What makes a good news photograph?

As you’re thinking about taking news photographs, think about what makes up a good picture.

Most importantly, it will be of interest to a wide audience. It may describe an event in the news: a train crash, a clash in the streets, crazily happy fans the moment the big game is won.

Uniqueness is eye-catching.A picture that no one else took has much more news value than one taken alongside a rank of other photographers.A good news picture will tell a story without words. It will have context by showing the surrounding scene, or show the emotion on the faces of the people in the picture.

Timeliness is critical.Whatever the content, a news picture can lose its value in a short space of time.News events move quickly, and the shot of a mini tornado you took last week may have been destined for the front page when you took it, but of no interest to a newspaper or a website a week later.

Control is important. Please remember, absolutely no photo is worth bothering others, putting yourself or others in danger, or getting in trouble with the law.

We’re looking forward to seeing your pictures.

After too long on the Net, even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend’s Liverpudlian accent suddenly becomes too difficult to understand after his clear words on screen; a secretary’s tone seems more rejecting than I’d imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid—hours become minutes, and alternately seconds stretch into days. Weekends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.
For the last three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose, I have done much of my work as a tele-commuter. I submit(提交) articles and edit them by E-mail and communicate with colleagues on Internet mailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England; so much of our relationship is computer-mediated.
If I desired, I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything. I can order food, and manage my money, love and work. In fact, at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out only to get mail and buy newspapers and groceries. I watched most of the blizzard(暴風雪) of ’96 on TV.
But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal. I start to feel as though I’ve merged(融合) with my machines, taking data in, spitting them back out, just another node(波節) on the Net. Others on line report the same symptoms. We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It’s like attending an A. A. meeting in a bar with everyone holding a half-sipped drink. We have become the Net opponents’ worst nightmare.
What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, and clothes and face, has become an avoidance(逃避),a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human contact with cyber interaction, coming back out of the cave can be quite difficult.
At times, I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I’d never done previously. The voices of the programs relax me, but then I’m jarred by the commercials. I find myself sucked in by soap operas, or needing to keep up with the latest news and the weather. “Dateline”, “Frontline” , “Nightline,” CNN, every possible angle of every story over and over and over, even when they are of no possible use to me. Work moves from foreground to background.
【小題1】Compared to the clear words of her boyfriend on screen, his accent becomes______.

A.unrealB.unbearable
C.misleadingD.not understandable
【小題2】The passage implies that the author and her boyfriend live in______.
A.the same cityB.the same country
C.different countriesD.different cities in England
【小題3】What does the last paragraph mean?
A.Having worked on the computer for too long, she became a bit strange.
B.Sometimes TV programs give her comfort and even makes her forget her work.
C.She watches TV a lot in order to keep up with the latest news and the weather.
D.She turns on TV now and then in order to get some valuable information.
【小題4】What is the author’s attitude to the computer?
A.At first she likes it but later becomes tired of it.
B.She likes it because it is very convenient.
C.She dislikes it because TV is more attractive.
D.She likes it because it provides an imaginary world.
【小題5】The underlined phrase “coming back out of the cave” probably means______.
A.going back to the dreaming world
B.coming back home from the outside world
C.bringing back direct human contact
D.getting away from living a strange life

科目:高中英語 來源:2014屆黑龍江省高三上學期期中英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Interest in pursuing international careers has soared (increased sharply) in recent years, enhanced by chronic (lasting) personnel shortages that are causing companies to search beyond their home borders for talents.

Professionals seek career experience outside of their home countries for a variety of reasons. They may feel the need to recharge their batteries with a new challenge. They may want a position with more responsibility that encourages creativity and initiative. Or they may wish to expose their children to another culture, and the opportunity to learn a second language.

When applying for a job, one usually has to submit (present—v.) a resume or curriculum vitae (CV). The two terms generally mean the same thing: a one-or two-page document describing one's educational qualifications and professional experience. However, guidelines for preparing a resume are constantly changing. The best advice is to find out what is appropriate regarding the corporate (company) culture, the country culture, and the culture of the person making the hiring decision. The challenge will be to embrace (include) two or more cultures in one document. The following list is a good place to start.

