It was the beginning of 
the school year a few years ago and I had a little boy in my class who came from a non-English speaking home. He was very quiet and shy. I wasn’t sure how much he understood during the school day and I was especially concerned that he just stood by himself at break time and did not play. If I tried to talk to him, he would turn away and tightly shut his eyes to hide from me.
After a day or two of this, I decided to seek the help of one of my outgoing and friendly little girls. I called her over and she ran to me, ready to help.
I immediately began a long speech about what I needed from her. I asked her if she would try to get him to play, and I started talking quickly about all these suggestions on how she could start communicating with him. I explained she could do this, she could do that, she could try this idea, she could try that idea. She touched my arm to stop my talking and looked up at me in that wise and special way that only a six-year-old can, and said, “Don’t worry. I speak kid.” And she ran off.
I stood there all alone, silently watching her. It took less than a minute for the two new friends to run off, hand in hand, happily joining a game of tag(捉人游戲) taking place all over the gym.
I often think of that small moment, about what I learned and how important it is for all teachers to speak kid—big kid, little kid and middle kid. I knew my focus must be on teaching students how to think, how to approach problems, and how to figure out solutions and never take the opportunity away. We must be ready to learn from our students because those “teachable moments” during the school days are for us, the teachers, as well as our kids.

Like many other high school seniors, I eagerly anticipate life after graduation. In less than three months, my belongings will be packed up and shipped to the other side of the country.
I had never imagined, in my wildest dreams, that I would attend college in Ithaca, New York. I had had my heart set on a university in California and of majoring in English.
Nearly all of my friends are staying in state, and I remember thinking to myself, when one friend said she would be going to college in Virginia: Why would someone ever choose to move away from California?
But by a twist of fate, I received a letter from Ithaca College, inviting me to apply for a program in communications. On a while, I decided to apply. What were the chances that I would be selected as a finalist? If I hadn’t applied, I would have always regretted not trying. Yet secretly, I hoped that I wouldn’t be chosen.
But, as things turned out, I was offered one of the scholarships. I also received admission letters from the other colleges I had applied to, all of which were California schools.
As I began to weigh my options, I wrote out a pro/con (利弊) list for each of my schools. I began to realize that my reasons for wanting to go to certain schools in California were based on considerations of comfort. It would be so reassuring to be close to my family and my home.
Then I began to think about the expensive tuitions (學(xué)費(fèi)) and class shortages in the California public school system. These issues were not likely to greatly improve in the next four years. Slowly, I came to the conclusion that Ithaca was the ideal choice for me – culturally, academically and financially.
Fear of the unknown should not be a reason for shying away from opportunities. It might be difficult to adapt to my new situation, but I am confident I have made the right decision.

Fourteen-year-old Abu Mohammed knows what it is like to go hungry but his extraordinary talent for soccer means he no longer has to.
His life changed two years ago when he was offered a place at the Ghanaian （加納）Football Academy run by Tom Vernon, the Africa scout （星探）for English soccer giants Manchester United. Impressed by Mohammed’s skill, the academy offered him a four-year academic scholarship. Mohammed cried when his parents failed to understand what was on and said “no”. Now when he goes home, his neighbors are surprised at how big he is : the difference is made by three meals a day.
For many poor children, football offers an escape from poverty. The first step can be getting a place at one of the handful of academies that offer education as well as soccer training. The hope of discovering stars is tempered by the realization that only a few students will make it. So far, only two graduates are currently in talks with European clubs.
“At least, it gives these boys an opportunity to build themselves a better life through talent for football.” Vernon says.
But getting the boys to take education seriously in case their dreams fall apart is difficult, he says. In Mohammed’s case, they had to ban him from the field to make him realize he had to improve his grades.
Fourteen-year-old Waris has been playing soccer in his hometown of Tamale in northern Ghana for several years before he came to the Academy. He knows how hard it will be to succeed.
“I want to be famous. I want to prove to the world that I have something important in me,” he says. “When I was in Tamale, I thought I just had to play. When I came her, I know I have to train and work hard.”
