第二部分:閱讀理解(第一節20小題,第二節5小題;每小題2分,滿分50分)

第一節:閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項。

                                   A

People who sleep about seven hours a night live the longest, three huge studies have found, the newest out in the February issue of the journal SLEEP. Still, many sleep experts say lots of adults get too little rest, and that can lead to dangerous health problems. In the latest report from Japanese researchers, 104,010 adults were followed for about ten years. At the start, the participants answered questionnaires about their sleep patterns, and about their health, mental health and lifestyle habits, which also can affect survival. After accounting for all of these factors, adults getting an average of seven hours had the lowest death rates. Surprisingly, less sleep, even as little as four hours a night, didn’t significantly increase deaths for men and only lowered survival for women if they averaged less than four hours. But adults who slept longer than seven hours, particularly women, were more likely to die during the ten years. Doctors shouldn’t tell all of their patients to get at least eight hours of sleep, he says in an editorial in the journal.

Hormonal(荷爾蒙的) changes caused by darkness or other unknown biological effects from long sleep could be affecting survival, Kripke says. But short sleepers may suffer other bad effects. In his brief studies, those sleeping four to five and a half hours did poorly on tests that measure memory, clear thinking and the ability to pay attention, “and they did progressively worse as the week went on,” says David Dinges of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

41.  According to the study, the adult who sleeps ______ hours a night is more likely to die.

A. 5                              B. 6                             C. 7                             D. 8

42.        Why could long sleep be affecting survival according to the passage?

A. Because the darkness in long sleep causes one’s hormonal changes.

B. Because long sleep affects one’s appetite.

C. Because long sleep causes heart attack.

D. Because long sleep makes people feel lonely.

43.  Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

       A. Short sleepers suffer fewer bad effects.

       B. The more sleep, the better.

       C. It may be better for some patients to sleep less than 8 hours.

       D. Women are more likely to die than men.

44.  According to the study, 7-hour sleepers enjoy the following good effects EXCEPT ______.

       A. the longest life                                           B. clear thinking

       C. a good memory                                         D. frequent promotion

B

LONDON ― Life for Cathy Hagner and her three children is set to permanent fast-forward.

Their full school day and her job as a lawyer’s assistant are busy enough. But Hagner also has to take the two boys to soccer or hockey or basketball while dropping off her daughter at piano lessons or Girl Scout Club.

Often the exhausted family doesn’t get home until 7 p.m. There is just time for a quick supper before homework.

In today’s world, middle-class American and British parents treat their children as if they are competitors racing for some finishing line.

Parents take their children from activity to activity in order to make their future bright. It seems that raising a genius has become a more important goal than raising a happy and well-balanced child.

Teachers are dealing with exhausted kids in the classroom. It’s a very serious problem. Many children attend after-school clubs by necessity. But competitive pressures also create an explosion of activities. They include sports, language, music and math classes for children as young as four.

“There is a new parenting trend(趨勢) under way which says that you have to tap all your child’s potential at a young age; otherwise you will let him down,” says Terry Apter, a Cambridge-based child and adolescent psychiatrist(精神病學家).

“It isn’t entirely new: There have always been pushy parents. But what was previously seen as strange behaviour is now well accepted.”

45.  British parents, as the writer described in this passage, ______.

A. treat their children as sports players

B. pay no attention to their children’s lessons

C. bring up their children in a simple way

D. give their children little time to develop freely

A. activities in the country are too competitive

B. children should attend four clubs at a time

C. some clubs result in competitive pressures

D. clubs should have more subjects for school children

47.  The underlined word “tap” most probably means ______.

A. knock off                      B. draw out                 C. put in                      D. give off

48. The last paragraph tells us that in Britain ______.

A. parents used to take their children to every club

B. parents used to be wise on how to raise children

C. parents have all benefited from children’s clubs

D. parents have come to know the standard of education

Despite the cold morning wind in Montreal last weekend, Ahmad Al-Bahely was busy handing out candies. He was overjoyed at hearing that Saddam Hussein had been sentenced to death.
“That’s how we celebrate in Iraq,” said the 15-year-old high school student. Al-Bahely’s family was forced to leave Iraq in 1991 after the first Gulf War (海灣戰爭) . They fled life under Saddam Hussein for a new beginning in Canada. “We are proud that this terrible man will get what he deserves .”
An Iraqi court has sentenced Saddam, 69, to death after a 13-month trial. He was found responsible for the killings of 148 people in a village, north of Baghdad in 1982. The murders were carried out in revenge for an attempt on Saddam’s life.
Thousands of Iraqis oppressed (被壓迫的) during Saddam’s 24-year rule took to the streets to celebrate. Meanwhile, groups near Saddam’s hometown of Tikrit gathered to support the former president. “We’ll avenge you, Saddam,” the crowd shouted.
But many simply remained calm. “Whether Saddam lives or dies is not important to me.” said Imad Mohammed, a computer engineer. “I'm not even sure whether my family and I will live or die.”
Iraqis were not the only ones to have different views on the court’s decision. The international community was also divided over the sentence.
US President George W. Bush called the trial a milestone in the Iraqi people’s efforts to replace a tyrant (暴君) with the rule of law. But many European countries said Saddam should not be put to death. The Catholic Church called the sentence “eye for an eye” revenge.
Islamic leaders warned that hanging Saddam could lead to revenge by Saddam’s supporters, deepening the rift (不和) in the war-torn country. According to new research by a leading US university, over 650,000 Iraqis have been killed since the 2003 Iraq War began.
“They blame Saddam for killing people. But who will judge the leaders for the killings that happen every day now?” said 30-year-old Bahjat. He refused to give his full name out of fear.
“The sentence is just an important settlement with the past, but the big challenge for Iraq’s people is the future. Big compromises are required for lasting freedom and secured peace,” said Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.

