Reading to dogs is an unusual way to help children im prove their literacy skills (讀寫(xiě)能力). With their shining brown eyes, wagging tails, and unconditional love, dogs can provide the nonjudgmental listeners needed for a beginning reader to gain confidence (自信心), according to Intermoun tain Therapy Animals (ITA) in Salt Lake City. The group says it is the first program in the country to use dogs to help develop literacy in children, with the introduction of Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ).

The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea.“Literacy specialists admit that children who read below the level of their fellow pupils are often afraid of reading aloud in a group, often have lower self-respect, and regard reading as a headache,” said Lisa Myron, manager of the children’s department.

Last November the two groups started “Dog Day Afternoon” in the children’s department of the main library. About25 children attended each of the four Saturday-afternoon classes, reading for half an hour. Those who attended three of the four classes received a “pawgraphed” book at the last class.

The program was so successful that the library plans to repeat it in April, according to Dana Thumpowsky, public relations manager.

In this fast-shifting world, there can be no guarantees attached to any particular job. But there is much
that you can do to protect yourself from the change of society, by equipping yourself with the skills to
manage your career more effectively. You need to be a career activist.
If you lost your main source of income tomorrow, could you find a different source to replace it? The
most im-portant thing in protecting yourself now and in the future is ensuring that you have choices. Don't
let yourself be held back by a lack of skill development, or fear of change. Some people have been good
performers in their own or-ganization but discovered that they are stuck. Because they are so closely related
to a particular company or indus-try, their skills are not readily transferred to other jobs.
Don't put all your eggs in one basket. If you limit yourself to one particular area or sector, you limit your
opportuni-ty, too. In a global market place, many jobs come and go quickly as changes in the stock market.
Today's hottest job may not exist tomorrow. If you love computers, then this work represents a great
choice. But don't enter a field just because you think that's where the hot jobs are; even if the job is available,
it may not match well with your own skills and abili-ties. Start with entry of your own strengths and interests,
then see where you may match up best in the job market.
1. How can we ensure that we have choices if we lose the main source of income?
A. Be a good performer in our own organization.
B. Try to develop our skills and be a career activist.
C. Enter a field where the hot jobs are.
D. Transfer to other jobs that use computers.
2. Some people are afraid of change because _______.
A. they have got a hot job
B. they have no other better choices
C. they have got used to a certain job
D. they have no other skills and interests
3. "Put your eggs in one basket" in Paragraph 3 means ______.
A. sticking to only one particular job
B. trying your best to do something well
C. many jobs come and go quickly
D. entering a field where the hot jobs are
4. What is the best job for you to choose according to the writer?
A. Something that is both hot and interesting.
B. Something that brings you good source of income.
C. Something that will always exist in the future.
D. Something involving your strengths and interests.

Think about how many ways there are for you to communicate today. You can send a letter or pick up the phone and make a call. But today, one of the most popular ways to communicate is called instant messaging. In any instant messaging system, you type a little text message on your computer, press the “Send” button, and your message INSTANTLY shows up on your friend’s screen. But how does it work?

Actually, the whole process is very cool. In the 1980s, you could sit down at a computer at any big university. Up to 100 people would be logged in and sharing the computer. They had to share because these computers were very expensive. You could type a command to send an instant message to anyone logged into the same computer. It felt like everyone was connected together no matter where they were sitting.

Today, you can do the same thing — but with lots more possibilities. And you can communicate with just about anyone in the world. All you need is an instant messaging program installed(安裝) on your computer. There are many programs to choose from. AOL's instant messenger (AIM) is probably the most popular right now. MSN has one. Google has Google Talk. Ask your friends and find out what they are using. That will make it easier to communicate with them.

When you are ready, you create an account. Next, you need to figure out the IM names your friends use. Add their IM names to your IM program. Click on the friend you want to talk to and then type away. When you click end, your friend gets the message instantly.

But behind the scenes(在后臺(tái),在幕后), amazing things are happening. Your IM program is communicating with a computer, called a server. The server could be just down the road or even in some other city. All your friend's computers are communicating with a server, too. Your computer is constantly chatting with the server to make everything happen. The network called the Internet makes it all possible.

72. What could be the best title for the passage ?

A. How to Send Instant Messages.

B. The Easiest Way to Talk to a friend.

C. Different Ways of Communication.

D. Development of Communication.

73. Why did so many people share a computer at that time?

A. Because they want to be connected to each other.

B. Because computers were too large.

C. Because few people knew how to use computer.

D. Because computers were too dear.

74. From the passage we can see that “Google Talk”_______.

A. is a kind of search engine          B. refers to a computer company

C. is an IM program                 D. is a famous web site

75. Which of the following is the right order to send an instant message?

a. Press the “send” button         b. Type a little text message

c. Add the receiver’s IM names     d. Open your IM program

A. d, c, b, a.         B. b, c, d, a        C. d ,b, c, a     D. b. c. a. d
