Most likely, you aren’t the family breadwinner. But doing a small job or getting a weekly allowance(零花錢) would put some money in your pocket. For kids and grown-ups alike, money is easy to spend. If you aren’t careful, it can be going in no time.
Being responsible with your money is an important skill to learn — and the sooner you start the better. Whether you are tracking your spending or saving for something special, creating a budget can help you deal with your expenses and plan for the future. All you need are paper and a pencil — and some self-control.
First, take a look at our sample monthly budget. Then, use a separate sheet of paper to plan your own. In the first two columns(欄), list your sources of income and how much you expect to earn from them. In the third and fourth columns, list what you expect to spend your money on and the amount.
The left-hand total should be more than or equal to the right-hand total. If it is, you have an effective budget.
Budgets are not complex, but sticking to them can be tough. When planning your budget, be realistic about your expenses. If you know that you drop $18 at a movie, don’t write $12 in that space simply because you wish you were spending less.
If you are eyeing a big purchase, such as a $150 skateboard, spend less and save more until you have the total amount. No matter how attractive it may be, avoid spending your savings. One day, you will thank yourself!

Some say everyday miracles (奇跡) are predestined (注定的)----the right time for the appointed meeting. And it can happen anywhere.

In 2001, 11-year-old Kevin Stephan was a bat boy for his younger brother's Little League team in Lancaster, New York. It was an early evening in late July. Kevin was standing on the grass away from the plate, where another youngster was warming up for the next game. Swinging his bat back and forth, giving it all the power an elementary school kid could give. The boy brought the bat back hard and hit Kevin in the chest. His heart stopped.

When Kevin fell to the ground, the mother of one of the players rushed out of the stands to his aid. Penny Brown hadn't planned to be there that day, but at the last minute, her shift (換班) at the hospital had been changed to see her son’s performance. She was given the night off. Penny bent over the senseless boy, his face already starting to turn blue, and giving CPR, breathing into his mouth and giving chest compressions. And he revived in the end.

After his recovery, he became a volunteer junior firefighter, learning some of the emergency first-aid techniques that had saved his life. He studied hard in school and was saving money for college by working as a dishwasher in a local restaurant in his spare time.

Kevin, now 18, was working in the kitchen when he heard people screaming, customers in confusion, employees rushing toward a table. He hurried into the main room and saw a woman there, her face turning blue, her hands at her throat. She was choking.

Quickly Kevin stepped behind her, wrapped his arms around her and clasped his hands. Then, using skills he'd first learned in Scouts. The food that was trapped in the woman's throat was freed. The color began to return to her face.

"The food was stuck. I couldn't breathe," she said. She thought she was dying. "I was very frightened."

科目:高中英語 來源:2013屆度湖北省武漢市高二上學期期中考試(英語) 題型:閱讀理解

We would probably all be amazed if we watched a videotape of ourselves performing basically unconscious acts as we go about the business of the day. These unconscious acts consist of all the little personal habits that we don’t even think about, but definitely should. These are some of the things that present an image of who we are to others, and if we are careless in performing them, this image may well be other than we would like it to be.

Parents who insist that their children practice good manners and habits at home are doing them a great service, for these habits then become lifelong and the natural way they do things. It proves true that their unconscious actions will reflect a well-mannered person.

People who, for example, eat with both arms on the table at home will likely do so when out. Those who are lazy and slow in private will certainly be so in public. Children who are permitted to be disrespectful to their parents will follow suit with other adults, and will, most likely, become adults who are disrespectful of others. This is an area where the saying “practice makes perfect” may be applied.

There is an article about the actress, Audrey Hepburn, known for her beautiful carriage and posture. According to her biographer, her grandmother tied her neck to the back of her chair, at table, so that she would not drop down suddenly over her food, but rather would learn to put only small amounts of food on her spoon or fork and bring them to her mouth. This is a rather extreme “at home” method for the development of erect (直立的) posture, but it does illustrate the effectiveness of practicing good habits so that, when in public, they are instinctive.

1.Which of the following expresses the main idea of the passage?

A.Parents should be responsible for their children’s good habits.

B.The actress is well known for her beautiful posture.

C.We should always be aware of our manners.

D.Without good manners, one can never be perfect.

