Remind children that bad things don’t last. It may sound simple, but the message is extremely important. “Children often don’t have the experience to know that when something bad happens—they lose an important game or their best friends lets them down—it’s not the end of the world,” explains Nancy Leffert, a senior research scientist with the Research Institute, an American adolescents’(青少年) and children’s research group. “They think their bad feelings will last for ever, or that one failure will ruin everything.”

Unfortunately, that kind of thinking discourages motivation(動機).“If a child believes that the cause of her upset is lasting, or that nothing she does will make a difference, it decreases her ability to keep on trying,” says Dorothy Rich, president of the Mega Skills Education Center of the Home and School Institute, based in Washington. Any time you can help your child see that a situation is not lasting, that a result can be changed, or that one opinion does not reflect reality, you give her reason to hope.

Case in point: “When my daughter Kathy was eight, art was one of her favorite subjects,”says Beth,a mother of two. “Then she got an art teacher who gave a great deal of praise to one student and barely noticed the rest.Kathy was ready to give up until I explained to her,‘Never stop doing your best just because one person doesn’t give you praise.’” Beth had to repeat the advice often, and finally her daughter got the message.“Kathy is twelve now, and art is still one of her strongest subjects.”

A. know how to face a failure

B. try their best to avoid a situation of failure

C. don’t want to stay in bad feelings for ever

D. tend to take a failure as the end of the world

63. Which of the following can a parent say to his children to show that one’s opinion does not reflect reality?

A. “If you call your friend and apologize,he won’t stay mad at you.”

B. “That may be what your teacher thinks, but I see it differently.”

C. “You have lost today, but you can try again tomorrow.”

D. “Go ahead. Don’t care what other people think.”

64. It can be inferred from the passage that_____.

A. teachers’ praise is very important to students

B. good teachers can give students useful advice

D. good teachers can find each student’s favorite subject

Food is life; it gives us the nourishment (營養) we need to stay alive and be healthy. __1.__ Brian Wansink, a professor at the University of Illinois, says we also eat certain foods because they make us feel good, and remind us of happy memories. Wansink calls this kind of food comfort food. For some people, ice cream is a comfort food. For others, a bowl of noodles soup makes them feel good.

__2._ Professor Wansink believes that we connect food with important times, feelings, and people in our lives. “When I was a child, my mother made a delicious soup; I loved it. __3.__ And it helps me feel better,” Says one of Wansink’s coworkers.

Do men and women choose different comfort foods? Wansink’s research at the University of Illinois says “ yes”. In his study, the favorite comfort food for both men and women was ice cream. After this, men usually preferred hot, savory (香的) foods like soup or noodles. __4.__ Men and women like to eat comfort foods when they are happy, but women eat these foods more when they are sad or worried.

__5.__ About 40 percent of the comfort foods in Wansink’s study were healthy main dishes or soups and vegetables. It shows, says Wansink, that a comfort food can taste good and be good for you.

Not all comfort food is junk food.

Where can we buy this sort of food?

Sweet foods are also their preference.

How does a food become comfort food?

Usually, we eat because we are hungry or need energy.

Women like sweet things such as chocolate and cookies.

Now, I often have this kind of food when I am tired or worried.

If you look for a book as a present for a child. You will be spoiled for choice even in a year when there is no new Harry Patten J.K Rowling’s wizard is not alone: the past decade has been a harvest for good children’s books ,which has set off a large quantity of films and in turn led to increased sales of classics such as The Lord of the Rings.

Yet despite that ,reading is increasingly unpopular among children .According to statistics, in 1997 23% said they didn’t like reading at all . In 2003, 35% did . And around 6% of children leave primary school each year unable to read properly.

Maybe the decline is caused by the increasing availability of computer games. Maybe the books boom has affected only the top of the educational pile . Either way , Chancellor Cordon Brown plans to change things for the bottom of the class .In his pre-budget report , he announced the national project of Reading Recovery to help the children struggling most.

Reading Recovery is aimed at six-year-olds ,who receive four months of individual daily half-hour classes with a specially trained teacher . An evaluation earlier this year reported that children on the scheme made 20 months’ progress in just one year, whereas similarly weak readers without special help made just five months’ progress ,and so ended the year even further below the level expected for their age.

International research tends to find that when British children leave primary school they read well ,but read less often for fun than those elsewhere .Reading for fun matters because children who are keen on reading can expect lifelong pleasure and loving books is an excellent indicator of future educational success . According to the OECD, being a regular and enthusiastic reader is of great advantage.

47.Statistics suggested that _______.

A.the number of top students increased with the use of computers

A.An evaluation of it will be made sometime this year.

B.Weak readers on the project were the most hardworking.

C.It aims to train special teachers to help children with reading.

D.Children on the project showed noticeable progress in reading.

49.Reading for fun is important because book-loving children _________.
