One topic is rarely mentioned in all the talk of improving standards in our schools: the almost complete failure of foreign-language teaching. As a French graduate who has taught for more than twenty-five years, I believe I have some idea of why the failure is so total.  21  the faults already found out in the education system as a whole — such as child-centred learning, the “discovery” method, and the low expectations by teachers of pupils — there have been several serious  22  which have a direct effect on language teaching.

The first is the removal from the curriculum (課程) of the thorough teaching of English  23 . Pupils now do not know a verb from a noun, the subject of a sentence from its object, or the difference between the past, present, or future.

Another important error is mixed-ability teaching, or teaching in ability groups so  24  that the most able groups are  25  and are bored while the least able are lost and  26  bored. Strangely enough, few head teachers seem to be in favour of mixed-ability school football teams.

Progress depends on memory, and pupils start to forget immediately they stop having 27  lessons. This is why many people who attended French lessons at school, even those who got good grades, have  28  it a few years later. Because they never need it, they do not practice it.

Most American schools have accepted what is inevitable and  29  modern languages, even Spanish, from the curriculum. Perhaps it is time for Britain to do the same, and stop  30  resources on a subject which few pupils want or need.

國外好多中小學的外語教學出現了誤區。一是不開設語法課程,學生不懂語法和句子結構;二是不同智力水平的學生混合編班上課,造成優等生被埋沒,差等生厭學。學過的語言知識由于長時間不使用而遺忘,因此現在美國大多數學校的課程計劃中都取消了外語課。

21.答案:B     考點:介詞詞組詞義辨析

    解析:由下文 “there have been several serious……”可推斷,此處表遞進關系,故選B項。in addition to除…外還…;due to由于;instead of表否定含義;in spite of雖然,盡管。

22.答案:A   考點:名詞詞義辨析

    解析:文章第三段第一句 “another important error…”已暗示,空格內應填error,其他三項與題意不符。

23.答案:C    考點:名詞詞義辨析

解析:由下文的 Pupils do not know a verb and a noun.”

 解析:由上文的 “…have accepted what is inevitable(老一套的)…”可知,大多數美國的中小學已取消了西班牙語課程。

30.答案:A  考點:動詞詞義辨析

解析:英國也效仿美國的做法(do the same),不再浪費有限的課程資源。

Certain people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you’ve known them half your life. These people have something in common. And once you know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.
How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they will help you to put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.
First of all, good talkers have asked questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question. One well-known businesswoman says, “At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters ----sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen for the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn’t. Your question should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.
Real listening at least means some things. First it means not to change the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he is really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to the tone (語調)of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then it’s time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion of parting. If you’re saying goodbye, you may give him a firm shakehand and say, “I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.” If you want to see that person again, don’t keep it a secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they’ve known you half their lives.
【小題1】You’ll like to stay with some people____.

A.who have something in common with you
B.when you get into real trouble
C.with whom you feel it easy to get along well
D.from whom you can get necessary and timely help
【小題2】After asking somebody a question, you should____.
A.make it clear what is fit to ask next
B.wait quietly for his answers
C.go on to ask more questions
D.change the subject to another one
【小題3】If you want to see that person again,____ when parting.
A.let him know what you feel
B.giving them a firm shakehand
C.asking proper questions and being a good listener
D.keeping talking to others to them in the conversation

任務型閱讀:閱讀下面的短文并從方框中的 A-F 中為每段文字選出最佳標題,在答題卡上將對應的選項涂黑。其中有一項選擇是多余的。(共5小題,每小題1分,滿分5分)

A. Take some time to speak English

B. Join an English club

C. Have a mirror on the wall

D. Keep it short and simple

E. Listen to good English speakers

F. Practice with peers or family

Here are some tips to improve your spoken English.

1.

Whatever you have learnt or read in a day, practice in front of the mirror. For a start, you can read something from newspapers, English magazines, and books. Take a passage and read it aloud. After you think your accent has improved, try reciting a poem in front of the mirror. This will increase your confidence as well.

2.

Talk to your family members and friends in English. You can also organize debates and speeches on a low level, where everyone in your family or friend circle speaks on one topic for a few minutes. It will help you get over the fear of making mistakes, as you will be with your friends and family—your comfort zone.

3.

Listen to people who you think are good English speakers. It will help you catch the skill better. You can also watch their videos, listen to them online, or even in person. It can be anyone from Barack Obama to your teacher in school. Find every opportunity to speak English.

4.

You will meet people like you there and it will help you realize that you are not the only person who isn’t good at this subject. Also meeting different people will help you overcome your complex. You can also join coaching classes, which will provide you professional help in learning spoken English.

5.

Nothing is more beautiful than simplicity. So, instead of using an ambiguous(含糊不清的) language with tough words, go for simple words. Learning any new language is difficult and English is no exception. Start simple and go with the flow. With time, you would learn bigger words too.