2. Those who eat with both arms on the table at home ______.

A.will probably change the habit when eating out with their relatives

B.will probably have the same habit when they have meals in the restaurant

C.will feel embarrassed when having meals with so many strangers in public

D.will always put their arms on the table no matter where they eat

3. The meaning of “practice makes perfect” in the third paragraph is ______.

A.the more practice one has, the better job he will do

B.the more perfect one is, the more practice he needs

C.if one has enough practice, he will become perfect

D.perfect makes a person practice more

4.Which of the following are NOT true?

A.If we are not careful about our unconscious acts, the images of ourselves presented to others will be quite undesirable.

B.The good habits formed in one’s childhood will benefit him throughout his life.

C.If parents do not care about the disrespectful attitude adopted by their children towards themselves, their children might be disrespectful to others.

D.It is unlikely that a well-mannered person will not embarrass himself in public.

Millions of youngsters across Europe could suffer permanent hearing loss after five years if they listen to MP3 players at too high a volume for more than five hours a week, EU scientists warned.

The scientists’ study, requested by the European Commission, attacked the concept of “leisure noise,” saying children and teenagers should be protected from increasingly high sound levels---with loud mobile phones also coming in for criticism(批評).

“There has been increasing concern about exposure from the new generation of personal music players which can reproduce sounds at very high volumes without loss of quality,” the Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said in a statement.

“Risk for hearing damage depends on sound level and exposure time,” it said. More and more young people were exposed to the great threat(威脅)that leisure noise posed to hearing, it said.

Commission experts said that between 50 and 100 million people listen to portable music players on a daily basis.

If they listened for only five hours a week at more than 89 decibels(分貝), they would already be beyond   EU limits for noise allowed in the workplace, they said. But if they listened for longer periods, they risked permanent hearing loss after five years.

The scientists calculated the number of people in that risk category at between five and 10 percent of listeners, meaning up to 10 million people in the European Union.

Sales of personal music players have soared in EU countries in recent years, particularly of MP3 players.

"I am worried that so many young people ... who are frequent users of personal music players and mobile phones at high acoustic levels, may be unknowingly damaging their hearing ," she said in the statement.

1.Which of the following can be the best title of the article?

A. Youngsters across Europe: suffer permanent hearing loss.

B. MP3 players: sell best but do harm to youngsters

C. The scientists’ study: requested by the EU

D. EU warns youth: turn your MP3 players down!

“Most experiences of absent-mindedness ,forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room , are caused by a simple lack of attention, ” says Schacter. “You’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded(編碼) it deeply.”

Encoding, Schacter explains, is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impression on recalling it later. Failure to encode properly can create troublesome situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention to what you did because you’re involved in a conversation, you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your cupboard.  “Your memory itself isn’t failing you, ” says Schacter, “Rather, you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.”  http://wx.jtyjy.com/

Lack of interest can also lead to absent -mindedness. “A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago, ” says Zelinski, “ may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.”Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory depends on just that.

“Visual cues( 視覺提示 )can help prevent absent--mindedness, ”says Schacter, “But be sure the cue is clear and available. ”If you want to remember to take a medicine with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table—don’t leave it in the medicine box and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.

Another common experience of absent - mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else. “Everyone does this from time to time, ”says Zelinski. “The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.”

1.The writer of the passage thinks that encoding properly is very important because ________.

  A. it enables us to recall something from our memory

  B. it slows down the process of losing our memory

  C. it helps us understand our memory system better

  D. it helps us to get back to where we were

2.One possible reason why women have a little better memories than men is that________.

  A. they rely more on the environment

  B. they have a wider range of interests

  C. they have an unusual power of focusing their attention

  D. they are more interested in what’s happening around them

3.Why can a note in the pocket hardly serve as a reminder? ________.

  A. It will easily get lost

  B. It is out of your sight

  C. It’s not clear enough for you to read

  D. It might get mixed up with other things

4.From the last paragraph we can learn that________.

  A. repetition might help improve our memory

  B. memory depends to a certain extent on the environment

  C. we’d better return to where we were if we forget things

  D. we should think about something else while doing one thing

5.The passage is mainly about ________.

  A. the memory system of persons

  B. a way of encoding and recalling

  C. the causes of absent-mindedness

  D. the impression of the environment on memory
