three parts D.can fly
小題4:When flying, the Goliath steers by_______.
A.turning its soft back wings
B.twisting and turning its hard front wings
C.twisting and turning its legs
D.twisting and turning its whole body

This winter, the air quality over the north China plain was so bad that it was actually off the standard scale. The air pollution reached levels that the World Health Organization describes as dangerous. On Thursday, heavy smog blanketed most of northern and eastern China again.
It is reasonable to ask why the air pollution is so bad this winter. Weather conditions and topographic(地形學的) factors have been given as reasons, but, although contributing factors, these are not to blame. The worsening air pollution is linked to an energy mix that relies heavily on coal and to motor vehicle emissions(排放). But despite the astonishing growth of motor vehicles in our cities, it is the burning of coal that is the biggest cause of air pollution. More than half of the country's power plants are located in the eastern region and China's coal consumption has more than doubled in the past decade, reaching 3.8 billion tons last year, accounting for almost half the world's total coal consumption. And with coal occupying nearly 70 percent of the country's primary energy consumption, it has become critical to reduce the use of coal if we are to solve the nation's overall air pollution problem.
In the face of the poisonous air recently, one citizen said, "we have nothing but hot air to purify the skies". In fact, the government plans to have 350 billion yuan ($55.67 billion) investment in improving coal-fired facilities and limiting the use of yellow-label cars that do not meet the Euro I emissions standard and so on.
However, it would be far more effective to reduce emissions at the source, which means that the biggest challenge currently facing government departments is saying "no" to the country's air polluting offenders. According to the Joint Prevention and Control Plan on Air Pollution in Key Regions released recently by the State Council, the amount of coal the nation consumes is set to rise by 30 percent during the period of the 12th Five-Year Plan. This is not going to let anyone breathe easier.
This highlights a key problem when it comes to environmental issues in this country - economic development comes first. The fundamental cause of the worsening air pollution is the idea of economic growth at any cost, which has resulted in ever-worsening pollution. And the priority(優先權)given to economic growth presents another problem, namely the failure of existing environmental protection policies and regulations to control pollution. For instance, the current weak regulations covering emissions would suggest there has been a significant reduction in emissions when clearly this is not the case. Also those enterprises found breaking the regulations are still far lower than the cost of treating the pollution they produce. This means even if many large-scale enterprises with lagging production capacity(能力) fail to meet the requirements for environmental protection, the environmental protection department is incapable of shutting these enterprises down or forcing their relocation.
Dealing with air pollution requires taking action at the local level to reduce vehicle emissions and at the regional level to reduce industrial emissions. But it also requires giving more priority to environmental issues in policymaking. Our hope is that the environmental protection department will be truly capable of saying "no" to pollution, and it will raise standards and effectively enforce them, and that governments at all levels will prioritize quality of life not just economic growth.
小題1:The writer mentions the heavy smog in parts of China in Paragraph1 in order to_____.
A.remind people to stay in doors because of the bad air quality
B.show people’s concern about the priority to economic growth
C.introduce the issue about the serious air pollution
D.highlight the importance of government’s policies and regulations
小題2:Why is it a big challenge for the government to say “no” to the air polluting offenders in China?
A.Because enterprises are encouraged to develop economy at the cost of the environment.
B.Because much emphasis has been laid on economic growth regardless of the cost.
C.Because it’s impossible to relocate the enterprises for lack of money.
D.Because the production capacity of enterprises falls behind the required speed.
小題3:It can be learned from the passage that the essential reason for the worsening air conditions in China is_______.
A.the sharp growth of coal consumption in recent years
B.the rapid increase of motor vehicles in cities
C.the building of power plants in northern China
D.the poor weather conditions caused by complex geographical factors
小題4:According to the writer, which of the following is the key to solving the air pollution problem?
A.Giving priority to economic development in policymaking.
B.Making environment-friendly policies and carrying them out effectively.
C.Increasing investment in the construction of coal-fired facilities.
D.Limiting the use of cars not meeting the required emission standard
小題5:Which best describes the writer’s tone in the passage?
A.Pessimistic.B.Convincing.C.Doubtful.D.Concerned.

People have always been dreaming of going to the moon. As long as the year 1901, H. G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book vividly describing a trip to the moon. On landing there, the explorers discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. Words failed to express their surprise when they spotted so many “moon people”. The “moon people” felt even more surprised. “Why,” they asked, “are you traveling to outer space when you don’t even use your inner space?”
H. G. Wells could only imagine a travel to the moon. In 1969, human beings really left their footsteps on the moon. People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the “moon people” asked is still an interesting one. A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.
Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo, Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The “Channel”, a tunnel connecting England and France, is now complete.
But what about underground cities? Japan’s Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called “Alice Cities”. The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on. A solar dome (太陽能穹頂) would cover the whole city.
Supporters of underground development argue that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth’s space. The space, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness. H. G. Wells’ “moon people” would second it. Would you?
小題1:The explorers in H. G. Well’s story were surprised to find that the “moon people”     .
A.knew so much about the earth
B.understood their language
C.lived in underground cities
D.were advanced in technology
小題2:What does the underlined word “it” (paragraph 2) refer to?
A.Discovering the moon’s inner space

A.Offices, shopping areas, power stations.
B.Tunnels, car parks, shopping areas.
C.Gardens, car parks, power stations.
D.Tunnels, gardens, offices.
小題4: We can learn from the text that     .
A.H. G. Wells once went to moon himself.
B.Underground cities are more comfortable.
C.The solar dome is a necessary part of underground cities.
D.More underground systems will be in place in 2013.
小題5:What would be the best title of the text?
A.Alice Cities — cities of the future
B.Space travel with H. G. Wells
C.Enjoy living underground
D.Building down, not up
