In a recently published book, I came across some exercises with interesting names such as fishbone diagrams, lotus flowers and clustering. As I used these exercises in my classes, I noticed that students were interested. They said more and wrote more. They enjoyed expressing their ideas and sharing them in groups. They were no longer passively waiting for the bell , but actively taking part in the lesson. I find that creativity can act as a way to increase participation and improve fluency.

Creativity has become a popular word in recent years. Scholars in arts, psychology, business, education and science are all working to get a deeper understanding of it. Robert J. Stemberg is a creativity specialist and Yale professor of psychology. He defines creativity as “the ability to produce work that is both new (original) and appropriate(applicable to the situation ) ”. This definition is useful, as we want our students to use language in a new way and to use it correctly and properly. Mot scholars say there are two types of creativity: big “C” creativity and small “c” creativity. Big “C” creativity refers to genius level thinking that results in artistic masterpieces and scientific breakthroughs. Small “c” creativity refers to everyday level thinking that can be used in any situation our emphasis is on the latter. While it goes without saying that any of our students could go on to be the next Picasso or Edison, our aim is to help students produce more ideas and use language in a new way.

1. The underlined words “waiting for the bell ” in the first paragraph probably means______.

A. longing for a phone call      B. hoping to have a bell

C. expecting the end of the class   D. waiting to speak in the class

2.It can be inferred from the passage that the author thinks the exercises in the book were _____.

A. popular   B. useful   C. scientific    D. Creative

3.When you use a familiar word in a new way, you are ________.

A creative in the sense of big “C” creativity.

B. creative in the sense of small “c” creativity..

C. not creative in the sense of big “C” creativity..

D. not creative in the sense of small “c” creativity.

4.The main purpose of the passage is to _________.

A. show how useful the book is

B. explain what creativity is

C. discuss how one can be creative

D. tell what teaching aims at

試題分析:本文通過(guò)一個(gè)上課創(chuàng)新的例子,講述了創(chuàng)新的含義和創(chuàng)新的兩種類型等。

1.詞義推斷題。waiting for the bell字面意思是“等待鈴聲”。

3.判斷題。文中第二段“Small ‘c’ creativity refers to everyday level thinking that can be used in any situation.”意思是“小創(chuàng)新指的是普通水平思考的創(chuàng)新。”題目講到的是“一個(gè)常用詞的新用法”,與小創(chuàng)新講到的內(nèi)容符合,因此B正確。

4.主旨題。本文第一段先舉了一個(gè)上課創(chuàng)新的例子,第二段講述了創(chuàng)新的含義、創(chuàng)新的兩種類型等內(nèi)容,因此B正確。

In a few years, you might be able to speak Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, and English—and all at the same time. This sounds incredible, but Alex Waibel,a computer science professor at US's Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Germany's University of Karlsruhe, announced last week that it may soon be reality. He and his team have invented software and hardware that could make it far easier for people who speak different languages to understand each other.?

One application, called Lecture Translation, can easily translate a speech from one language into another. Current translation technologies typically limit speakers to certain topics or a limited vocabulary. Users also have to be trained how to use the programme.?

Another prototype(雛形機(jī)) can send translations of a speech to different listeners depending on what language they speak. “It is like having a simultaneous translator right next to you but without disturbing the person next to you,” Waibel said.?

Prefer to read? So-called Translation Glasses transcribe(轉(zhuǎn)錄) the translations on a tiny liquid-crystal(液晶) display(LCD) screen.?

Then there's the Muscle Translator. Electrodes capture the electrical signals from facial muscle movements made naturally when a person is mouthing words. The signals are then translated into speech. The electrodes could be replaced with wireless chips implanted in a person's face, according to researchers.?

During a demonstration held last Thursday in CMU's Pittsburgh campus, a Chinese student named Sang Jun had 11 tiny electrodes attached to the muscles of his cheeks, neck and throat. Then he mouthed—without speaking aloud—a few words in Mandarin(普通話) to the audience. A few seconds later, the phrase was displayed on a computer screen and spoken out by the computer in English and Spanish: “Let me introduce our new prototype.”

This particular gadget(器械),when fully developed, might allow anyone to speak in any number of languages or, as Waibel put it, “to switch your mouth to a foreign language”. “The idea behind the university's prototypes is to create ‘good enough’ bridges for cross-cultural exchanges that are becoming more common in the world,” Waibel said.?

With spontaneous(自發(fā)的) translators, foreign drivers in Germany could listen to traffic warnings on the radio, tourists in China could read all the signs and talk with local people, and leaders of different countries could have secret talks without any interpreters there.?

51. Which of the following statements is not true ?

A. A lecture translation can translate what you said into other languages easily.?

B. Muscle Translators can translate what you think into speech if you just move your mouth.?

C. There is no Muscle Translator in the world now.

D. The spontaneous translators will help us a lot.

52. What kind of equipment is NOT mentioned in this passage?

A. Lecture Translation.                B. Multiple Translator.

C. Muscle Translator.?                D. Translation Prototype.

53. What's the final destination of inventing the language translators??

A. To make cultural exchanges between different countries easier.?

B. To help students learn foreign languages more easily.?

C. To make people live in foreign countries more comfortably.?

D. To help people learn more foreign languages in the future.

54. What can be inferred from the seventh paragraph?

A. The translator is so good that it can translate any language into the very language you need.?

B. The translator is becoming more and more common in the world as a bridge.?

C. With the help of the translator, you only need to open your mouth when you want to say something without saying the exact words at all.?

D. The translator needs to be improved before being put into market.

55. Where can this passage probably be excerpted from?

A. A newspaper.                B. A magazine on science.?

C. A fairy tale.                  D. A scientific fantasy book.

I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature class. Having taught in the US for 17 years,I have no doubt about my ability to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.

I was shocked when the monitor shouted,“stand up!” The entire class rose as I entered the room and l was somewhat confused about how to get them to sit down again, but once the embarrassment(尷尬) was over, I quickly regained my calmness and admiration. I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement.

My students kept diaries. However, as I read them the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said, “Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today perhaps her next lecture will be better.” Greatly surprised.I read diary after diary, each expressing a similar theme “Didn’t I teach them anything? I described the entire Western philosophy and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in class,” I complained. “How should they say I didn’t teach them anything?”

It was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students. I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact in formation as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!

However, I also learned a lot,and the experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacher, knowing how to teach in a different culture.
