Last year I ruined my summer vacation by bringing along a modern convenience

that was too convenient for my own good: the iPad. Instead of looking at nature, I checked my email. Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed (推特簡訊). Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning. I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation but my head wasn’t.

So this year I made up my mind to try something different: withdrawal (退出) from the Internet. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, since I’m bad at self-control. But I was determined. I started by giving the iPad to my wife.

The cellphone signal at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in frustration (沮喪). I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan. Largely cut off from e-mail, Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites, I had few ways to connect to the world except for radio and how much radio can one listen to, really? I had to do what I had planned to all along: read books.

This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife, I won in my vacation struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, not the iPad, that was the problem.I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “ I don’t need it,” I said.

However, as we return to post -vacation life, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I’m back at work? There are times when the need to know what’s being said right now is great. And I have no intention of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation (誘惑) to check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website or two.

I think a vacation is supposed to help you reset your brain to become more productive. Here I hope this one worked.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學年山東棗莊三中高二6月學情調查英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia(懷舊). It's fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You'll realize what's changed is you. Home is where we ran remember pain, live, and some other experiences; We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.

If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It's empty, but it's where my earliest memories are.

There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween-when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table, I can see my favorite room in the house, my parents' room. It is simple: a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime - waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.

I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart, on a physical property(住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew and I learned.

Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I'll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I'll be blamed by Mom. But I don't mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I'm home.

1.Why does the author call her parents' bed her "safe zone"(Paragraph 3)?

A. It is her favorite place to play.

B. Her needs can be satisfied there.

C. Her grandparents' photos are lined on each side.

D. Her parents always play together with her there.

2.What can be learned from the passage?

A. The old furniture is still in the author's fist bedroom.

B. The author can still visit her first physical mom in Los Angeles.

C. The author's favorite room in her first home is the dining room.

D. Many people of the author's age can still find their first physical homes.

3.Sometimes when she feels lost, the author will _______.

A. Open the window at night

B. lie down in bed to have a dream

C. try to bring back a sense of home

D. go to Los Angeles to visit her mom

4.What is the author's purpose of writing this passage?

A. To express how much she is attached to her home.

B. To declare how much she loves her first house.

C. To describe the state of her family.

D. To look back on her childhood.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學年重慶一中高二下期中考試英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

On the basis of cultural relativism, the values of artistic works are simply reflections of local social and economic conditions. Such a view, however, fails to explain the ability of some works of art to excite the human mind across cultures and through centuries.

History has seen the endless productions of Shakespearean plays in every major language of the world. It is never rare to find that Mozart packs Japanese concert halls, as Japanese painter Hiroshige does Paris galleries. Unique works of this kind are different from today’s popular art, even if they began as works of popular art. They have set themselves apart in their timeless appeal and will probably be enjoyed for centuries into the future.

In a 1757 essay, the philosopher David Hume argued that because “the general principles of taste are uniform(不變的) in human nature, “the value of some works of art might be essentially permanent. He observed that Homer was still admired after two thousand years. Works of this type, he believed, spoke to deep and unvarying features of human nature and could continue to exist over centuries.

Now researchers are applying scientific methods to the study of the universality of art. For example, evolutionary psychology is being used by literary scholars to explain the long-lasting themes and plot devices in fiction. The structures of musical pieces are now open to experimental analysis as never before. Research findings seem to indicate that the creation by a great artist is as permanent an achievement as the discovery by a great scientist.

1.According to the passage, what do we know about cultural relativism?

A. It introduces different cultural values.

B. It explains the history of artistic works.

C. It excites the human mind throughout the world.

D. It relates artistic values to local conditions.

2.In Paragraph 2, the artists are mentioned in order to show that _____.

A. popular arts are hardly distinguishable from great arts

B. history gives art works special appeal to set them apart

C. great works of art can go beyond national boundaries

D. great artists are skilled at combining various cultures

3.According to Hume, some works of art can exist for centuries because _____.

A. they appeal to unchanging features of human nature

B. they establish some general principles of art

C. they are created by the world’s greatest artists

D. they are the results of scientific study

4.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?

A. Is Cultural Relativism Scientific?

B. Are Popular Arts Permanent?

C. Is Human Nature Uniform?

D. Are Artistic Values Universal?

__2.__ Do not value first impression highly. Don’t dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that. Although something seems bad at the first impression, it does not mean it is bad all the time. Try to give everything a fair chance.

Don’t try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you. __3._ It is a huge waste of time.

Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs. __4.__ Don’t argue with them and just obey them.

Realize a high school is not the real world. The real world isn’t a closed environment. __5._ What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. A. Do not be too quick to judge.

B. So just learn to say the word “No” a lot.

C. Listen to their advice and consider it carefully.

He’d always wanted to give one to his girlfriend. And nobody was looking. In a minute the ring was in his pocket and Sam was walking out of the shop. But as he went towards the door he felt a hand on his shoulder, “I shall have to call the police.”
