Having driven almost thirty hours, I decided to stay in South Carolina for a few days. The next morning, I purchased a three-day fishing license and bait (餌料) before heading to the lake.

Opening my trunk, I carefully took out my fishing gear (用具), put it on the lake’s edge, baited up and began to fish.

“Good morning,” said someone, walking up from behind me.

Turning around, I saw a game warden (獵場管理員) with a clip-board.

“Good morning,” I said, nodding my head.

“Catch any fish?” he asked.

“No sir, just relaxing and killing time.”

“Can I see your fishing license?”

I handed him the license I had purchased at the bait shop.

“Can I see your driver’s license, too?” he requested.

“I see the name on the driver’s license is spelled Kiser and the name on the fishing license is Kaiser,” said the warden.

“The gentleman at the bait shop must have written it wrong,” I told him.

“Well, I’m afraid I’ll have to write you up for fishing with an invalid license and take away your fishing gear.”

“You’ve got to be kidding,” I responded, with a surprised look on my face.

Sure enough I was written up and my fishing gear taken away. I was told that I would have to pay a fine and that my stuff would be sold at auction(拍賣).

I stood there almost in tears as he drove away. Those rods and reels were very special to me. I had used them over twenty years, fishing with my friends, who were now all dead.

After returning home in Georgia, I telephoned South Carolina trying to explain the situation, but no

one would listen. I was told that the Department of Fish and Game had a “zero tolerance” for fishing and hunting violations. Finally, in tears I paid the fine and gave up the fight.

Nine months later, I received a letter. I had no idea who it was from as there was no return address. On a plain piece of notebook paper was written “Auction for the Department of Fish and Game held this Saturday at 11:00 am.”

On Saturday, at six in the morning I headed to South Carolina. By ten o’clock I had found the auction. There were numerous boats and piles upon piles of fishing equipment. All at once, there it was—my wonderful stuff all thrown in a pile as if it was worth nothing.

As the auction began I took my seat. In my wallet was twenty-seven dollars. For more than an hour I waited for my property to be brought to the auction block.

“We have three rods and reels here. I guess we will sell this as a unit,” said the auctioneer.

“50 dollars,” yelled someone in the crowd.

“51 dollars,” yelled another man.

I rose from my seat and walked out of the auction.

“66 dollars,” I heard as the bidding continued.

“100 dollars,” came another bid. The auction became silent.

“100 dollars once, 100 dollars twice, 100 dollars three times. Sold for 100 dollars,” went the auctioneer.

I walked to my truck, got in and just sat there. Suddenly I heard something hit the side of my truck. Turning around, I saw the back of a man putting my three rods and reels into my truck. It was the same game warden who wrote me the ticket almost a year ago!

As I got out of the truck he stuck out his hand and said, “I wasn’t wrong. It’s the law that is wrong.

I shook his hand, thanked him and drove away. I cried as I crossed the South Carolina Georgia state line.

1.Who wrote a letter to the writer telling him about the auction?

A.The Department of Fish and Game.

B.The game warden.

C.A person unmentioned in the passage.

D.The auction organizers.

2.Why did the writer walk out of the auction while it was going on?

A.He realized he was unable to get back his fishing gear.

B.He was too nervous to stay inside till the auction ended.

C.He couldn’t bear hearing people selling his fishing gear.

D.He knew the game warden was waiting for him outside.

3.What did the game warden mean by saying “It’s the law that is wrong”?

A.It didn’t make any sense to prohibit people from fishing freely in South Carolina.

B.The writer did break the law by fishing with an invalid license whatever the reason.

C.The writer should have been allowed a chance to explain and get his things back.

D.The auction should not have been held to sell the boats and fishing equipment.

It was raining as I got off the train in Nashville, Tennessee. I was tired so I went straight to my hotel.

A big, heavy man was walking up and down in the hotel lobby. Something about the way he moved made me think of a hungry dog looking for a bone. He had a big, fat, red face and a sleepy expression in his eyes. He introduced himself as Wentworth Caswell – Major Wentworth Caswell – from “a fine southern family”. Caswell pulled me into the hotel’s barroom and yelled for a waiter. We ordered drinks. While we drank, he talked continually about himself, his family, his wife and her family. He said his wife was rich. He showed me a handful of silver coins that he pulled from his coat pocket.

By this time, I had decided that I wanted no more of him. I said good night.

I was born in the south myself. But I live in New York now. I write for a large magazine. My boss had asked me to go to Nashville. The magazine had received some stories and poems from a writer in Nashville, named Azalea Adair. The editor liked her work very much. The publisher asked me to get her to sign an agreement to write only for his magazine.

I left the hotel at nine o’clock the next morning to find Miss Adair. It was still raining. As soon as I stepped outside I met Uncle Caesar. He was a big, old black man with fuzzy gray hair. Uncle Caesar was wearing the strangest coat I had ever seen. It must have been a military officer’s coat. It was very long and when it was new it had been gray. But now rain, sun and age had made it a rainbow of colors. Only one of the buttons was left. It was yellow and as big as a fifty cent coin.

Uncle Caesar stood near a horse and carriage. He opened the carriage door and said softly, “Step right in, sir. I’ll take you anywhere in the city.”

“I want to go to 861 Jasmine Street,” I said, and I started to climb into the carriage. But the old man stopped me. “Why do you want to go there, sir?”

“What business is it of yours?” I said angrily. Uncle Caesar relaxed and smiled. “Nothing, sir. But it’s a lonely part of town. Just step in and I’ll take you there right away.”

861 Jasmine Street had been a fine house once, but now it was old and dying. I got out of the carriage.

“That will be two dollars, sir,” Uncle Caesar said. I gave him two one-dollar bills. As I handed them to him, I noticed that one had been torn in half and fixed with a piece of blue paper. Also, the upper right hand corner was missing.

4. Uncle Caesar’s strange coat ________.

A. was worn by a military officer      B. was a new gray coat

How fit is a footballer?

Could you run ten kilometers in 90 minutes? A professional footballer can. Footballers have to be strong, quick, skillful and creative in their moves. Every Premier League club makes sure it has a good coaching scheme and a well-planned fitness program. They also ensure that players have the practice and training that will prepare them for matches. A good diet is a fundamental part of sport these days. Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill’s sport and health experts have chosen a secret weapon --- organic food (food grown without chemicals). What to eat after the match

Head chef at Aston Villa, lan Edge, feeds players with the best food as soon as they finish an away match. He says: “Food is very important to sports stars and particularly after a game. There is an hour of opportunity when they need to eat to get the best muscle strength, so I hand out meals on the coach on the way home. If we can make one per cent difference to the players by using organic food, then it is worth it.”

Teaching healthy eating

Everyone at Aston Villa enjoys organic food at their training ground. But the club is also worried about the unhealthy diet among local children who prefer sweets and unhealthy fast food. As part of their work in the community, Aston Villa has opened up their kitchen and invited children from local schools to come and learn how to cook with the help of the Villa head chef. Villa midfielder, Nigel ReoCoker, visited the children on the opening day. “The kitchen promotes healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.” he said.

A final word from the kitchen

Head chef Ian says: “Footballers know how important food is to their profession and nine times out of ten, they go for the healthiest option.” Do you watch your diet? If you do and you keep yourself fit, you can be a winner!
