        Do you know why different animals or pests (昆蟲) have their special colors? Colors in them seem to be
used mainly to protect themselves.
        Some birds like eating locusts (蝗蟲), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts
change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops (莊稼). When crops are green, locusts look
green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests
with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives
and appear only at night.
        If you study the animal life, you'll find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and
other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters (獵人). This is because they
have the colors much like the trees. Have you ever noticed an even stranger act? A kind of fish in the sea can
send out a kind of very black liquid (液體) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over (散開), its
enemies (敵人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong
at all.

Why do we need to throw less away? There are two reasons. One is that some resources （資源） are nonrenewable （不可再生的） That means there is only a certain amount of that resource in the world . One example of this is oil. When we use up all the oil in the world, there will be no more.

There is another reason for throwing less away. All of our trash has to be put somewhere. Often , it is put into garbage dumps （垃圾場）. Much of that trash will be there for hundreds of years. The dumps will be filled up with all this trash.

There are three ways to cut down on trash.

One way is to recycle. When you recycle something, it means it is made into another shape and used again. Old newspaper may become paper bags. A glass jar can be melted（熔化）and made into a bottle .

Another way to cut down on trash is to reuse things. You can wash and use again a bottle that can hold mustard （芥末醬）or something else .

The third way to cut down on trash is to reduce the amount of trash you make, stop buying thing that you don’t need in the first place. That reduce the amount of the earth’s resources that you use.
