　　Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(自然資源)．Many of the world's great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people．

　　Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation．The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi．The lifeline of Egypt is Nile．To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles．Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in Southeast Asia．The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil(巴西)．It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it．

　　Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their banks．In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam(大壩)across a river and let a lake form behind the dam．Then people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉)their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries．However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems．As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials．People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits(利益)of this natural resource．

　　Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon (大峽谷)，the great valley in the desert country of Arizona (亞利桑那州)．But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty．The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world．

　　The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years．Slowly，the river cut down through hard rocks．At the same time，the land was rising．Today，the canyon is one and a half kilometers deep and 445 kilometers long．The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than one billion years old．The width varies (變化) from about 200 meters to 29 kilometers across．The rim or top of the canyon is about 2 300 meters above sea level on the South Rim，and about 3 000 meters on the other side，the North Rim．As a result，there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon．The South Rim is a dry desert country．The North Rim has tall forest．

　　The canyon looks different at different times of day，and in different seasons and weather．At sunrise and sunset，the red，gold，brown and orange colors of the rocks are especially clear and bright．In winter，the canyon is partly covered with snow．

　　The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best．Most visitors come to the South Rim and stay in campgrounds or hotels．Every point along the canyon's edge offers a different view．

　　The North Rim of the canyon is quieter．It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim because there is only one bridge across the Colorado River．On the way，you go through Navaho Indian land,and a colorful pink desert called“The Painted Desert”．
