Shakespeare’s or Someone Else’s?

Every once in a while you will read some article about a so-called scholar discovering material that is supposed to prove that William Shakespeare did not really write the works attributed to him. Many alternative authors have been suggested-most prominently, Christopher Marlowe and Francis Bacon. One proponent of Bacon as author of Shakespeare's plays actually looked for words like “fat and lard” and calculated how their places in the texts of the plays proved that Bacon authored them.

Any schoolboy can see the fallacy(謬誤) of such an argument and yet many adult readers of newspaper articles, written by men who have never done any research on Shakespeare, are taken in by the arguments proposed against Shakespeare's authorship. It is true that we have no manuscripts(手稿) of the plays as they came from Shakespeare's hand. After all, he wrote the plays to be acted and the actors used the author's manuscripts.  However, almost half the plays appeared in print under the author's name during his lifetime-which ended in 1616. A few years later, in 1623, two of Shakespeare's name appeared on the title page. They even got Ben Johnson, Shakespeare's great rival playwright, to write a poetic introduction for the folio volume(對開本的書卷).

There are other arguments I might present to prove Shakespeare's authorship. My own argument is simply this, if Shakespeare did not write the plays attributed to him, it was someone else by the same name.

1. The first paragraph tells us that some so-called scholars________.

   A. have proved that Shakespeare's works were his own

   B. have already proved that Shakespeare's work were not his own

   C. try very hard to prove that Shakespeare's work were useless

   D. try to prove that Shakespeare's works were not his own

2. Some people suggested that certain writers other than Shakespeare himself were the authors of his plays. One of them did so by ________.

   A. discovering words such as “fat and lard” in Bacon's plays

   B. checking up every word in Shakespeare's words

   C. comparing the use of words in Shakespeare's works with others

   D. examining the whole text of Shakespeare's works

3. According to the message, Shakespeare________.

   A. died in 1616

   B. never had any manuscripts for his plays

   C. often wrote plays together with Ben Johnson

   D. published a great folio volume with 36 plays

4. In his final conclusion, the writer________.

   A. believe that someone else had written the plays for Shakespeare

   B. states that it is logical that Shakespeare's plays were written by Shakespeare

   C. does not think that Shakespeare could have written all the plays by himself

   D. believes that some of Shakespeare's friends had published their own works under the name of Shakespeare

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項中選出最佳選項。

We had hardly got above the clouds over the airport when a calm voice said over the loudspeaker:“For technical reasons we shall be returning immediately to London Airport. Please keep your seatbelts fastened.”

I was rather surprised and glanced at the old lady next to me. She had been very chatty while we were waiting to take off.

“I'm going to New York to visit some relatives there. I always sleep wonderfully welt whenever I get into a plane.”she had told me.

And indeed, she seemed to he in a very deep sleep already.

Just then a passenger behind me shouted,“Oh, my God! The wing's on fire.”

I looked out of the window and my blood froze. Smoke and flames were pouring out of one of the engines. The plane was already turning and losing altitude fast.

“What's happening? Are we going to crash?”an American in front of me demanded.

The cabin crew were already moving up and down the aisle (走道), reassuring (安慰) people, saying things like,“It's just all right. There's no need to worry. Now, if you just sit still, everything will be all right. Don't get up. Don't get upset.”

I looked out again. The ground was rushing up at us with shocking speed. We were already so low that I could make out cars and even people.

“It's only a slight emergency,”a stewardess told me with a tense smile.

Suddenly there was a sickening bump and we were rushing along the runway at a terrifying speed. The brakes screeched (發出尖銳刺耳的聲音). The engines roared even more loudly. We came to a trembling stop. The cabin crew quickly opened the emergency exits and the passengers began sliding down huge, stocking-like chutes (滑道) to the ground. A fire engine was already putting out the fire in one engine. I had to shake the old lady violently to wake her up.

“What's wrong? Surely the journey isn't over already! I mean, have we got to New York?”she asked sleepily.

1.When did the emergency occur?

[ ]

A.We are not told.

B.Just before the plane landed in New York.

C.Shortly after the plane took off.

D.Sometime in the middle of the flight.

[ ]

A.Height above sea-level.

B.Place or area high above sea-level.

C.Way of thinking or behaving.

4.When they landed, the old lady _____.

As I was not experienced in cooking , I thought if a dozen was good , two dozens would be better , so I doubled(加倍)everything . As Doug loved oranges , I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl . Soon there was a sticky dough (面團) covered with ugly yellowish marks . 第三部分閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9.There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.
“J.C.,” he replied.
She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.
Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.
A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.
The stage was set for Owens’ victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African American winners.
“It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn’t go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.”
Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone calls from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.
Owens Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles and dogs.
“Sure, it bothered me,” he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”
In time, however, his gold medals changed his life. “They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.”
56.   Owens got his other name “Jesse” when _____.
A. he went to Ohio State University     B. his teacher made fun of him
C. his teacher took “J. C.” for “Jesse”   D. he won gold medals in the Big Ten meet
57.   In the Big Ten meet, Owens _____.
A. hurt himself in the back    B. succeeded in setting many records
C. tried every sports event but failed    D. had to give up some events
58.   We can infer from the text that Owens was treated unfairly in the US at that time because _____.
A. he was not of the right race      B. he was the son of a poor farmer
C. he didn’t shake hands with Hitler
D. he didn’t talk to the US president on the phone
59.   When Owens says “They have kept me alive over the years”, he means that the medals_____.
A. have been changed for money to help him live on
B. have made him famous in the US
C. have encouraged him to overcome difficulties in life
D. have kept him busy with all kinds of jobs
60.   What would be the best title for the text?
A. Jesse Owens, a Great American Athlete
B. Making a Living as a Sportsman
C. Golden Moment — a Life Time Struggle
D. How to Be a Successful Athlete

第三部分 閱讀理解(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

請閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項 (A、B、C和D) 中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項的標號涂黑。

May 16th               Wednesday                                                  Sunny

They used to call her “the witch(女巫)”, but today I found things were different.

My legs were too short to reach the floor from up there on the big chair. I was so afraid. My legs started to shake.

It was the first time I had been to the principal’s(校長的) office. And I knew what she was going to ask me.

Why had I been running on the concrete(混凝土) in the playground? Why hadn’t I followed the school rules?

The principal’s secretary was sitting at her desk. She kept asking me questions like whether I liked school and what grade I was in. I didn’t want to talk to her, so I just gave one-word answers.

Then she asked what my dad did. But I didn’t really know what he did, so I made something up. “He plays basketball for the Boston Celtics,” I said.

The secretary just looked at me, and said nothing more.

Just then, the door to the principal’s office opened. There she was, the woman that everyone called “the witch”.

Was she really that bad? I was surprised to see her office walls were bright yellow, and there were some nice pictures on the desk.

She told me about the pictures. I was surprised that she had a family and a kid, just like me.

Then she asked how my family was. It turned out that she had known me since I was only a few weeks old. I was happy to hear that. If she knew my mum, then I wouldn’t get into much trouble.

She cleaned the cut on my knee and told me to be more careful. She also told me about the rules of the playground. But she didn’t punish or shout at me. And I forgot all the bad things I had heard about “the witch”. I had met her and I knew she was nice.

1.“The witch” in the story refers to _______.

A. the writer                            B. the writer’s father                C. the secretary    D. the principal

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
