The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and slightly wet,and the street lamps gave little light.

Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the pavement (人行道) . When he reached the middle of the bridge he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began walking more quickly. Then he slowed down again, feeling shame at having acted so foolishly. There was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.

Just then,he heard short, quick steps closely behind him. By the time he reached the other side of the bridge,he could almost feel someone at his heels (腳后跟) .He turned round and there stood a man dressed in a large over coat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen. Frank said something about the weather, trying to sound friendly and calm. The man did not answer him but asked rudely where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.

Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour. He knew that the person who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing,he began following the stranger quietly. The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. After about half an hour,Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop onto the ground at the other side.

Beauty meant something special to me for a time. I guess that was before I was six or seven years old. Later I was sent to an orphanage (孤兒院) and the life there turned me into an old man.

I would get up every morning at the orphanage, make my bed just like a little soldier and then I would get into one of the two straight lines for breakfast with other twenty or thirty boys who also lived in my dormitory.

One Saturday morning after breakfast,I saw the houseparent (宿舍管理員) chasing the beautiful butterflies that lived in the bushes around the orphanage.

I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful living things, one after another, and then took them from the net and then stuck straight pins (大頭4十) through their head and wings, and put them on a board.

How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty. I had walked many times into the bushes, all by myself;the butterflies could land on my head, face and hands...

When the telephone rang, the houseparent put the large board down on the ground and went inside to answer the phone. I walked up to the board and looked at the butterflies he caught just now. One of them was still moving about so I touched it carefully making one of the pins fall out. It started flying around and around trying to get away.

Soon the houseparent came back and started shouting at me. He picked up the board and started beating me on the head. There were all kinds of butterfly pieces going everywhere. I sat there by that big old tree for a long time. And I tried to get all the butterfly pieces back together, but it was too hard to do so.

Every year when the butterflies returned to the orphanage,I would always try to drive them away, because they did not know that the orphanage was a bad place to live and a very bad place to die.

An American group developed the rooftop gardening in the early 1980s. The group is known as ECHO. This idea was to help people living in cities who did not have land to grow vegetables. And now it is becoming more and more popular in many other countries.

To build a rooftop garden four things are necessary. You need a roof strong enough and four pieces of wood to build a box. Grass cuttings in which to plant your garden and a thin piece of plastic on which to put the cut grass are also necessary.

Begin by testing (檢測) your roof to make sure it is strong enough. Cut and collect some grass. Cover the roof with a thin piece of plastic. Then you build a box from the four pieces of wood. The box has no top or bottom. It should be about 8cm deep. It can be as long and as wide as needed. Put the box on the plastic. Then fill it with the cut grass. Water the grass and push it down by walking on it. After about three weeks the rooftop box is ready for planting.

Put the seeds directly into the wet grass. It is important that the grass is kept wet until the plants begin to grow. When the plants are growing, you will need to water them every day unless it rains. And birds must be prevented from eating the seeds or new plants. They will also need some liquid fertilizer^液體化肥) .You can make your own liquid fertilizer if you can get wastes from chickens. Put the chicken wastes in a cloth bag. Then put the bag in a big container (容器) of water. After about one week, the water becomes a good liquid fertilizer.

The rooftop garden is a good place to grow peas, tomatoes and onions. If the box is deep enough, potatoes and carrots also will grow.