● "Educational requirements differ from country to country. In almost every case of 'cross-border' job hunting, just stating the title of your degree will not mean adequate description. Provide the reader with details about your studies and any related experience."

●Pay attention to the resume format you use—chronological or reverse-chronological order. Chronological order means listing your 'oldest' work experience first. Reverse-chronological order means listing your current or most recent experience first. Most countries have preferences about which format is most acceptable. If you find no specific guidelines, the general preference is for the reverse-chronological format.

●If you are submitting your resume in English, find out if the recipient uses British English or American English because there are variations between the two versions. For example, university education is often referred to as 'tertiary education' in the United Kingdom, but this term is almost never used in the United States. A reader who is unfamiliar with these variations may assume that your resume contains errors.

1.Companies are hiring more foreign employees because ________.

A. they have difficulty finding qualified personnel at home

B. they find foreign employees are usually more talented

C. they need original ideas from employees hired overseas

D. they want to expand their business beyond home borders

2.The author believes that an individual who applies to work overseas ________.

A. is usually creative and full of initiative

B. aims to improve his foreign language skills

C. seeks either his own or his children's development

D is dissatisfied with his own life at home

3.When it comes to resume writing, it is best to ________.

A. learn about the company's hiring process

B. follow appropriate guidelines for job hunting

C. take cultural factors into consideration

D. know the employer's personal likes and dislikes

4.According to the author's last piece of advice, the applicants should be aware of ________.

A. the different educational systems in the US and the UK

B. the recipient's preference with regard to the format

C. the distinctive features of American and British cultures

D. the differences between the varieties of English

Hundreds of students from around the world gathered in New York City last week for the Microsoft Imagine Cup finals. They came to present their ideas for using technology to solve world problems.

Microsoft education director Suzi Levine says the nine-year-old program began mainly as a competition to create technology.

SUZI LEVINE: "When we realized that students really actually want to have a purpose for what they're creating, we introduced the idea of inspiring them with the UN Millennium Development Goals and suggesting that they use those for their muse(靈感). "This past year we also rolled out something called the Imagine Cup Solve This library(創新杯求解計劃知識庫), where IGOs, NGOs and nonprofits can submit some of the technical challenges that they would like students to consider for their solutions."

Microsoft says over 350,000 high school and college students registered for this year's competition. Judges chose more than four hundred of them to attend the finals.

SUZI LEVINE: "One from Thailand was called NewKrean, where they created a Windows Phone 7 application that allows you to broadcast your location to your social network of friends so that you can be more easily rescued." They named their application Terra.

Suzi Levine says there were also ideas from Egypt inspired by the revolution that overthrew president Hosni Mubarak in February.

SUZI LEVINE: "One was to use Bluetooth as sort of a Twitter equivalent so that if the government shuts down the Internet, you actually can still have a massive social distribution."

Students competed in nine categories. For example, in software design the top prize of twenty-five thousand dollars went to Team Hermes from Ireland. The students developed a device for cars to collect information on road conditions, driving behavior and traffic incidents.

A team from Taiwan's National Tsing Hua University won first place in the embedded(內嵌的) development category. They developed a network of wireless devices to help plot the safest escape routes during a fire.

Next year's awards ceremony will take place in Australia. Registration for Imagine Cup twenty-twelve opened Friday. Also, Microsoft announced plans for a three million dollar program to help Imagine Cup winners further develop their projects.

A. The program is sponsored by Microsoft.

B .Next year, the awards ceremony will be held in New York City.

C. Any high school or college student can attend the finals.

D. The initial purpose of the program is to solve world problems using technology.

2.What can we infer from the third paragraph?

A. The UN offers great help to the program.

B. Microsoft sets up a library for the students who want to achieve their goals.

C. IGOs, NGOs and nonprofits also provide help for the students.

D. Microsoft takes effective measures to inspire the students.

3.What does the underlined word “overthrew ” in Paragraph 6 mean ?

A. Abandoned    B. Supported        C. Drove away        D. Overturned

4.What can we know from Paragraph 7?
