How important is it to keep us healthy ? A group of young people got together to discuss this question. Here’re parts of their discussion.

PETER: I’d like to stay healthy, but to be honest, I only eat food that tastes good. And if food tastes good, it’s usually bad for you, isn’t it? Cola tastes better than water, for example.

TONY: Well, food that is bad for you can taste good! But I prefer not to eat much food that is fried, like, er, French fries. Do you eat fast food, Laura?

LAURA: Do I eat fast food? Never! I love to eat food that is healthy. I want to take care of my health, so I eat mainly fruit and vegetables. Oh! And I stay away from sugar, you do too, don’t you?

TONY: Hm, yes. And I think most people agree that fruit and vegetables are good for health. But, um, I would say that fast food itself isn’t always bad for you, but too much of it is not good.

LAURA: Actually, did you know that it’s been found in laboratory testing that some types of oil are really bad for us? So I don’t eat anything that’s been cooked in oil. Also, did you know that some foods might cause cancer? Like burnt barbecued meat. I’ve heard eating burnt food like this can increase the risk of cancer.

PETER: Really! But I love to eat well-cooked meat, even if it is a little burnt. It’s delicious, and meat isn’t really dangerous, is it?

LAURA: Oh! Yes, it is! I never eat meat. It’s not good for our health at all. If I were you, I’d eat nuts instead.

TONY: Well, I agree it’s good to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, but I think it’s also fine to eat some meat or fish. People who eat a balanced diet should be healthier than those who only eat biscuits and hamburgers, shouldn’t they? I prefer to only eat food that I like, but isn’t it important to eat food that’s healthy, even if you don’t like it? The main thing is to have a good balance.

Peter

Peter likes to eat   64   because he thinks it’s   65  , and he doesn’t mind eating food that is a little 66    . And he thinks   67   food is usually bad for people.

Tony

Tony doesn’t like to eat   68   food and he eats a   69   diet, such as fruit and vegetables, meat and fish. He doesn’t think   70   food is really bad.

Laura

Laura   71   eats food with sugar in it and she would like to eat   __72   instead of meat. She thinks eating burnt food can make people   __73  .

  64. meat        65. delicious         66. burnt     67. tasty      68. fried

Stephen Hawking was one of the most famous scientists in this century. He was born in 1942. he’s a world well-known on space and time. Stephen is researching some very big questions, such as: How did the universe begin? How will it end?
Stephen was a student at Oxford University. He studied math and science. Then, at the age of twenty, he became sick. He was so young, but the doctors said to his family, “He has only two more years to live.” As a matter of fact, the doctors were wrong---- he didn’t die. He can’t walk now but he uses a wheelchair(輪椅). He can’t feed himself and get in or out of bed himself. But he refused to give in to the condition. He talks with the help of a computer. After Oxford, Stephen went to Cambridge University. Three years later, in 1965, he became a doctor of philosophy(哲學).
Because of his serious health problems, it was difficult for him to draw diagrams(圖表) or to write. So he started to think in pictures. With this new way of thinking, he became one of the most famous scientists in the world. In 1891, he met the Pope(教皇) in Rome. They talked about his ideas. Then in 1988, he wrote his first important book, A Brief History of Time. It sold more than 5.5 million copies in 33 different languages. The label(標簽), Made in China, is one that is becoming increasing common in shopping centers all over the world.
In the United States, shoppers at Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer(零售商), have a wide selection of products mostly produced in China. The large amount of Chinese imports have created a large selection of goods in other countries as people begin to buy more and more products made in China. These goods are even widely available in other Asian nations, where Chinese-made goods are quite popular. Chinese brand names are also becoming more well-known outside China.
When Chinese Americans visit family and friends in their homeland, gifts from the U.S. are a must. But TVs and fashionable clothes aren't rare any more, and anything 'Made in China' shouldn’t be considered in any case.
"When I decide to visit my family members in China, I will have a big headache. What should I buy for them? They may not all speak English, but everyone in China knows those three words," a Chinese American said. "When they see the label 'Made in China,' they will think, 'Why do you send me this?' "
The development of China has surprised the world with its growth. As a result, the other countries are beginning to try to reduce Chinese goods with the use of taxes(稅)and import restrictions. However, the development on the Chinese economy still affects the world in many ways.
