I know what you’re thinking: pizza(比薩餅)? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the a.m. if you want to.

I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早飯), and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re “saying” calories (卡路里),still others just don’t like breakfast food.學(xué)科But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight .“Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R.D. ,  who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.學(xué)科Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.

So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers – it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow.” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it … you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.

The word “l(fā)eftovers” in paragraph I probably means  ______.

A. food remaining after a meal           B. things left undone

C. meals made of vegetables            D. pizza topped with fruit

What can we infer from the text?

A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.

B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.

C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.

D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.

According to the last paragraph, it is important to _______.

A. eat something for breakfast      B. be careful about what you cat

C. heat up food before eating it      D. cat calorie-controlled food

The text is written mainly for those _______.

 A. who go to work early            B. who want to lose weight

 C. who stay up late                D. who eat before sleep

The surprising experiment I am about to describe proves that air is all around you and that it proves down upon you. Air pressure is a wonderful force. When you swim underwater, you can feel water push down your body. The air all around you does the same. However, your body is so used to it that you do not notice this. The pressure is caused by a layer of air called the atmosphere. This layer surrounds the Earth, extending to about five kilometers above the Earth’s surface.

The following experiment is an easy one that you can do at home. But make sure that you are supervised, because you will need to use matches. Now foe the experiment!

    What you need

·A hard-boiled egg without the shell

·A bottle with a neck slightly smaller than the egg

·A piece of paper

·A match

Metheod

1) Check that the paper will sit firmly on the neck of the bottle.

2) Tear the paper into strips and put the strips into the bottle.

3) Light the paper by dropping a burning match into the bottle.

4) Quickly sit the egg on the neck of the bottle.

Result

Astonishingly, the egg will be sucked into the bottle. Your friends will be amazed when you show them the experiment. But be careful when you handle matches.

Why it happened

As the paper burns, it needs oxygen and uses up the oxygen (air) in the bottle. The egg acts as a seal in the neck of the bottle, so no more air can get inside. This reduces the air pressure inside the bottle. The air pressure must equalize, so more air from outside must enter the bottle. The outside air pressure against the egg and then the egg is pushed into the bottle! The proves that air is all around and that it is pressing down on it.

64.Why is there the need to take care when you are doing the experiment?

       A.The bottle could break.

B.You need to light the paper with a match.

C.The egg needs to be shelled.

D.The egg has to be perfectly placed on the neck of the bottle.

65.In the experiment, the burning inside the bottle can___.

A.equalize the air pressure inside and outside

B.make a seal in the neck of the bottle

C.finish up the oxygen inside the bottle

D.produce more oxygen inside the bottle

66.How did the egg put into the bottle?

A.The oxygen inside the bottle sucked the egg in.

B.It became salt without the shell.

C.The neck of the bottle was wide enough.

D.The outside air pressure forced it into the bottle.

67.The experiment is carried cut to prove ______.

A.water pushes on your body when you swim underwater.

B.the earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere.

C.the pressure of air around us has a powerful force.

D.the air pressure is not equalized around us.

Last week, President Barack Obama gave a back- to-school speech to students at the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Students in schools across the country also tuned in to watch the President's speech on TV. He stressed the importance of trying new things, working hard and believing in yourself.

While admitting that times are tough for families across the country, Obama reminded students that hard work now can mean big success later. “Nobody gets to write your destiny(命運(yùn))but you,” he said. “Your future is in your hands. Your life is what you make of it. And nothing—absolutely nothing—is beyond your reach."

Obama spoke about his own life, and lessons he learned from his mother, who had to remind him to stay focused on his studies. He told students the recipe (訣竅) for success: “Showing up to school on time. Paying attention in class. Doing your homework. Studying for exams. Staying out of trouble. ”

Obama encouraged students to embrace(欣然接受)what makes them different. “We shouldn't be embarrassed by the things that make us different,” he said. “We should be proud of them.”

He also suggested taking advantage of all of the opportunities at your school, and always being open to trying new things. “Just because you’re not the best at something today doesn't mean you can't be tomorrow,” he said. “Even if you don't think of yourself as a math person or as a science person—you can still excel in those subjects if you're willing to make the effort. And you may find out you have talents you’d never dreamed of.”

1.What does Obama mainly want to tell the students in Paragraph 2?

A. Some families are experiencing a hard time.

D

Holding a cell phone against your ear or storing it in your pocket may be dangerous to your health. This explains a warning that cell phone manufacturers include in the small print that is often ignored when a new phone is purchased. Apple, for example, doesn’t want iPhones to come closer to you than 1.5 centimeters; Research In Motion, BlackBerry’s manufacturer, recommends 2.5 centimeters.

If health issues arise from cell phone use, the possible effects are huge. Voice calls - Americans chat on cell phones 2.26 trillion(萬(wàn)億)minutes annually - earn $109 billion for the wireless carriers.

Devra Davis, an expert who has worked for the University of Pittsburgh, has published a book about cell phone radiation, “Disconnect.” The book surveys scientific research and concludes the question is not settled.

Brain cancer is a concern that Ms. Davis examines. Over all, there has not been an increase in its incidence since cell phones arrived. But the average masks an increase in brain cancer in the 20-to-29 age group and a drop for the older population.

“Most cancers have multiple causes,” she says, but she points to laboratory research that suggests low-energy radiation could damage cells that could possibly lead to cancer.

Children are more vulnerable to radiation than adults, Ms. Davis and other scientists point out. Radiation that penetrates only five centimeters into the brain of an adult will reach much deeper into the brains of children because their skulls are thinner and their brains contain more absorptive fluid(易吸收的液體). No studies have yet been completed on cell phone radiation and children, she says.

Henry Lai, a research professor in the bioengineering department at the University of Washington, began laboratory radiation studies in 1980 and found that rats exposed to radiation had damaged DNA in their brains.

Ms. Davis recommends using wired headsets or the phone’s speaker. Children should text rather than call, she said, and pregnant women should keep phones away from the abdomen(腹部).

1.Why is the warning in the small print?

A.They think people will not care about it.

B.There is not enough space for the warning.

C.They don’t want the users to pay attention to it.

D.The warning is not important at all.

2.What does the underlined word in sixth paragraph probably mean?

A.a(chǎn)cceptable        B.valuable           C.a(chǎn)ccessible         D.easily affected

3.What can we conclude from the last paragraph?

A.Pregnant women should keep cell phones away.

B.People should use cell phones in the correct way.

C.If you are a child, you’d better text than make phone calls.

D.When you use a cell phone, use a wired headset or the phone’s speaker.

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Be careful when using cell phones.

B.Don’t hold your cell phone against your ear.

C.Rats exposed to radiation have damaged DNA in their brains.

D.Low-energy radiation could damage cells that could lead to cancer.
