Air is a colorless, tasteless and invisible（看不見的）gas that is around us. An “empty” drinking glass and an “empty” room, in fact, are not really empty. Each is filled with air. When the glass is filled with water, the water pushes the air out of the glass.

Stuff a piece of dry cloth（布）into the bottom of a glass so that it will not fall out when the glass is turned upside down. Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?

1. Why do airplanes take longer to fly west than east?
It can take five hours to go west-east from New York (NY) to London but seven hours to travel east-west from London to NY. The reason for the difference is an atmospheric phenomenon (大氣現象) known as the jet stream (氣流). The jet stream is a very high altitude (=" above" sea level) wind which always blows from the west to the east across the Atlantic. So the planes moving at a constant air speed go faster from the west to the east when they are moving with the wind than in the opposite.