52. From the story, we can conclude that the death sentence given to Saddam is ______.

    A. to cause controversy among people around the world

    B. good news for the world peace

    C. bad for Iraq because it will cause more fighting

D. what Iraqis have expected for a long time
53. What can we learn from what Ahmad Al-Bahely said?

A. Many people in Iraq hated Saddam.

B. He sells candies as his part time job.

C. Only students in Iraq hated Saddam.

D. Some people felt sorry for Saddam.

54. Which of the following statements about Saddam Hussein is WRONG?

    A. He is 69 years old.

    B. He killed over 650,000 Iraqis.

    C. He ruled Iraq for 24 years.

D. He will probably be hanged.

55. According to what Imad Mohammed and Bahjat said, we know that ______.

    A. they care more about their present and future lives

    B. Iraqis don’t value their lives very much

    C. some Iraqis don’t care about the future of their country

D. Iraqis are opposed to the death penalty

56 .The passage is mainly about ______.

    A. how people reacted to Saddam’s death sentence

    B. why Saddam was sentenced to death

    C. what kind of life Iraqis are living now

D. what effect the death of Saddam will have

                                     E

When a dog bites a man, it usually doesn’t make news. However, this saying changed when Beijing and several other Chinese cities announced the “Civilized Dog Raising” campaign (文明養犬活動) in November .

The government will require Beijingers to get licenses for their dogs, and will enforce the one-dog, one-family policy. Police say the “one-dog policy” is aimed at reducing the number of dog bites and lowering the risk of rabies (狂犬病). According to the Ministry of Health, rabies has become the top infectious (傳染的) disease in China. Dangerous dogs and dogs taller than 35 centimetres, such as Great Danes (丹麥種大狗), have been banned (禁止) from urban areas.

Pet owners are also required to clean up their dog’s droppings and make sure dogs are leashed (拴狗鏈), especially in public areas. Some public areas, such as banks, are closed to dogs entirely.

Dogs are regarded as man’s best friend and the history of raising dogs can be traced back to the stone age. It therefore seems sad that dogs are unwelcome in Beijing. But it is not the case that Beijingers dislike dogs. Actually, there are many dog lovers in Beijing. The city now has more than 550,000 registered (注冊的) dogs, up 20 percent from the previous year.

The problem is, actually, about living space. Different from many Westerners, most Beijingers live in urban apartment buildings, not houses in the suburbs (郊外). There is very limited open space for walking dogs. The barking, the waste, and unleashed dogs in buildings, elevators and places people gather can cause fear, fights and frustration.

Beijing is not the only city to have a dog problem. Paris, London, New York and Vienna all face similar challenges and have common rules for dogs and their owners.

57. Which of the following may be a suitable title for the story?

A. Man’s Best Friend                                B. Civilized Dog Raising

C. No Room For Dogs                  D. When A Dog Bites A Man

58. What can be inferred from the above passage?

A. If a dog bites a man, it will become an important news item.

B. Rabies is the most serious infectious disease in Beijing.

C. Soon there will be no dangerous dogs or dogs taller than 35 centimetres in Beijing.

D. Beijing has trouble accommodating so many dogs.

59. According to the passage, what should you NOT do if you are a dog owner in Beijing?

A. Walk your dog in public places.

B. Have more than one dog.

C. Raise your dog in urban apartment buildings.

D. Let your dog bark in places where people gather.

60. In the writer’s opinion, the main cause of the dog problem in Beijing is ______.

A. the limited living space in urban areas

B. its lack of rules for dogs and their owners

C. Beijingers and westerners having different lifestyles

D. the increasing number of dangerous dogs

Recently I have made an investigation on whether the first examination in Senior Three should be difficult or easy. The students have different opinions.

Some students think that a difficult exam is just like a challenge. The harder, the better. It can help students to find out where they are weak in studies and improve their learning approaches.

Others, however, are against a difficult exam. In their opinion, if it is very difficult, they may become discouraged and feel terrible about the coming College Entrance Examination. Besides, with an easy exam, they can get high marks and gain confidence.

I prefer it to be neither too difficult nor too easy, because if it is too easy, teachers will not know how we are getting on with our studies, but if it is too difficult, we will lose heart.
